Australia's pace trio of Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood took nine wickets between them to shoot Pakistan out for 240 on the opening day of the first Test in Brisbane.

VIEW MATCH CENTRE

Pakistan enjoyed a solid start to the day as the openers saw off the first session unscathed with 57 runs on the board and they took the score to 75/0 a few overs into the second session of play. In defying Australia's formidable attack for that long, Azhar Ali and Shan Masood registered the highest opening stand for the first innings of a Test match, for any overseas combination at the venue, surpassing Bruce Edger and John Wright's 64-run association from almost four decades ago.

However, things were to go downhill soon. It was Pat Cummins, Australia's spearhead and the No.1 bowler in MRF Tyres ICC Test Rankings for bowling, who gave the hosts a much-needed opening, ending Shaan Masood's 97-ball stay for 27, with a sharp outswinger that took the leading edge en route to Steve Smith at second slip.

Skipper Azhar Ali was dismissed the next over, nicking one to Burns at first slip off Josh Hazlewood, on 39. Mitchell Starc then replaced Cummins in the attack and struck with the third ball of his spell to have Harris Sohail caught behind for 1, while Hazlewood continued his merry ways against Babar Azam, who played a reckless shot off a wide half-volley, falling to the pacer for the fifth time in seven innings. Lyon removed Iftikhar Ahmed for 7 as the visitors slipped to 95/5.

Unfazed by the drama at the other end, Asad Shafiq continued his glorious run and marched his way to 24th Test fifty. He found able support in Mohammad Rizwan (37) and Yasir Shah (26), with the former striking seven fours during his 34-ball stay. Starc was back to his ruthless best in the closing minutes of day's play, striking off successive deliveries with the second new ball, to leave the debutant Naseem Shah to face the hat-trick ball, which he survived.

Cummins then breached Shafiq's defense with an absolute peach, that seamed in to hit the top of middle to end his stay on 76. It didn't take long for the hosts to wrap up things, with Starc taking the final wicket that saw Pakistan's innings end in the 87th over.

Apparently Pak batsmen yesterday made a record for highest first wicket score at Gabba for a visiting team and not getting out in first session.

Not sure if there is a thread on this but thats a good record..

I don't know why I have this feeling that things are gonna happen today.

We need to take the top four out by 100 runs

We have to take the field carrying a belief we can do the above.

Be sharp in the field and take our catches.

I don't know why but I'm getting this feeling that we will bowl them out for about 250ish and it's over to the batters thereafter.

^ I think it's the naseem novelty factor and the Abbas Imran twisted logic thing. ( Misbah due to get something "right" soon)

I just feel we let a golden opportunity slip. With the kind of start we had, a long score was on the cards. Still fuming over Haaris and Babar's dismissal!

Need to smoke out Warner and Smith in the first 10 overs if we are to compete in this game.

Expect Australia to be 350-400 /3 down by close. Mediocre bowling attack. Our cricket team is embarrassing.

Letting golden opportunities slip is our forte. Since 1996 we have done it thousands of times.

Waiting to see how the young pacers are going to bowl. I hope they don't get too excited and become a spray gun. If they stay patient, maintain good line outside and close to the off, they will get wickets. Their success depends heavily on the catchers. In the past, Pakistan's catching became comical sometimes. Let us hope they catch well today.

A lot of expectations on young Naseem shah hoping the best for him, and I hope if in the event he doesn't have a good outing that he still backed and gets more chances moving forward

Too much of expectation from 19 year old Naseem shah...hopes should be on Afridi who has more experience

Hows the pitch ?

Any seam or swing ?

Not much swing other than first 4-5 overs but definitely some movement off the pitch on occasions if bowlers can keep it up there. To get the edge you dont need a lot off movement rather just enough as we saw with Azhar Ali's dismissal.

Bounce from the good length and the fuller length was pretty impressive yesterday if that remains today and Pak bowlers can bowl fuller than it can get interesting.

Sigh, watch everyone rip into the bowlers when Australia puts on 350 today. Ignoring the fact that its a good batting wicket and the batsmen completely stuffed it up yesterday after a good start.

If Pakistan are to come back in the game, they have to get Smith out early. If Smith scores a century, Pakistan will probably lose.

The objective will be to first get Smith onto the crease in the first place let alone think about getting him out

Well then it was really dumb to leave Abbas out as he bowls the perfect line and length on a pitch that has a little bit of seam movment

Haven't been this excited for a test match day in ages, rooting for Naseem and co.

Big stare from Warner to Shaheen Afridi. Afridi should sledge him a bit wouldn’t hurt

What speed is he bowling at? Logos blocking my view. (Shaheen)

Rizwan standing too far back.

Dropped (missed) catch off Imran.. great chance created.

Shan Masood being tested by Imran Khan sr as well. :wahab2

Our bowlers are going to be smashed to every corner of the ground.

Pitch is a highway.

Too short and wide at the speed of 130km. Misbah should have started with Naseem

He is mainly a seam bowler who gets the movement after the ball pitching

Don't see seam movement either, except last ball of his first over.

Shaheen is not pitching it up, neither is IK.

Misbaha mates are ifti and imran obv he just needed a nudge..so thats whats he got

Running has been really good by aussies till now

Oh bhai tu itni tension kyon le rah hai. Aussies got their wickets when they found out the length they supposed to bowl after the first session. It will take little time for our bowlers too, i heard warne saying that this pitch will get quicker as the match goes on.

Might sound negative already but with a paltry score we need third man straight away ..cant afford runs there

Thank you for comparing Cummins, Hazelwood and Starc with Shaheen and Imran Khan.

Their bowlers were moving the ball from ball1.

Shaheen finding his length. Imran needs to follow up

IK is bowling from very wide of the crease.
How did he make back into the side?

So annoyed with Misbah’s selection right now. Abbas wouldn’t do this

Rizwan has already missed one chance.

We can't afford it in Tests @ Aus.

Beauty by IK.

Almost 2nd chance, created by him again.

Now stop bowling half trackers.

Hope IK has good fitness, he could be bowling 30+ overs in this innings.

He has a nice smooth run up and action, while giving it his all. Best of luck to him.
