India will aim to continue their winning streak and inch a step closer to a spot in the semi-finals as they face West Indies in their sixth match of the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2019.

Overview:

India v West Indies

Old Trafford, Manchester
2019 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, Match 34
Thursday, 27 June; 10.30am GMT, 09.30am local

West Indies come into this match after a heartbreaking five-run loss to New Zealand – a game that seemed all but over before Carlos Brathwaite almost produced an unimaginable result. Such has been the story of the Jason Holder-led side in this tournament so far, as the little flashes of brilliance at different points haven't been enough to produce the desired results. Andre Russell, who appeared to be in discomfort each time he stepped onto the field, has been ruled out of the tournament due to a knee injury.

With mathematical permutations still giving them an outside chance for a semi-final berth, West Indies will aim to pull off a complete performance against an in-form Indian side.

The Indian bowlers once again proved their match-winning capabilities as they successfully defended a below-par score against Afghanistan on Saturday. Mohammed Shami, who picked up a hat-trick in Southampton, is likely to retain his place in the playing XI as India are unlikely to risk playing Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who was sidelined due to a hamstring injury.

The Indian middle-order will look to add more stability to the batting and bat deep into the innings to give bowlers enough runs in the bank.

Key Players

Virat Kohli (India): The Indian captain has scored fifties in each of his last three innings to give enough evidence of his batting form. Kohli, who already has 41 one-day international hundreds to his name and averages 70.77 against West Indies, will eye for another three digit score to guide his team to a position of strength.

Sheldon Cottrell (West Indies): The tall left-arm pacer from Jamaica has been a strike bowler for West Indies in this tournament, producing performances worthy of a 'salute'. Cottrell, who dismissed both the New Zealand openers in the first over and finished with figures of 4/56 against New Zealand, could be a key weapon for West Indies.

Conditions

It will be a dry and mostly sunny day with warmth and humidity. Dryness might bring the spinners into play as the day progresses. Teams batting first have won each of the three matches played at Old Trafford in this tournament so far.

Squads

India: Virat Kohli (c), Jasprit Bumrah, Yuzvendra Chahal, MS Dhoni (wk), Ravindra Jadeja, Kedar Jadhav, Dinesh Karthik, Hardik Pandya, Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul, Mohammed Shami, Vijay Shankar, Rohit Sharma, Kuldeep Yadav

West Indies: Jason Holder (c), Chris Gayle, Kemar Roach, Darren Bravo, Sunil Ambris, Shai Hope, Sheldon Cottrell, Evin Lewis, Shannon Gabriel, Carlos Brathwaite, Ashley Nurse, Shimron Hetmyer, Fabian Allen, Oshane Thomas, Nicholas Pooran

West Indies v India

• India have won four of their last six men’s ODIs against West Indies (T1, L1), including a victory
in that span by 224 runs (October 2018) – their third-largest ever victory by runs in ODIs
overall.
• India have won four of their last five ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup matches against West
Indies (L1), including the last three matches in succession.
• This will be the fifth time India (W2) and West Indies (W2) contest an ICC Men’s Cricket World
Cup match in England, with India prevailing by 34 runs in their only previous meeting in this
tournament at Old Trafford (June 1983).
• West Indies have lost their last four completed ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup matches, they
have never endured a longer losing run in the tournament’s history.
• India have won their last five completed men’s ODIs away from home; losing only twice in
such games so far in 2019 (W10).
• All three matches to have already taken place at Old Trafford so far at ICC Men’s Cricket
World Cup 2019 have seen the side batting first successfully defend their total; India (W1) and
West Indies (L1) participated in two of those fixtures respectively.
• Virat Kohli (India) has scored 1,840 runs versus West Indies in 32 ODI innings (averaging 70.8),
the second-most runs of any man against West Indies in ODI history (Javed Miandad –
Pakistan 1,930 runs).
• Mohammed Shami (India) became the second player from his country (Chetan Sharma v
New Zealand 1987) to bag a hat-trick in an ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup match during
India’s most recent fixture against Afghanistan; it was the 10th instance overall of a hat-trick
at the tournament.
• Chris Gayle (West Indies) has scored four centuries versus India in ODIs, his joint-most against
any country in the format (level with England); the most recent hundred against them came
in 2006 however.
• Carlos Brathwaite comes into this game having register his maiden ODI century last time out
(v New Zealand), his highest score before that knock was just 50; only Chris Gayle (10) has
struck more sixes at ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2019 than Brathwaite for West Indies (7).

If the wicket helps spinners than west indies will loss easily else expect a cracker of a game.

I read that this game will be hampered by rain.

