India will be missing key Test players Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, and Ravindra Jadeja as they aim to level the five-match series on a pitch anticipated to offer sharp turn right from the beginning.

In response to injuries to Rahul and Kohli, uncapped batsmen Rajat Patidar and Sarfaraz Khan have been brought in, while spinner Washington Sundar joins the squad in place of Jadeja.

England's uncapped spinner Shoaib Bashir, delayed by visa issues, finally joined his teammates, and coach Brendon McCullum hinted at the possibility of him starting if England opts for a four-pronged spin attack.

Although left-arm spinner Tom Hartley impressed with nine wickets on debut in Hyderabad.

England's Ollie Pope showcased effective strategies for handling conditions in Hyderabad, contributing a remarkable 196 in the second innings.

India has remained unbeaten in a home Test series since England's last victory in 2012. On England's previous tour three years ago, India recovered from losing the first Test to claim the four-match series 3-1.

Who do you think will win the second Test?

England spinner Jack Leach is a significant doubt for the second Test against India because of a knee injury sustained in the first Test.

Leach hurt his left knee fielding in Hyderabad, but was still able to bowl 10 overs in the second innings as England sealed a remarkable 28-run win.

He did not bowl in training on Wednesday as England prepare for the second Test in Visakhapatnam on Friday.

Leach's absence could lead to a debut for Somerset team-mate Shoaib Bashir.

Uncapped off-spinner Bashir, 20, joined the England squad during the first Test after returning to the UK in order to sort out his visa, which had been delayed.

Leach, who missed the entire Ashes series against Australia last summer with a back injury, was playing in his first Test since June.

After two separate incidents in the field in Hyderabad, the 32-year-old suffered recurring swelling of his knee and was restricted to bowling short spells in India's first innings.

With heavy strapping on his leg, he was able to bat and bowl on the fourth day, taking the crucial wicket of Shreyas Iyer as India suffered just a fourth home defeat in 47 Tests.

At training on Wednesday, Leach was wearing compression tights, with his left leg still noticeably swollen.

"He's a tough cookie," England opener Zak Crawley told BBC Sport. "You can never write him off. He had a sore knee in the last game and we'll see how he pulls up. At the moment he's still in contention to play.

"Obviously it would be a shame for Leachy to miss out, he's a fantastic bowler, but we've got good depth. We've got a good spin attack and good seamers to back them up."

Bashir was a surprise call-up to the England squad for this series. The right-armer only made his first-class debut last summer and has taken 10 wickets in six matches.

But like left-arm spinner Tom Hartley, another left-field selection who took 7-62 in the second innings in Hyderabad, England believe the tall Bashir has the attributes to succeed in India.

If Bashir does play, he would look to continue a trend of Test debutants thriving since captain Ben Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum took charge of the England team.

Seamer Matthew Potts took seven wickets in the match on his debut against New Zealand at Lord's in 2022, while later that series Jamie Overton made 97 batting at number eight at Headingley.

Both Will Jacks and Rehan Ahmed claimed five-wicket hauls against Pakistan last winter, making Hartley the third spinner to claim five wickets in an innings on debut under Stokes and McCullum.

And Kent opener Crawley believes Bashir is "absolutely" ready to play in Visakhapatnam if required.

"He's a great kid," said Crawley. "He's got a lot about him. He knows what he is trying to do with his bowling and he backs himself. I like that and feel like if he got his chance in this series he would go well."

If Leach is replaced by Bashir, that could leave an England team with three frontline spinners in Hartley, Ahmed and Bashir with only three caps between them.

Another option would be two pick two seamers, leaving a choice between Ahmed and Bashir.

Two days out from the second Test, the pitch in Visakhapatnam does not look as bare as the surface in Hyderabad, but is still expected to turn.

"It looks like a wicket which will turn," said India batting coach Vikram Rathour. "Maybe not from the first day, but it should turn."

India will certainly make changes to their side after losing all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja and batter KL Rahul to injuries.

Batter Virat Kohli was already ruled out of the first two Tests for personal reasons, while pace bowler Mohammed Shami and wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant are also injured.

"They've got so much depth," said Crawley. "Whatever side they are pick is going to be a very good team, especially in these conditions. We're going to have to be at our best again. Hopefully we can do that."

The much-changed India side could give England an excellent opportunity to take a 2-0 lead in the five-Test series.

India have not lost a home series since 2012 and have not lost the first two Tests at home since 2000, when South Africa won a two-Test series 2-0.

"It's a massive opportunity, but we see every game as an opportunity for this team to not just win, and move up in the series, but entertain the crowd," said Crawley. "Hopefully we can put on a good show this week."

