India, led by Rohit Sharma, is set to face off against England in the third match of the five-game Test series. The match will take place at the Saurashtra Cricket Association (SCA) Stadium in Rajkot, starting on Thursday, February 15.

In the series opener, India faced a 28-run defeat to England, led by Ben Stokes, on a challenging pitch at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad. However, the Indian team made a comeback by leveling the series in Visakhapatnam the following week.

This will be the second time India and England compete in a Test match at the Rajkot venue. Their previous encounter in 2016 resulted in a draw. The most recent Test match at this venue saw India triumph over the West Indies by an innings and 272 runs in 2018.

If team India bats sensibly instead of reacting to Stokes random field sets every ball they can score big here. There is another thing of how rookies respond in their debut series.

England vice-captain Ollie Pope says there is "every chance" the tourists will field an extra seamer in the third Test against India in Rajkot.

England have picked only one specialist fast bowler for each of the first two Tests, with the series level at 1-1.

On Tuesday, two days before the third Test begins on Thursday, the Rajkot pitch had a covering of green grass.

"If it stays like that, there's every chance two seamers will be played," batter Pope told BBC Sport.

"I don't want to give away too many secrets, but at the minute there's a little bit more grass on it. It looks a pretty good pitch.

"We always like to make a decision here the day before the Test begins because conditions can change, especially with the heat on it all day."

If England do opt for the extra seamer, then Mark Wood could join James Anderson in the XI. Wood had his left leg strapped on Tuesday but was still able to take a full part in training.

Ollie Robinson, who bowled a long spell in the nets, would be another option.

One of young spinners Rehan Ahmed, Shoaib Bashir and Tom Hartley would have to make way, with leg-spinner Ahmed perhaps the most likely to miss out.

Ahmed, 19, was at training on Tuesday after experiencing a "discrepancy" with his visa as England returned to India following a break in Abu Dhabi.

This was a separate visa issue to the delay suffered at the beginning of the tour by Bashir, who had to return to the UK.

An England statement said: "There was paperwork discrepancy with Rehan Ahmed's visa. The local authorities at Rajkot Airport were supportive, enabling Rehan entry on a temporary visa.

"The correct visa should be processed and issued in the coming days. He will continue to prepare with the rest of the squad ahead of the third Test."

England are definitely without senior spinner Jack Leach, after he left the tour because of a knee injury.

India remain without Virat Kohli, who will miss the rest of the series for personal reasons, while batter KL Rahul is still injured. Uncapped pair Sarfaraz Khan and Devdutt Padikkal are competing for a spot in the middle order.

England captain Ben Stokes will play his 100th Test in Rajkot, 11 years after making his debut against Australia in Adelaide.

Stokes, 32, will become the 16th England man to reach the milestone, the latest landmark in a storied career.

"What a legend of the game," said Pope. "There are so many great memories from his career.

"It's a credit to him. What he has put his body through - he gives 110% to every Test he plays, plays every one like it is his last. You never know what you are going to get.

"He can do ridiculous things in the field, with the bat and with the ball. Long may that continue over the next few years."

Too many noobs in Indian squad. Hard to see India win without Bumrah and Kohli.

India should pick all spinner attack on the Rajkot flat pitch. Pacers will be useless there. Ashwin/Jaddu/Axar/Kuldeep/Sundar all should play. All of these spinners can bat and can score 200 runs between them easily on the Rajkot flat deck.

But knowing Dravid, he will play 2 pacers who cannot bat worth a lick.

Ben Stokes has confirmed a squad of 12 for the third Test in Rajkot this week, Mark Wood (appears likely to play) plus the XI from the last match. Rehan Ahmed's visa the one outstanding issue.

Let's see if India prepares another spin heavy wicket or provides England with a chance by having a slightly grassy wicket.

Rehan is in Rajkot training with squad & is going to be dropped as Eng likely to replace him with Wood or Ollie - still think Root as the 5th bowling option is poor & very defensive .
Pitch looks like a belter & Ind 11 , most likely would be - Rohit , Jaiswal , Gill , Sarfaraz , Patidar , Jadeja if fit or Axar , Jurel , Ashwin , Kuldeep , Bumrah , Siraj . [ hugely inexperienced line-up ]
Hopefully they would have stopped watering the pitch by now or we would be in for big scores .

This is a very good batting lineup from the Indian side. Need to try Sarfaraz and jurel in the absence of Rahul and that non-performing WK Sarat Bharat.

How To Dismiss Yashasvi Jaiswal? Ex-England Coach's Interesting Advice To Ben Stokes And Co

Former England cricket team coach David Lloyd believes that Ben Stokes and Co show play on Yashasvi Jaiswal's ego in order to dismiss the in-form youngster in the third Test match against India in Rajkot starting Thursday. Jaiswal has looked in tremendous form in the first two Test matches with a historic double century in Visakhapatnam to guide his side to victory. Lloyd believes that although there is no obvious weakness when it comes to Jaiswal's batting, England should target the left-hander with an off-spinner and tempt him to go for a big shot that may end up going to the fielder for a catch.

