Cheteshwar Pujara stood firm with a century and Mayank Agarwal continued to impress on a day when the Indian batting wore down the Australian pace attack in Sydney.

Pujara brought up his third hundred of the tour, to go with two other fifties, finishing unbeaten on a patient 130 off 250 balls. It guided India to a healthy 303/4 at stumps on the opening day of the final Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Thursday, 3 January.

Giving him company was Hanuma Vihari, batting on 39; the fifth-wicket stand is already worth 75.

Pujara came in to bat early in the day – in the second over, in fact – after India chose to bat. The returning KL Rahul had found no change in fortune and was back in the hut with another single-digit score, edging an easy catch to first slip off the bowling of Josh Hazlewood.

Initially, the No.3 was content as ever to defend sturdily. It provided the perfect foil for Agarwal, who took the attack to the Australian bowlers even as the batsmen were peppered with a combination of short balls and lively seaming deliveries.

The youngster, playing only his second Test, didn't look quite at ease against the ones that rose, especially against Mitchell Starc, but backed his technique to keep his eyes on the ball and drive down the ground.

He took on Nathan Lyon, stepping out to smash the off-spinner for a couple of sixes down the ground. However, he paid the price for trying to hit one too many when he was caught by Starc at long-on for his highest Test score of 77.

Virat Kohli was, surprisingly, more circumspect than Pujara. Yet, the second session brought India 108 runs, taking them to 177/2 at tea.

Hazlewood struck right after the break for the big wicket of Kohli as the Indian captain gloved one down the leg side. Ajinkya Rahane was then undone by a ripping short ball from Starc – he tried to sway away but the ball caught his glove on the way to the wicket-keeper.

Pujara, meanwhile, carried on as only he can. His hundred – the 18th of his career – came up with a flick off Starc to mid-wicket. It had taken him 199 balls, and took him past 1000 deliveries for the series.

But for a review he survived off the bowling of Pat Cummins and another delivery from the same bowler before lunch that struck him on the back of his helmet, he remained in full control. Getting together with Vihari, he scored at a fairly brisk rate.

As for Vihari, he looked in fine touch, back at his familiar position in the middle order. While he had showed great patience when asked to open in Melbourne, here he didn't hesitate to play his shots. There were five boundaries in his 58-ball 39.

While Starc got the batsmen to duck and weave, he was also the most expensive, going for 75 runs in his 18 overs.

Not a good stat/fact for this series. Aust’s quicks have bowled 2592 balls & only 205 balls would have gone on to hit the stumps. India have 8 LBW’s (Bumrah has 6), Aust 1 (Lyon has the 1), yep that means not one LBW for Aust’s quicks. SA was 300 for very few wickets then got bowled out around 350, then Aus batted big.

Can it happen again? Bowling Indians out is possible. Batting big looks harder, but India is without their first choice pacer and it won't spin much on day 2. Plenty to play for in the first session.

Vihari might score 70 odd, Pant his susal 30 odd...and Chepu might add 30 more to his score. Thats 400 by tea session. Than Aus has to score 400 fast and bowl out India cheaply. Then Australia can win. But the chances of Trump cancelling his Mexico wall plan seem more likely.

Or Pujara and Vihari go cheaply in morning then the last 4 wickets don't add many runs. That's 350 runs. Now Aus batting big will be a more difficult part, but being behind 350 is far better than 400 runs.

Ok what if it rains heavily for next 7 days.

Ok what of there is Tsunami in Sydney.

What if Shan Massod takes a hat trick and SA collapse on 160 giving Pakistan 17 runs lead. Then Fakar scored a double hundred of 60 balls and Pakistan declare on 777 and SA lose by 577 runs.

Lot of questions to be answered just wait for few hours.

I want the gutless aussies to put up one last fight before their batting leaders eventually integrate back into the side. Am i asking too much?

Big day for Indian cricket - bat for another 60+ overs and the test series is almost theirs. Would take something extraordinary for this Aussie team to win the match if India posts 475+.

They wont win it if India declares now. This Aus team is so bad, I actually think Pakistan could have beat them this year in Aus!

If 400 reached by India
Then only two results possible . Drawn test or India takes it 3 to 1

Aussie commies are trying to be coaches instead of commenting on the game.

sensing a collapse here...australia can still win this game if they take remaining 6 wkts in the next 20 runs

Commentating has been horrible this series. First Harsha Bhogle talks about Kabbadi Kabbadi, Indian foods like Chicken Tikka, to listening to extremely bias Aus commentators. Oh yeah and trying to get a female commentator for diversity isn't really helping the cause either.

100 partnership between these two. Desired Indan collapse seems a mirage

Vihari was not out. The third umpire seemed to have jumped the gun by just looking for the spike, but the side canera view showed that the ball was not near the bat when the spike was detected

When there is no noise, no contact we see spike. WHen there is no spike, no contact we hear noise. wind noise is confusing. Vihari was very very unlucky to be given out. Glad they got it right for Pant.