The likes of Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer deserve patience amid their current poor run, said India batting coach Vikram Rathour on Wednesday, urging his wards to tackle England's aggression with intelligence in the second Test here. The Indians lost the opening Test in Hyderabad by 28 runs despite having a 190-run first innings lead. England managed to shock the home favourites with their 'Bazball' approach with Ollie Pope scoring a match-winning 196. The second Test starts on Friday.

"There are young batters in our team who have not played much Test cricket. So, we need to be a bit patient with them. Batters like (Shubman) Gill, (Yashasvi) Jaiswal and (Shreyas) Iyer will eventually start getting big runs, I'm sure of it," Rathour said at a press conference here.

Although Jaiswal played a knock of 80 in the first innings of his fifth Test, Gill and Iyer failed to fire, continuing their struggles in the format. While Gill has played 21 Tests, Iyer has appeared in 13 five-day games.

Gill hasn't scored a 50 in his last nine Test innings. Iyer has been similarly off-colour.

Rathour said he expects better application from the side's batters in second Test where the home team will once again miss the services of the redoubtable Virat Kohli.

"There's a difference between playing with intent and playing attacking cricket. I want them to play with intent. If there is the opportunity to score some runs, they should take it," Rathour said.

"They need to decide by looking at the surface and conditions. So, the batters need to possess that intelligence as to which is the best or safest shot on the surface," he explained.

Rathour felt India's batting performance in the second innings of the Hyderabad Test probably lacked discipline.

"Could they have batted with more discipline? Maybe they could have. That's what they need to decide and come up with their plans," he observed.

"But, they need to score runs by playing their shots, as you need to back your strengths. Batting is always about scoring runs. It's not about not getting out but how many runs you put on the board," he said.

England used the sweep shot quite well to blunt the effectiveness of Indian spinners but Rathour said it's not a stroke that can be added overnight to a player's repertoire.

"You need to be prepared for that by practising it. If you add more shots to your game, it's always beneficial. We played traditionally. The strength of strong areas is going straight when it comes to using our feet.

"We can keep doing that, and of course, if we can add more shots and score through the square of the wicket, that's always an addition," he said.

Rathour also heaped praise on the English batters for playing brave cricket, especially Pope, effectively taking the game away from Rohit Sharma's men.

However, he maintained that England's strong showing has not put his team under any additional pressure.

"They (England) were brave. They took their chances, which worked for them. The kind of innings Pope played was exceptional. I haven't seen too many playing such a knock against our bowling attack," he said.

"I don't think (there's any pressure). We are expected to win while playing in India, and the boys are used to that by now.

"The message to them from the support staff is to play good cricket and not bother about results too much. The other teams also come well-prepared. Since we have won Test matches in Australia, England and South Africa, we also expect them to win a Test in India."

Wonder what the pitch for this game will be like ? Weather seems fine with highs of 32 to 34 C with real feel like 35-37 .
If it is a very dry surface would like to see these changes in playing 11 - Sarfaraz for KL , Sundar for Jadeja , Jurel for Bharat & Kuldeep for Siraj .
Already hearing talk of Bashir & Anderson replacing Leach & Wood .

India slipped to fifth place on the World Test Championship (WTC) table following the loss in Hyderabad and the hosts would be desperate to bounce back here.

Rathour said that more than recovery, the players need to learn and move on.

"There's no question of recovery. You keep learning every game that you play. Of course, we could have done better in batting, bowling and fielding. A lot of discussions and ideas are being shared, preparing well and hoping to do well in the next game." He expressed confidence in the players' ability to bounce back and cited India's unbeaten record in Test series at home since 2012.

"We keep talking about our batters (not scoring enough), but India has been winning a lot of series at home. We haven't lost a series at home for 12-13 years.

"It means we are putting up more runs than the other teams. These are tough conditions to score runs, but I'm sure that the batters will find a way."

'Don't think players require too much coaching'

At this level, Rathour said the players just need to act as per the situation.

Listen to the latest songs, only on JioSaavn.com

"Once you come to this level, I don't think you require too much coaching. It's about reading the situations and making smarter decisions.

"As long as they are asking the right questions and receiving the right answers, there is no chance of over-coaching," he concluded.

India need to take chance and prepare a rank turner.

Only chatter at the moment from a few people who have seen the pitch, but is reportedly unlikely to be a rank minefield.

Surely India won't prepare a flat track, would they ? They have to level the series, and if they prepare a rank Turner with notable players missing, then England could come into play.

So what will it be ?