India is too strong and West Indies team are out of steam, hope Vijay Shankar and KL Rahul bats well. I loved watching Mohammed Shami bowl, who are they going to play Shami or Bhuvi? I would go with Shami, can't drop a guy who just took a hat trick.

Looking at cricinfo MS Dhoni's picture, it's sad seeing him getting so old, I grew up watching his long hair bashing everyone, how times change and we grow old :inti

If there is one team well suited to beat India - due to their hitters and familiarity with the Indian way of playing - it is the Windies.

Don't think too much about the Windies bowling - but their batting can be dangerous. Expect Hope, Hetmeyer and Pooran to shine in this game. If they bat second and India don't put a good score - the game could be close.

Cricinfo probably has his picture when he was matured (probably the time when he won us World Cup!) It doesn't have the young dashing Dhoni nor it has the grandpa Dhoni of today :))

Apparently, we are playing the same XI! What a masterstroke!

West Indies can beat any team on their day. Even their #10 and #11 can start hitting sixes and take the match away from you. It's just that they lack enough consistency. I feel the most dangerous players in their team are Hope and Pooran. They apply themselves and back themselves to stay at crease.

Would've preferred us to chase today, just to check our abilities.

Good that India didn't pick Pant! Shankar deserves as many chances as Rahul or Pandya. Appreciate Virat for sticking to the same team.

Dude. that would be an arrogant move. In world cup there is no room for experiment. It can bite you in the back. They did experimenting in the warm up. That is enough.

West Indies need to win to help take down India to 2nd place, and hence setting up the New Zealand Pakistan Semi final as per every fans wishes.

Nah West Indies need to win to ensure India v England is must win for the padosis.

In case anyone was wondering (I did when the anthem came on) -

West Indies, being a confederation of Carribean nations, obviously do not have a single national anthem. The West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) has instead adopted David Rudder's 'Rally Round the West Indies' as their anthem.

David Rudder is one of the most successful Calypso artists in the region. His song 'Rally 'Round the West Indies' captures the feel and emotions of the region and hence seemed to be a good enough pick for the WICB.

I know but we've to be best prepared for all eventualities which may present themselves during the business end.

I seriously hope we win...seriously hope we find out what a waste of space over hyped kedar jadhav is.....we are carrying three hit and miss's kedar, HP and VS.....thats 3 spots....if the pitch against eng is turning, i'd want jaddu in for ky.....

Jadhav was the 2nd highest score against Afg last game, the waste of space scored runs and helped win the game where greats like dhoni and rahul failed.

True....point taken...but the gr8's not gonna fail everytime.....and the waste of space not gonna succeed everytime....my point is KJ is taking up a specialist spot....we could either do with a specialist batsman or jaddu who is any day a superior fielder than KJ , better than average batsman and his left handed ness is an advantage in a team of rhanders, and give u 10 overs of solid spin..not to mention he is good for the over rate so that india dont get docked overs....

Jaddu is a waste of batting spot, dont let one warmup match fool you, we have seen too many times in his long career, kedar is 100% better batsman than jadeja.at his spot batting is more important than bowling, jadeja is outright better bowler but when team is in a hole one less batsman would be salt to the wounds

Our middle order is poor but it isn't yet so poor that a guy with an average of 29 should bat in top 6. Only you think he is a better than average batsman, he isn't even an average batsman let alone above average, he was once upon a time an average batsman but in limited overs he is as much a batsman as binny was a cricketer.

Too cautious of a start (once again) from our batsmen.

Miss the batting of Shikhar at the top.

Rahul should actually fancy his chance today! WI try to bowl shot! Rahul is actually good at handling that! He need not worry about those inswingers & change-of-pace balls! Today is the right day for Rahul to get his confidence...

This rahul experiment really needs to end. Watching these 2 open is like watching dravid and jaffer open. We need someone who can keep the scoreboard ticking while rohit gets set, here rohit is having to do the attacking because kaptaan's buddy wants to take his own sweet time.

Trust me with sikhar out of picture ,he is still providing good support, not to mention in no mood to see horrors of one down in first five overs, tell me apart from prithvi shaw who isnt in squad seems better option to open?

Pata nahin koun saa paap kiya tha jo iss K.L. Rahul ko jhelna par raha hain.

India have gone back to 90s approach, I feel its a good ploy in the WC. Don't lose a wicket in first 10 overs

I would put pant in, shift rahul back to 4. These 2 play too similarly to be batting together.

Wait. How is that conclusive? It was passing the pad at the same time. Might’ve come off the pad. I wouldn’t have given that out. Rohit unlucky

bat, pad. There was a clear gap. From other angle. But pad was so close it even moved the flap of the pad.

Rohit was very unlucky there, questionable decision to overturn the on-field decision when the ball was parallel with the bat AND the pad, looked like the spike came from the pad.