160 plus overs at the MCG then another 40 odd overs in the second dig. Now another 107 overs. Do they have it in the tank to come backa nd bowl again?

Vihari was out by both on field and third umpire and there was clear spike. The reason why the ball and spike seemed a bit out of sync is because they need to increase the frame rate.

Yea.. every single dismissal is in sync. Only one is out of sync lol What are you talking man. Whole concept of DRS is based on sync not out of sync

All those hoping that Australian fortune will change for better after the return of the famed sandpaper cheats also hoped that Pakistan will come back stronger after Abbas or (2 years back) Amir join the team. However Abbas (in place of Hassan) has the made both pakistan’s bowling and batting weaker (didn’t know it was possible). Similarly, the return of Amir has not been as good.

Same will happen when a suitablly chastened Smith and Pattinson rejoin. A cheat never remains effective when he is forced to become an honest guy! All records of those sandpaper cheats should be expunged!

what do you think now ? 389/5 at lunch. New ball dealt with only one wkt lost Pujara still at the crease and Aussie bowlers dead tired.

Pant batting sensibly. Pujara doing pujara. Carry on till tea and we can let pant loose. :)

Bat as long as you can until you get all out. No need to declare. Even if this game is draw, we would win the series. I know its a little negative approach but I am desperate to win the first series (by any Asian team) downunder hook or by crook. So bat bat bat and score atleast 500 to take India defeat out of question from this game.

Bat till one hour before close should be about right.

India have already batted AUS out of this game. It is very difficult to lose once you score 400.

IT could be anything. some pad noise could be anything. There was a yawning gap when there was a spike. Pretty much everyone agrees that was a dodgy decision including Aussies.

I do not believe there was huge gap between spike and ball passing. If edge is showing spike for virtually anything then I am afraid such technology should not be used.

My theory is that spike and the frame is slightly out of sync like they need to incrase the frame rate in some circumstances.

At any rate, the decision was reviewed and turned down so it wasnt dodgy at all.

I think it's pretty close to safe. 425+ and Aus is not going to do much. If I were India, I will simply bat whole day if not bowled out. Pitch is pretty good to bat right now. It will increase the chance of a win here and Aus will have no chance at all. India can simply put fielders all around and keep attacking.

It's even more difficult with 500 runs. So India should keep batting without worrying about time here. Aus bowlers are tired and it's very hot out there. Keeping all fielders out for another 40 overs will help.

Pant is not patient enough to bat 2+ sessions. And India's tail will get wrapped up quickly though Kuldeep is a bit of a blocker.

Even the Aussie commentators were left incredulous but look at our BD poster, so much trust in umpiring. They have come a long way from Rohit Sharma WC meltdowns :)

Even Lyon indicated it went off the elbow.

The requirement is to form an opinion looking at the given video and not to correct the sync. It is to be trusted that spike and picture are in sync. Otherwise everything can be corrected to be in sync with spike.

400-5. This series is done n dusted. Pujara has won it for India n now is on course for a well deserved 200

India should not even think about declaring. They should bat as long as they can and keep the Aussies in the field. It’s up to The Aussies to force result.

I am very impressed with Pant, in the first test he was nonchalant and was just swinging away. Today he is playing a mature innings. He is a quick learner.

Paine has given up here.

Bowling Lyon and Labuschagne in tandem now, 3 easy singles every over.

Usman like the rest of his team was sleeping. Pujara has pretty much driven everyone to take a nap here, well done.

Aussies are playing like they wanna go back home oh wait..they want India to go back home.

Commentators are so frustrated.

Pujaras innings is similar to the one Shastri played at the same ground 26 years ago.

Uzzie Bhai is a fan of brother Pujara. Who wouldn't be? Im sure he considers it a blessing to watch this batting clinic from such close quarters :)

Hazlewood is almost trundling now, only thing is bounce.

If you call 138 km/hr trundling then what would you call Philander huffing and puffing to 123km/hr and screaming at 127km/hr?

It was a tough chance, the ball came quick to him, pretty sure even rahane would have dropped that one.

Said that when he was bowling 131..plus Philander is more on swing not pace

All those fans who are expecting Indian innings to collapse. Your wishes will get fulfilled when you watch the batting of your team.:rabada2

Safe to say that India has won this series. And it will be 3-1. Kuldeep and Jadeja will run through this Australian batting.

Pujara has really stood up in this series for India in the absence of Kohli.

Guess risabhpant now gets license to hit out or get out

There is no need to hit out though. Australia need to force a win not us. We should simply bat till we get bowled out.

Lyon gets his man ... Pujara caught and bowled Lyon for 193.. Deserved a 200