Actually, India's plan backfired on them, which they always go for that make a hell like a pitch and win the game. Now they must be hesitant while opting for a turning pitch because they know England can get benefit even more from such a track.

Yeah, rank-turners would go against them.

Even an average spinner ends up looking like Murali/Warne out there.

Their best bet is to play a similar pitch to the 1st Test and have Kuldeep in the side. If they win the toss, this will give them the advantage they need.

Jadeja and Rahul out with Kohli still away.
Big opportunity to go 2-0 up for England and really make a statement.

Honestly this indian team need batting friendly pitch, if they prepare rank turner England always get extra more runs than India

After losing the first game, India would want a batting paradise. Rank Turner has not worked for them. Maybe make a pitch that has a bit of seem and grass to make it more interesting.

Sarfaraz and patidar will dropped after 2nd test match for sure

Without Kohli this Indian batting line up is super brittle. Great opportunity for England to take this series to 2-0.

Where is the vote? I would like to vote for England :jimmy

I'm sure this is going to be a minefield. Game over in three days.

The result would have been a bit different had India won the toss and batted. Rank turners is the only option, they always go for it especially when the opening Test is lost.

This has to be the most inexperienced spin trio ever.

You have to be pretty bad to loose to this bowling attack. But India did it in the first test so hopefully they can do it again.

Apparently will be similar to the pitch for the first Test but slightly better for batting. Win the toss and bat basically. But knowing England they will fully back themselves to bowl India out for a gettable score even if they lose the toss.

see the picture - looks like will be a belter for 8-9 sessions .

England should win the 2nd Test too. India will miss Jadeja badly. Not just his bowling. But his batting where he scores 50 odd runs pretty much every time he comes in. Jadeja is a better batsman than Iyer and Gill. That shows how valuable he is to this Indian Test team.

Rohit
Jaiswal
Gill (LOL)
Patidar
Iyer (LOL)
Sundar
Axar
Jurel (Enough of Bharat)
Ashwin
Kuldeep (He is a must if it is a turner)
Bumrah

India does not need 2 pacers on these pitches. Indian team looks a feeble. But they have to take it as a challenge. I am not averse is playing Sarfraz Khan in place of Bumrah. But Bumrah cannot be dropped as he is a match winner even if the pitch offers no assistance to pacers.

Knowing Indian system, I expect Siraj to play again and Kuldeep will sit out. Indian team selection has always been this way. Like Usual, Siraj will offer nothing on these turners.

India should play this XI:

Rohit Sharma
Yashasvi Jaiswal
Rajat Patidar
Shubhman Gill
Shreyas Iyer
Dhruv Jurel
Axar Patel
Ravi Ashwin
Kuldeep Yadav
Jasprit Bumrah
Mookesh Koomar

Wow...what a strong team.

England's fluke in the 1st game won't be repeated again and easy win coming for Bharat 🇮🇳

Mookesh? :ROFLMAO: :rp

England will be happy to see him in the side. India should play Sarfaraz Khan in his place. That will improve the brittle batting.

Injury list keeps piling up, now Leach will miss out
He was looking like the most accurate of the English spinners overall so he will be a big miss
Inexperienced trio of Hartley-Rehan-Bashir will have to hold the fort, Hartley has shown his quality but if he goes back to the 1st innings Hartley they could be in for a lot of leather chasing

And how bad do you have to be white washed and humiliated at home by them?
Don't worry, losing test series at home is a pakistani thing. 😁

see the picture - looks like will be a belter for 8-9 sessions .

First innings runs absolutely crucial. Could be a high scoring game and then lots of wickets falling in the final 4-5 sessions.

Only chatter at the moment from a few people who have seen the pitch, but is reportedly unlikely to be a rank minefield.
India need to take that chance , there is no alternate , it can backfire , but that will give Indian bowling a good chance

Actually, India's plan backfired on them, which they always go for that make a hell like a pitch and win the game. Now they must be hesitant while opting for a turning pitch because they know England can get benefit even more from such a track.
Hesitant maybe , but that is best possible option. On Flat pitch England will have bigger advantage.

England have advantage and momentum on their side but if India wins the toss and bat first, they are capable of putting a big total on Day 1.

All it takes is a Rohit Sharma special supported by couple of other guys. Let's not underestimate the Indian team in Indian conditions.

Former England captain Michael Atherton wrote in his column for The Times:

"England have moved from heavy second favourites to a situation where it would be a disappointment now if they did not win the series. Such an outcome, so unexpected and so unbelievable given where both teams were on first innings, must have a huge psychological impact, especially given the quick turnaround and the injuries to two of India’s key players, Ravindra Jadeja and KL Rahul. England have an excellent chance of building on their lead."