"Jaiswal is a dasher all right but he doesn't have an obvious weakness, so I would be thinking slightly outside the box and rather than bowling the left-arm spinner against him with the new ball, I would be tempted to persevere with the off-spinner, placing temptation in the deep. I would like to see England play on Jaiswal's ego a bit more," Lloyd wrote in his column for Daily Mail.

"You need to keep your catchers around the bat in subcontinental conditions but you also need one or two fielders hovering in strategic positions where he likes to hit the ball," he added.

Lloyd also mentioned the trap that Stokes came up with to dismiss Shreyas Iyer during the second Test match. England placed two fielders at deep mid-off and deep midwicket to induce a loft shot from Iyer and the batter ended up gifting his wicket as he was caught in that exact area.

"Dangle him a carrot by posting a deep midwicket and a deep mid-off, but two-thirds rather than all the way back to the boundary. Recall the trap Stokes set for Shreyas Iyer in the second Test, when the England captain ran towards the rope to take a very good overhead catch." Lloyd explained.

By the looks of it, IMO it will assist spinners a bit as the game goes on. It will not be a 10-degree turner but will be a slow one.
This ground normally is a pretty high-scoring one.

big 1st innings totals are a surety at Rajkot - was hoping for 1st real turner of the series here !!!

Zaheer Khan feels the Rajkot pitch will be similar to the ones in Hyderabad and Vizag, bringing reverse swing into play once again. He told the local Indian media:

"I hope the pitch is on similar lines to the one in Hyderabad and Vizag."

"On that kind of a surface, we should be able to see a good contest between bat and ball for the first two days and spin comes into play on the third day. You'll see some reverse swing as well. And on the fourth and fifth days, you'll have the spinners dominating."

"That's another headache once you have picked the squad! Whether it's going to be Axar (Patel), whether it's going to be Kuldeep (Yadav) or you are going to pick all of them."

"This is something India will be thinking about, whether you need that extra bowler along with Jasprit (Bumrah)."

"It will also depend on how the pitch is going to play, so some complex decision making will be involved. But there's a lot to think about for the decision makers."

Former England batter Owais Shah, during an interview with local Indian media, said:

"If that is the pattern, it will make for a nice viewing experience for all the spectators and the fans will enjoy."

"The big match-up will be between Jasprit Bumrah and England's middle-order. That's because Bumrah will be able to generate reverse swing in Rajkot."

"When he bowls with the old ball, it becomes difficult for the England batters. That's because he's getting wickets and not giving away runs."

I think India should not only depend on Jasprit Bumrah here. They need another speedster who can put pressure on England's batters on the other end.

That’s a good selection from England. More experience and quality in the bowling, and bolsters the batting down to 10. Bashir & Anderson coming in as the final wicket pair in the second Test was very weak.

Toss seems to be playing a crucial role here.

Whichever team bats second needs to bat big a d only bat once. Batting last on day 4 5 of India's pitches will turn alot. Unless you have a pant type player it will be hard for India. They are missing their best players.

England's captain, Ben Stokes, during the pre-match press conference:

"There are some specific reasons as to why he is not playing in this series and it should be left to that as opposed to an advantage or disadvantage to any side."

"I wish Virat with everything that's going around and all our well wishes from the team. You want the best players playing and he is one of them. Hopefully he will be back on the field very soon."

"Milestones are what they are. I've always enjoyed playing against India because of the contest, the theatre it brings."

"You look down and there's a few cracks that meet up. Only time will tell if they will come into it. (I) don't want to have too many preconceived ideas about pitches, but you do have to have some sort of idea which informs the XI you pick."

"Jasprit Bumrah is an unbelievable bowler. He's proven that for a very long time and has performed really well in the two games. I think everyone has to go their own way of not trying to deal with Bumrah but we do have to score runs off him as well and that's what we'll try to do."

"But when that doesn't work, you just have to give credit to the bowler and Jasprit's been outstanding the first two games."

"We've all got our own processes against every single bowler and there's no team way of playing anyone."

"But as we always try to do we'll be trying to keep the focus around us."

"Taking a bit of knowledge from the last Test we played here a long time ago. It was a pretty flat wicket and looking at it today I think it looks good."

"Bringing in an extra seamer is the option we have gone with because we think that is going to give us the best chance of winning this week."

"Baz (coach Brendon McCullum) does all the good and bad news and I am there for the players to (have) any further conversations with that."

"Bash (Shoaib Bashir) performed incredibly well in his first game for England, he will take it in his stride, he is a young lad and obviously no one has played every game possible."

"...whenever you've got the ball, think about taking a wicket every ball... Obviously having an extra seamer this week will definitely allow us to use Woody's skillset in a different way to the first game when he was the only seamer."

"The way in which Jimmy (Anderson) bowled last week, he showed his class and that he can do it anywhere in the world regardless of the conditions."

"Tom (Hartley) has performed so, so well on this trip not only with the ball but also with the bat and when someone has confidence like Tom has at the moment, you want to give them the ball as often as you can."

Very green squad for India in the batting department. This will be a massive transition test for India. When you consider India has three no.11s and two no.8s. one no.7 and few rookies England is odds on favorites here.

