After a convincing innings win at Headingley, England will be raring to go against India at The Oval in the fourth Test, starting Thursday, 2 September.

Overview

England vs India, fourth Test
The Oval, London
September 2-6, 11 AM local

After a collapse in the final innings at Lord's in the second Test, England made a spirited comeback in Leeds to restore parity in the five-match series. While Joe Root, the new No.1-ranked Men's Test Batter in the world, has been the lynchpin of their batting line-up, the hosts will be pleased with the performances of the new top three comprising Rory Burns, Haseeb Hameed and Dawid Malan.

The return of Chris Woakes into the squad will give the already-packed pace bowling line-up a huge boost ahead of the fourth Test. Having last played a Test match in August 2020, Woakes is expected to be drafted straight into the playing XI in place of Sam Curran, who has had a below-par series by the standards he set the last time India toured England.

India, meanwhile, have a lot to ponder about in terms of team selection. The form of Ajinkya Rahane and injury to Ravindra Jadeja will be the two biggest causes of concern going into the fourth Test. With Hanuma Vihari waiting in the wings, and Ravichandran Ashwin capable with the bat, it remains to be seen if India ring in the changes.

India called up Praisdh Krishna, the Karnataka paceman, into their squad ahead of the fourth Test, and the management will now have another option in their efforts to manage the workloads of the pacers.

With the series in the balance at 1-1, both teams will be desperate for victory, the result pushing the winning side to the top of the ICC World Test Championship table.

Remember the last time

England made an incredible comeback at Headingley as they beat India by an innings and 76 runs to level the series 1-1.

Virat Kohli's decision to bat first after winning the toss didn't go as planned as the batting lineup collapsed for just 78 runs in the first innings, their eighth-lowest total in Test cricket.

England made full use of the conditions easing up for batting as each of the top four registered a 50+ score. Joe Root was once again the star batter for England, scoring his third century of the series.

The Indian bowlers found their rhythm late on day two and wrapped up England's innings for 432 early on day three, but the hosts had already amassed a massive lead of 354 runs by then.

Rohit Sharma, Cheteshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli showed great resistance as India finished day three on 215/2 but crumbled in the first session of day four as they lost the remaining wickets for just 63 runs. Ollie Robinson, who has adjudged the Player of the Match, produced a delightful display of pace bowling as he registered the second five-for of his career.

What they said

Joe Root (England captain): "A world-class team like India, led by Virat (Kohli) I expect nothing less than a response and we'd be naive to think otherwise. That's why I think it's really important that we don't get too comfortable, we don't think that we've achieved anything at this point, we've just got ourselves back to level playing."

Virat Kohli (India captain): "We like to be in this situation where people start coming at us with doubts and start questioning our ability. That is the situation we love best. We will not be demoralised by the loss. The guys in the changing room are hurt. When you are hurt, you really want to correct the things that did not go our way. That is the way we will play the next two Tests."

I'm a bit shocked that he's not picked Ashwin at the Oval, could prove a tactical error when the ball starts turning after day 3.

Jadeja is not too bad an alternative though to his credit, he prefers his ability with the Bat perhaps. Reverse Swing will play a big factor to at this ground

Not sure that I agree with the team selection from India, and arguably this is the right call at the toss from England to pick their strongest bowling lineup and field first. England hold the cards today and it's up to India and Kohli to prove the critics wrong.

Oh Boy ! the body language of Virat after losing the toss. India can still make it count if they manage to
see of 30-35 overs without losing too much, Since England is going to bat last India has to make least 250
it will surely help if they dont repeat there leed's batting exploits

Unless they have India 4 down after the morning session it’s a pretty senseless decision, India could perform a lot more reislliently and you just don’t bat first at the Oval; always look down, not up!

Woakes/Overton/Robinson/Anderson - ideal attack for English pitches and the Dukes ball. 36 all out is in real danger today .

Daft not to pick Ashwin with England batting last.

Winning the toss and bowling at the Oval - also daft. England better get them out for < 200.

He wont survive a series loss here

We have suffered under this joker.

At this point, i am willing to take a series loss to get rid of him.
He'll, just wait and watch. Who'll dare to touch him? Ganguly? Don't make me laugh.

After fixing era of 90s the current captain has managed to make me hate Indian cricket once again.

I was 50-50 here.

One part of me wanted him to drop Ashwin so he can get exposed.

I genuinely didn't think he'd overlook Ashwin here, but he's so rigidly enamoured with the idea of playing four fast bowlers that he can't change his mind.

He'll get exposed if the fast bowlers fail to restrict England, I have a slight suspicion that the green tinged pitch is an illusion.

Woakes will pick maximum number of wickets in this innings with his seam movement

I expected it.

Williamson's 4 pacer ownage has consumed him.

Plus weak batting meant Jaddu plays ahead.

There could be a personal rift too.

-----

Meanwhile I am hearing Ashwin took 80 wickets at 20 a piece in the last 3 years lol.

I asked my friend who knows Ashwin personally as to what's going on...

He told me his Dad asked him to just retire.

I don't know why people are questioning the decision to play 4 fast bowlers, this is england not india and you need to take tough decisions to win away.
But batsmen were ones struggling in last game and one of them should have been dropped.

Ashwin has been rightly benched he doesnt have the quality to do well against this Eng lineup/ conditions. Thakur / Ashwin both are dead duck batsmen but atleast thakur is a freak, and this is the only place where he can get lucky. Umesh will bat better. Lets see not a bad team.

Inexplicably ashwin isnt playing and Rahane is. Oval is definitely going to spin on day 4 and 5

I can't remember the last time India's best test batsmen were the openers, doubt it has ever happened in Indian cricket history.

Not swinging much. Maybe too cold.

Bowling first BAD.

Shane Warne is currently explaining in considerable detail why these are good bowling conditions. It is England who are not getting enough balls in the right areas (yet).

Where have Chris Woakes long hair and headband gone to? :(

Absolute rozza from Woakes to nip out Rohit.

They haven't faced woakes in a long time, so it's expected that india will struggle with against him

As i said earlier woakes is real threat here. He can get 4-5 wickets easily

Totally unplayable.

Amazing delivery!

India stuck on 28-1 and making Woakes look like Glenn McGrath.

Gotta get Pujara out early as he can dig in here.

It's so fun to watch Chris woakes in england when he is not playing against Pakistan.

He is too good in these conditions. He was thoroughly missed in first 3 tests.