"India are not only 1-0 down, but are faced with rare uncertainty over the shape and balance of their team. Suddenly, it looks full of potential weaknesses. He [Jadeja] has a fine record as an all-rounder,the differential in batting and bowling averages places him in the highest rank, and that balances the team beautifully."

"After England went 1-0 up last time in Chennai in 2021, India’s response was to produce ever more spiteful surfaces, although this England team will not be so fearful should a similar response come this time."

Atherton is right. If England cannot win this series, it should be a huge disappointment. Indian side will only get stronger for 3rd Test with the return of Kohli, Jadeja and KL Rahul again.

The last time India faced England at Vizag - they secured a massive win by 246 runs, with Kohli and Pujara scoring centuries and Ashwin taking a 5 wicket haul.

What's so poor is that India scheduled this series in the smaller cities and grounds where a few test matches have ever been played.

There's no matches in Mumbai, Eden Gardens, Ahmedabad etc; where crowds would be packing up the stadium for 5 days.

Even Vishakapatnam has only hosted 2 tests till date and the last being 5 years ago.

Apparently India's batsmen have been sweeping and reverse sweeping the life out of the ball in the nets.

Remarkable to see an opposition team force India to change their techniques against spin at home.

I don't think their batting cost them as much as their bowling in Hyderabad. They let England off the hook in the 2nd inns while their fielding was awful.

England must be wary. India will come back hard and it's not every day you'll win from trailing by 190.

Its a shame that BCCI cannot provide uniforms to those poor women. Richest board, but acts like Zimbabwe Cricket board.
Bro, that's just the local dress sari that a lot of Indian women wear. They are not going to wear a pant and shirt. Sari is the most common Indian dress and worn everywhere by women - office going women, high powered CEO's, housewives, bankers, teachers, laborers etc etc - you get the drift now I guess.. Women have equal rights as men in Ind and they can wear whatever they want with no restrictions unlike some other countries ..

Lot of folks underestimating Ind here. At home Ind is a very formidable team irrespective of the 1st test result. Also an underappreciated fact is the weather. It was pleasant in Hyderabad . In Vizag its going to be hotter touching 87F-92F.. That is hot. The Eng players will be cooked in that heat. Saw that in the ODI WC where they bowled first and got cooked in the heat. Still would like to see a very even engrossing contest or else it makes for a boring viewing no matter who dominates completely.

Gill again lol 🤣

Stupid selection. Mukesh picked over Sundar in India lol?

India won the toss and chose to bat first.

Teams:

India
(Playing XI): Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rohit Sharma(c), Shubman Gill, Rajat Patidar, Shreyas Iyer, Srikar Bharat(w), Ravichandran Ashwin, Axar Patel, Jasprit Bumrah, Mukesh Kumar, Kuldeep Yadav

England (Playing XI): Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Jonny Bairstow, Ben Stokes(c), Ben Foakes(w), Rehan Ahmed, Tom Hartley, Shoaib Bashir, James Anderson

So Rahul and Jadeja have been replaced by Patidar and Kuldeep. Sarfraz would be kicking himself that he should have been there.

Stupid selection. Mukesh picked over Sundar in India lol?
This management is proving to be beyond inept and incompetent.Eng are going with lone pacer, aus and eng won with lone pacer and they will not learn. They don't accept that they have to change and keep on saying same answer for any question

Mookesh Kumar
If India wanted 2 pacers, they could have played Siraj who is 100 times better than Mookesh.

Washington sundar should have played a n Siraj’s place. He is an excellent spinner and a very good batsman too.

Shame on Rohit and Dravid.

I understand. But they don’t look professional. You don’t see men wearing lungis pulled up to their knees Rajnikant Style in the picture. They represent BCCI and they should be wearing proper outfits that befit the organization.

India have key injuries and their selection for this one looks odd to me, the team could be a bit unbalanced, but they’ve won an important toss and they are batting first on a road, which will be a leveller. Interesting Test match ahead.

Washington sundar must’ve been picked in place of Mukesh who will trundle at 125k on this spin pitch.

Indian coach and captain are dumb as usual. Not innovative and adaptive as England.

Indian batting failed in the 1st Test 2nd innings. So what does our dimwit captain and coach do? Reduce one batsman and lengthen the tail :salute

Sarfaraz not picked and gill still there what a shame. And mukesh picked lol dravid love these type players

India lost 1st test due to overconfident .now they back to reality so England is not going to win any test from here.
Most likely 3-1 or 4-1 to India.

India doing the right thing.

500+ is what they are looking for.

India have won an important toss , if they get to 400 , England will be under pressure.