Pujara is piling up runs in domestic. So far close to 800 runs. I am sure he would have done against England too. But hope we don't go back to them again even at the risk of losing a few tests.

Back after injury, Ravindra Jadeja prepared for England challenge

Ravindra Jadeja is hopeful to return to India’s playing XI for the Rajkot Test match and has reiterated his tactic to counter England’s aggressive batting approach.

All-rounder Ravindra Jadeja stated that England were not a difficult side to beat ahead of the third Test in Rajkot that begins on Thursday.

Speaking at the press conference ahead of the Test match, Jadeja admitted that England had a different style of play and that India need to plan for it.

"I won’t term England as [the most difficult] team to beat,” Jadeja said.

“It hasn't been easy for other teams to come to India and win. They have an aggressive style of play. They connect sometimes, sometimes not. But that’s their style. We have to think about our plan B. What’s our field? We have to stick to the plan and not allow them to pile on runs.”

The all-rounder, who was out of the second Test with a hamstring injury, is hopeful to return to the XI in Rajkot. He stated that India made small errors in the second innings of the first Test which allowed the visitors to take a lead in the series, but is now confident of stifling their aggressive style of batting.

“When they are playing those shots, you can start thinking about where to bowl,” Jadeja said, adding that he plans to keep things simple without changing too much.

"It is better to keep the (bowling) lines as simple as possible in Test cricket because their batters look to play their strokes at every opportunity,” he said.

“If we adjust according to that, it is possible that we may end up giving more runs and not get wickets as well. We will keep it simple and let them do whatever they want to, we have our game plan and if we stick to it then there are chances of being successful.”

On his injury, Jadeja said that it was frustrating to miss matches and cited him diving around in the field as a possible reason for frequent injuries. Jadeja had pulled his hamstring in Hyderabad in the first Test after being run out in India's fourth-innings chase.

“I can't hide anywhere in the field, I am always in the hotspot be it any format and that’s probably the reason I get injuries,” he said.

“There is an expectation from the team that I take a good catch or field well, which is good. I need to work on my body cleverly and be careful.”

“I would like to give my 100 per cent and save my body and keep away from diving when not required,” he added.

Jadeja also said that he expects the wicket in Rajkot to be flat and hard, but agreed that the nature of the wicket keeps changing at this venue.

While there are concerns around India’s batting depth with Virat Kohli on personal leave, KL Rahul ruled out and Shreyas Iyer out of the squad, Jadeja maintained that the new players coming into the squad were good enough to step up.

“All these new boys are coming into the side after playing a lot of first-class cricket,” he said.

“These are seasoned players, they know how to play long innings and have an idea of how it goes in Test cricket.

"This was anyway inevitable, whether it comes after two years or five, it is good for them that they are getting an opportunity in the home conditions.”

The third Test begins on Thursday with the series in the balance at 1-1. The five-match series is a big one for both teams with crucial World Test Championship points up for grabs. While India are third in the points table currently, England are languishing behind at the eighth spot.

Great chance for Eng to go up 2-1 here.

The weakest Indian batting in decades.

India needs batting from Jadeja more than bowling. I think bowling department should be taken care by the rest of bowlers because we will have two newbies at 4 and 5 so Jadeja becomes important at 6.

true but Rehan as the 4th bowling option sucks imo ! @BouncerGuy @Ahmed216 the pitch is CLAY & black soil mix which means no decent bounce like in Vizzag & SLOW TURN when it comes - only hope is that there might be cracks which might open up by day 4 & aid the bowlers but then temp are reasonably cool here right now . Hope we do not end up with a high scoring DRAW ! Happy with the IND bowling line up of Bumrah , Siraj , Kuldeep , Ashwin & Jadeja ! copy @James

3 newbies - Patidar playing his 2nd & 4 if we throw in Jaiswal who is no veteran :)

Never seen such an inexperienced Indian batting middle order, been watching cricket since late 80s
I am happy to see Jaiswal , Patidar , Sarfaraz & Jurel in top 7 with combined Test experience of 7 Tests.

This is weakest Indian batting line up I have ever seen in my life.

Look at Indian batting line-up ,the most inexperienced batting line up i have ever seen .
Still good enough for win the test match.
Petel dropped from team is surprising for me as he is second best batter after jaiswal from last two test match .

As expected, Sarat left out for Dhruv and Sarfaraz is making his debut today. Let's see what this guy is made of.

Jaiswal gone he save India in first two game not today wood strike

WICKET! Jaiswal c Root b Wood 10 - India 22-1

Wood has done it for England. Jaiswal fails.

One thing that is similar between new generation Pakistan players and Indian players is that they are not consistent at all.
They will score in one test and will go missing in the other tests.

See this is what I was talking about
Pujara would have made sure to score atleast 50- 60 after scoring one century in previous test
Or even Kohli used to score minimum 2-3 hundreds

Gill can't play at flat India pitches then where his going to play

Lol 🤣🤣 no words England deserved to win this series bumrah and jaiswal can't save you every time

Sarfaraz Khan FC batting average 69.85

Now this guy looks like a big deal player.
