Pakistan v Sri Lanka | 1st Test - Day 2 | Karachi | 22/2/09

Salman Butt really needs to hit it big now in tests aswell - InshahAllah

*an average of 29 is nothing for an opener to have
*And his FC average is over 41
*His conversion rate to a 100 is quite bad
*just 2 100's in 19 tests
He's now got to regard himself as a senior player in some ways with Inzi and Yousuf not around. Agree Omar, its time he stepped it up now and started scoring big in tests.

not this senior thing, still not convinced by eithr the current openers

Yeah Saj, he needs to step up to the challenge and take responsibilty as a senior in the team as he's got 19 tests and 63 ODI's under his belt and especially with them 2 big names you mentioned not there anymore he needs to up his game from now! Can't afford to go back into a shell and sulk!

Hope he can do well - InshahAllah thats all we can hope for!

Mendis needs to be attacked as he could get more confident if they dont look to score off his bowling....And thats something which we wont want to happen! But not any stupid risks or such!

Yeah thats right. The one Butt hit off him first ball deserved to be hit, there playing him well I think.

Manzoor is being made to look like a little girl,
He is doing a lot of last second adjustments against Mendis.

Spinners on from both ends now ... should only be 5 more overs left in the day.

If Pakistan don't play at a similar or even above SL's run rate this is going for an obvious draw.

They should really pick up the run rate tommorow. Today its important to not lose any wickets at the close of play.

You missed one important condition.

The opposition have scored over 600 runs. Pakistan at best can hope for a draw in this match. If I were Pakistan I would aim to bat for the rest of the test match :)

If I were Pak captain I'd make the required 445 runs or so and avoid the follow on then declare, with SL having a lead of 200. By that time it'd be Day 4 or even around the end of Day 3. Then SL would make some quick 200 runs in around half a day (they did it in the first innings so could do it again) and give Pak around 400 or 450 to chase in a day or a quarter/half.

2 maidens ... well and truely trying to close shop ... not a great tactic. Lets hope they don't throw it away.

This is test cricket Natalia, not PPL.

I am glad you are not the Pakistan captain.

Yeah - if SL set around 4 records in their innings atleast Pakistan can set one big record - largest amount of runs scored in a test innings :P

that'll require a few double centuries and triple centuries though. :))

Who cares about he run rate at the end of the last session. Don’t lose a wicket before the end of the day and then come out tomorrow and pile on the runs.

OUT!

BUTT GONE AT A CRUCIAL TIME OF THE DAY!!
AARRGGHH!! TAKEN IN THE SLIPS! :out

The openers did their job, seeing off the first 20 overs. Now YK comes out with the weight of the world on his shoulders.

Very true, he'd gone right into his shell and spinners love nothing more than a plyer not looking to score runs off them.

Disagree. The openers needed to see off todays play and at least till lunch tomorrow. 20 or so runs from Butt when chasing 600 plus is not good enough.

This game is all about 'piddi' now. 'Baari' for those who don't understand piddi. Forget runs, forget run-rate, just make sure you make the opposition stand in the sun as much as they made you do it.

The only thing they should be careful of is not going too much into their shells because that can only mean more pressure than is necessary.

One of the fans in the crowd had a sign which read:

"I am the best, but Abdul Qadir hates me"

I thought it was funny, so did Waqar.

Nice to see Yunus come out rather than send a night watchman--and he is still smiling!

Nightwatchman would have been a disaster with Mendis and Murali there. So good for YK to come in.

Really really positive move not to send a nightwatchman out. Nice to see :)

Yup Butts job would have been to at least get to the end of days play. SL will sleep a lot nicer tonight knowing they have got a wicket.

Runs are still important, other wise SL will be in control for the whole game, especially if they get to enforce the follow on.

You are right they could have done a better job in these conditions, but at the same time i was worried about losing 2,3 wickets today and at least they have given us a platform.

End of Day 2! Pak 44-1 Earlier Sri Lanka Declared with a mammoth Total of 600+!

Its been another Great day for Sri Lanka and that wicket at the end was icing on the cake for Them!

Pakistan tomorrow need to Bat extremely well and not lose more than 2 wickets!

They have a long day ahead of them Tomorrow!

Butt went from 11 off 24 balls -> 23 from 70 balls.
Thats 12 balls off 46 balls. Well and truely went into his shell as soon as the spinners came on.

Khurram Manzoors defenses are pretty good, specially against spin. he seems more of a test match player. Looked below ordinary in the ODI series

Manzoors selection was heavily questioned - but its was Salman Butt who looked like the debutant. Early chance behind not give, dropped off Mendis first ball and then cracking - getting out just before the end.

blast my retarded cable service...the Ten Sports signal was horribly messed up, couldn't see a thing :(:( but looks like Butt sahab failed as well :(

Butt sahab is the only one who has failed as yet. Amongst the batsmen that is.

:) true...someone needs to play a real class innings to save Pakistan's behind in this game could it be :malik ? :D

I expect the people who're most expected to make big scores (Younis, Misbah) fail and the least expected to make big scores (Malik, Akmal, Iqbal) to make good scores.

Should be an enthralling day tomorrow.

There is a very real probability that :malik decides to take out all his anger (accumulated because of his public sacking, lack of support from 'senior' players, all that bad journalism, and countless romances that turned bad) on the Lankans by score a punishing 275.

Mendis and Murali are going to have a field day on this wicket. It has already started to spin and Murali especially is not going to give us any free pies like Dany did and Mendis is pretty accurate as well. Expect some suffocation from the batters. Plus Jaywardene is not going to make the same mistake as YK, he will suffocate us for runs.

Sorry but an innings defeat looks highly probable to me. I hope i am wrong though. But main thing is that there needs to be an investigation as to who ordered the groundsman to prepare a flat track especially after YK asked him to produce a green top. If Inti, Aqib or Abdul Qadir influenced the groundsman to do so then they should all be fired asap without any questions asked.

and if I remember correctly, he has done that before against the Lankans as well...his 1st Test ton in 2006 I believe it was

Yes, and what an important innings that was. Sadly, he was never able to repeat that.

Is tomorrow his day? An 'angry' innings is the need of the hour.

we need to play positive. Once again Pakistan the only country in the wolrd to prepare pitches for the opposition.

I think the curaotr is havingan Inzi hangover, my habit he made a grass free wicket

umm, thats how you play spin. especially against a devious little fellow like Mendis

Umm! the plan should be that these late adjustments should find the gaps not his pads or a resting spot in some obscure place of this grassless pitch.

Those of you that watched the match - was there any reverse swing for the bowlers?
