What's new

England v Pakistan | 1st Test | Lord's | Jul 14-18, 2016 | Day 1

One innings on a super rank turner in 2004....one innings in 2008 where we panicked....is ok.

Moeen however will go down as a black mark in the history of our spin playing ability. I bet even some no name domestic players of 90s would play him far better than what we did in 2014.

I just hope it doesn't mark the point where India descends into spin playing mediocrity. Hope our current slump (against spin) is just a bad phase.

Blame the Indian think tank for taking tactical advice from cricketanalyst.

What's the boxy shape on the back of the england players under their shirts?

It's a GPS device, so the coaching staff can monitor how much distance players have covered. Football and rugby players use them as well, some of them can track things like heart rate as well so they can stay on top of player fitness and workload.

Come in various forms, like this sports bra looking device modelled by Zlatan

Tbh, it was a flat patta, but I've noticed that Indians are better on bouncier tracks than Pakistanis. Not so much swing, but given how we're going about it here, one might need to re-assess that statement.

Both are good players and will go down as greats for Pakistan but there just not as good as kohli root Williamson

Not sure where the confusion lies. Him being our best Test batsman doesn't make him a flawless batsman, since our standards are very low.

He is a good B grade player, not in the league of Kohli, Rahane, Root, Smith and Williamson etc. so far.

Sure, but you keep going back and forth. First you said that he can't play pace, and most of his runs are against spinners. Then you commented on how solid his technique is and how he looks the best out of the lot. Then more compliments, followed by criticism of his run scoring ability. Train of thought goes out the window with such contrasting statements (even if you're being specific).

Anyone watch the Pak A side in England bat? Are they also horrendous against pace or is there some hope?

Azhar & MoHa (& YK as well) must slap each other tight (slapping own cheek doesn't hurt much). This is seriously limited ENG attack & Cook can't call Moeen for his "tight" darts. Had they not threw is, specially MoHa, PAK would have been in dominant position now.

Never said they were comparable. But let's not put too much emphasis on innings played in Australia on flat tracks. It will be interesting to see Kohli 2.0 in England again to gauge better.

Shafiq doesn't look too comfortable.

The Problem with our batsmen is a concentration issue. They need spin regularly to free themselves. Too cautious against pace and difficult to concentrate non stop which they don't have to in UAE

Massive hour ahead, 250-4 is a good day and 250-5 is par, anything else is very bad.

Agreed. At least avoid losing any more wickets given our long tail. Batting should become easier now the ball is older.

I'm not going back and forth. Not my problem you can't comprehend what I'm saying.

He is technically sounder than Younis and Misbah, but he too can't score many runs against pace because he is not a very good timer of the ball.

He doesn't dance around the crease like Younis and and not every second delivery hits the pads like Misbah.

Where he lacks though is the ability to put deliveries away, which is the difference between him and other world class batsmen.

Having a solid technique and looking good aesthetically does not mean that he is a dynamic batsman.

He is technically better than Hafeez but Hafeez is more dynamic and better capable of batting at a higher tempo.

Hope this clears the confusion, can't help further unfortunately.

Hope Misbah doesn't eat too much cake in the tea break as he will get some pies soon thanks to England's Over-rate :moali

I think Kohli will do better in England next time

Is being negative in fashion these days ??? Can we for once back our own team instead on contemplating on how are players are a notch below xyz players of other teams.

I have literally seen better fans from associate level nations.

This is indeed pathetically sad.

Tea time, a somewhat of a decent sessions similar to the first one but we need to finish off on a high.

England session again, we need to get through last session of the day without losing any wickets to get back in this game now.

+1 Our test team is very good. We must back it up

Now Cooki is in a bit of tight corner - his pacers have bowled MashAllah 52 overs in 4 hours & Moeen has given 14 in 2 overs ................................. someone please tweet some slang to MoHa .............. could have got a 150 today.

It has more to do with ability to survive till he gets to Moeen than the actual intent :))

Having said that his intent was perfect today

No need to get defensive.

You don't need to be a dynamic player in test cricket to be considered good or great even. You can be a workhorse, play your part and still garner respect as a proper batsman.

As far as his timing goes, that drive down the pitch answers that. He's got a solid defense, and no major flaws in his technique that I can see (except maybe some work on backfoot) so I personally think he's doing alright. Being dynamic can lead to soft dismissals like some of Hafeez's dismissals in both ODIs & tests. Shafiq's tempo was also ok in the warmups (despite weaker opp.), but he seems to do better than the Tuk-tuk styles of Azhar and Misbah, so I think he's ok on that front too.

Anyway, my statement was supposed to be a light hearted comment, but it seems you overreacted. Back to the game.

it's imperative pak get a decent score on the board so they can let amir ease himself into the game and help with his nerves.

Even stevens at the moment, I'd say.

If we end up with 250/5 at stumps, it will be advantage Pakistan.

I back our boys to get there.

Legendary Mhd Amir and Asif won the same number of tests against England in England as Ishant Sharma and Bhuvi.

We drew a series against South Africa, infact almost won it in South Africa in 2011 when they had their best ATG team with Zak and ..........Ishant and Sreeshanth.

I'm talking about the present... not yesteday series. Your team of the 2000s was the best team you had, golden era as they say for you guys but even then that bowling attack was competitive not world class...

Younis Khan will be kicking himself that he missed out on Moeen

Btw how did Azhar look? Missed his innings and I saw he didn't score but how did h '"look"

How am I a hater? Just said he has been struggling of late, which is true if you look at his record he has an overall average of 28, and this year he has struggled to find rhythm.

I was being sarcastic... I thought the "—" would give that away.

Actually that's the game of Test cricket - anyone can swing the bat & when you are one of 11 representing your country, you are expected to connect some better than MMHS. After 20 years of cricket & holding on to that opening spot by everything that he has, I do expect him to know the bowling limitation ENG mentioned here. Shaan was out for his technical limitations - MoHa threw it.

Why are we happy with 300 on the flattest wicket of England i dont understand

Have you seen that on Sky ?

The ball tracker shows the pace of the pitch at Lord's is barely faster than Abu Dhabi !

My prediction Misbah will get 177,Shafiq 108,Sarfaraz 50* batting with the tail....Pak 530 All out

England 1st innings 348 Allout -M.Amir 3 Y.Shah-2,R.Ali-3,Riaz-1,1 Run out

Pak 2nd Innings -128/6 Decl

England 2nd innings -148 Allout-Y.Shah-7/39

So after so much preparation and acclimatizing we are 158/4 in a flattest track with a lot of luck and without Jimmy. Really Disappointed

1.it's not THAT flat
2. this is their first innings in the actual series

i'd be a bit more forgiving of this score

He looked more solid than Younis and Misbah but there was zero intent to score, which cost him his wicket in the end.

It's an honour to watch Asad driving on the rise, & it's a shame for PAK that Azhar bats at 3 & Asad at 6.

I this a jinx ?

:))) :))

Correct - Cook thought he'd only make his pacers bowl all day.

But this is where PAK can lose wickets too, when going after the spinners. They'll take chances.

Was cowardice from Cook to not take chances and put on his spinner(s).

Let's see where we are after stumps.

I thought Azhar's innings was most disappointing, ate up 43 balls without moving the scoreboard.

Lol........Haven't you been following cricket for like 50 years......Doesn't take a lot to impress you does it :)))

Everyone hating on Misbah before the series, and he is the first Pakistani to score a fifty
