The top two teams in the ICC World Test Championship standings do battle in Karachi and both Pakistan and Australia will re-shuffle their sides.

Overview

Pakistan vs Australia, second Test
National Stadium, Karachi, Pakistan
12-16 March, 10:00 local

A Pakistan v Australia Tour Pass, to watch every ball of the three Tests, three ODIs and a T20I, is now available on ICC.tv for only $4.99 USD.

After a dull draw in the opening Test of the series in Rawalpindi both sides will make changes to their team for their meeting in Karachi.

Just 14 wickets fell across five days play in that historic series opener and all parties will be hoping for a better prepared pitch for the second Test, after the corresponding pitch in Rawalpindi received a 'below average' rating from the ICC.

With a pitch more conducive to five-day cricket likely for the second Test, both teams will inject some fresh faces into their line-up in an attempt to gain a positive result.

Pakistan may look to re-shuffle their pace attack with Hasan Ali, Haris Rauf and all-rounder Faheem Ashraf all in contention to feature, while Australia are expected to include a second spinner should conditions suit.

Uncapped leg-spinner Mitchell Swepson may win the nod to partner the experienced Nathan Lyon, while left-armer Ashton Agar could also be given a chance to impress.

History suggests Pakistan will be hard to beat in this contest, with the hosts having won 23 and lost just two of the 43 Tests they have played at the National Stadium.

Conversely Australia have a poor record at the venue and are yet to claim a Test match victory from eight attempts at the ground.

Australia currently sits on top of the ICC World Test Championship standings with a 77.77 win percentage, while Pakistan is second on a 66.66 win percentage.

Remember the last time

It was at this ground some 24 years ago that star Pakistan all-rounder Shahid Afridi made his Test debut and the then 18-year-old made an instant impression by claiming his maiden five-wicket haul during Australia's first innings.

The match went on to be drawn, with Mark Waugh's classy 117 in the second innings offset by an unbeaten 120 from Ijaz Ahmed on the fifth and final day as both sides shook hands early.

Interestingly, a dry Karachi pitch meant both teams selected three spinners for the Test.

Afridi partnered tall off-spinner Arshad Khan and left-armer Shakeel Ahmed, while Australia used the versatile Colin Miller alongside New South Wales duo Stuart MacGill and Gavin Robertson.

What they said

PCB chairman Ramiz Raja: "I hope that this series, going forward, will become more interesting, but only one match is done, so don't jump the gun, there's a lot of cricket to be played."

Australia captain Pat Cummins: “Our intel for Karachi and Lahore (is that two spinners) is probably the way to go. We’ll have a look at the wicket first. (Playing two spinners) may have been helpful here but I don’t think it would have made too much difference."

Pakistan squad: Babar Azam (c), Mohammad Rizwan, Abdullah Shafique, Azhar Ali, Fawad Alam, Haris Rauf, Iftikhar Ahmed, Imam-ul-Haq, Mohammad Wasim, Naseem Shah, Nauman Ali, Sajid Khan, Saud Shakeel, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Shan Masood, Zahid Mahmood, Hassan Ali, Faheem Ashraf

Australia squad: Pat Cummins (c), Ashton Agar, Scott Boland, Alex Carey, Cameron Green, Marcus Harris, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Nathan Lyon, Mitchell Marsh, Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, Mark Steketee, Mitchell Swepson, David Warner. On standby: Sean Abbott, Brendan Doggett, Nic Maddinson, Matthew Renshaw

Hoping for a memorable contest . Pakistan should be home to not just any Cricket but exciting Cricket.

Ramiz's frank admission of cowardice when it came to preparing the Rawalpindi was shocking. The cowardice runs from top to bottom, you can't pin it on any single individual. They're all like that. Are four points worth that much?

Whilst am not an expert on pak cricket, my 5c worth - did you guys make a mistake by not picking Yassir shah? surely on home turf this guy could run thru aus who are not traditionally the greatestplayers of leg spin. With so much focus on the wicket, i guess it could well be a spinning track.
With both teams out to win - it will make for exciting cricket - cant wait!

Good toss to win for Australia. They need to score big and put pressure back on Pakistan. Let's see how Warner fares here with pitch having some help.

Pakistan cricket has got no character watch them wilt if aus put up a good first innings score

Faheem and Hassan Ali in for Ifti and Naseem.

Fair call that.

first prediction Warner to smack black and blue big long day ahead

My prediction

Aus all out 1st innings 320
Pak all out 1st innings 415

Aus 2nd innings all out 270
Pak 2nd innings. 176/5

Pak to womin by 5 wickets.

Karachiites letting their city down once again? Looks like an empty stadium. On a holiday, that's just embarrassing

Just a question,
Is cricket not popular in karachi ?

Definitely not as popular anymore as it is in other parts of Pakistan. In my opinion, Karachiites in general have been less passionate about sports compared to other cities. Can't really identify the reason though

Bad Economic conditions and the hassle to go through heavy security protcols is the reason karachites dont want to watch cricket in ground

Are economic conditions any better in Lahore? Are security protocols less stringent in Lahore/Pindi?

Anyhow, karachi crowd is always found to be very moody and dont really show up when it matters the most

Very surprised at how they’ve dropped Naseem Shah! He had bowled decently in the previous match and this will not be good for his confidence.

Agreed. But I'm not sure how it translates to poorer economic conditions and tighter security protocols, if that's what you are implying?

I have watched 3-4 matches in Lahore. They have managed excellent arrangements for spectators coming in/out stadiums, parking etc. But still i had to leave my home 4 hours before match start and it needs 2 hours after you exit from stadium to reach your home. Its a lot of wastage of time because of security protocols, parking issues etc

Watching matches in pakistani stadiums is not same like other countries. So expect a low key crowd in test matches specially and dont compare them with MCG, SCB, or eden gardens lol

Lack of investment and commitment by PCB to cricket in Karachi. Karachi being the economic engine and largest population base in Pakistan should be the heart beat of cricket of Pakistan but the old Lahore and Karachi mentality has deprived Karachi.

NSK is in such a poor state that I would not like to go even if someone paid me. Seating, food, toilets, other entertainments, parking, transport links. Nothing really exists.

So before you blame the people of Karachi blame the people running PCB who have neglected Karachi.

We have a crowd thread for this crowd discussion - lets keep this one for the match itself.

What investment has Gaddafi seen lately? None that I can recall. Feel like every answer to Karachi's woes is the neglect by the PCB.

Hassan looking a completely different bowler from around the stumps. Need a wicket here boys!!!

Terrible start for Pak. Khawaja is so strong off his legs Hassan is just feeding him pies

Such a weird spell by Hassan. He's bowled 2 wonderful overs and 2 overs of absolute filth

Aussies are batting at 4.5 rpo. Is this another Patta wicket, I Hope so otherwise will be difficult for Pakistan when they come to bat .

Too much predictable full stuff from the Pakistani bowlers, need to mix in bouncers to put the batters on the back foot.

Differences are night and day. QSL is clean, better managed and welcoming. NSK is dirty, rundown and frankly an eyesore. When ever I have driven past NSK I feel embarrassed that this stadium represents Pakistan cricket where as QSL is nicely presented, in a nice location and generally makes me feel good about cricket in Pakistan.

I love Lahore and Karachi in equal measure but the quality of facilities between the two cities is obvious.

Rana sahab is on attack. Lets c how it goes
I expect complete phanta by warner and khawaja

Commentators saying Naseem shah should have played over Hassan Ali and I agree. He bowled a lot better thus far than what Hassan ali has bowled. Unlike ppers they are saying he bowled well in first test

Waqar says Naseem should have played ahead of Hasan Ali..

Reason being hassan was injured in the PSL, not played enough cricket..

With less experience , Naseem would get carted again here...
