What's new

India defeat England by 3 wickets in the 1st ODI

Ashwin is India's next best ODI bowler next to Shami.

In terms of clutch performances across LOI tournaments, Ashwin is India's best ODI bowler by a mile post 2011.

I like how narrative easily changes based on 1 game where he was garbage.

Ashwin, apart from that series in Australia, has been pretty average. Mishra has bowled superbly whenever he got a chance. Still Ashwin/Jadeja are preferred over him for every match. I'd be devastated if I were Mishra.

Jadhav has been very impressive under pressure. Job not even half done though.

Kohli, imperious as always, but again, needs to keep going.

You want facts?

Ashwin performed very well against WI and Aus in WC 2011 before he was DROPPED to maintain status quo. Objectively the next best bowler to Zak but had to spend the SF and Finals on the bench when the world knew he was more in form than Bhajji (this was early Ashwin before his form dipped in ODIs).

CT 2013 - Performed as a good second fiddle to Jaddu throughout the tournament. In the finals, his spell of 3-0-6-2 turned the game on its head and allowed India to make a comeback.

WC 2015 - Enough said.

3 out of 3 success in ODI tournaments.

Then you have him playing a pivotal role (main guy or second fiddle to Jaddu) in many bilaterals.

Mishra is a better attacking bowler but is a mental midget. I would have him in normal games but would prefer India goes with say Kuldeep Yadav in the future.

Another reason why Mishra hasn't been selected is that he performed a lot agianst minnows and weak opponents and would go missing in main games (which is why he would get dropped in the first place).

This is the first time I think Mishra was dropped from the team after a great performance.

I can bring up similar stats for Dhawan as well. That doesn't change the fact that Ashwin has been negative when it comes to ODIs of late. Noticed this in IPL as well.

In ODI's, team India is all Kohli or nothing. I seriously doubt even Jhadav would've been doing well had Kohli not been there.

Root bowling his pies. England really need to find some decent bowling depth, this attack is not going to win a WC.

Hasn't been able to apply the kill after a good start.

Incorrect. Not in recent times.

He was negative in certain periods from 2012-14 where he was bullied like anything.

Post 2015, he had some amazing performances in ODI bowling the conventional way. Over the wicket, flight. In Bangladesh (against the new found form side), where even the world's best spinner Tahir got carted, he did very well.

Right now, he went back to the old around the wicket, leg side stuff.

I am afraid you are using old data to make your current point.

Though I agree with you on one thing. Such negative bowling should get him thrown out of the team if he persists with it. But its not true that he was that in recent times.

This has been a Kohli-esque knock by Jadhav.

He has 50 average in List A with 100 SR.

He saved India from a horrible position in Zimbabwe to notch up a brilliant ton.

Not a big hitter but can rotate strike and keep the scoreboard ticking easily.

Been advocating his selection for a long time now. We will only know who's who when we test them.

These statistics don't really tell the whole picture. I'll be honest I haven't watched many of India's matches in recent years. But from whatever I have seen of him, he doesn't seem like taking a cluster of wickets. I still have the memories of 2014 Asia Cup and others. Maybe I watched too much of IPL.

Been watching him for a while now. Seems to have the golden-arm with the ball as well and has been decent with the bat when called upon. Long-term Yuvi replacement perhaps?

You are right that he doesn't take a cluster of wickets. Doesn't even have a 5fer. Just a 4fer against UAE.

I also agree that stats don't tell the full picture. He is NO great ODI bowler.

But he is on the upswing. Just a matter of time before he corrects his ODI records.

Plus him and Jaddu have great records in England so will be needed in CT.

But if he bowls like he did today....phew....I am with you. We need to drop him and go with Kuldeep.

Mishra is a good bowler but trust me, when under the pump, he will single handedly lose you the game. Though in full flow, its way more fun to watch him than other bowlers.

Hes 32 already , may be has another 4-5 years at the max

Yuvi was more dynamic.

Dunno if Kadhav can score like this against top class pacers. Even if he could play those pacers, he can't bat like Yuvi who honestly is almost peerless in India when it comes to quality of stroke making in power hitting.

But he can perform very well in a different way and contribute to the team.

Definitely turning out to be a very good AR for India.

Good batting with some golden arm.

Let's see what the future holds for him.

Very True also when vintage Yuvi was there we didn't have someone like Kohli,so even with decent knocks Jhadav can help us clinch ODI tournaments.

Openers are big time issue for me,personally would prefer someone like Pant/(any other explosive) bat coming into play.

No one to replace Dhoni sadly but we need to replace him seems to not even be a shadow of his former self.

India is weakside right now.

Openers-nothing great,Rohit is been cold/warm.
Kohli- good
Middle order- (Raina,Yuvi,Dhoni) all either past it and wasting time or performing once in 10 matches.

Indian batting is years ahead of ours, depressing to see.

Not once I detected any fear from any Indian batsman. Not a sign of tuktuk anywhere.

How is Jayant for LOIs.Need him or Kuldeep to fire.Basically someone to bring it in to RHBs

Some of these Indian tracks are ridiculously flat but Kholi is seriously a machine.

Already a better one day batter than Sachin

This Jadhav innings is seriously jaw dropping. I was not a fan of this guy, but have been converted now.

amazing batting.. but what a poor captaincy by morgan. ball one side of wicket and try to take wickets instead morgan just looking around and letting the game drift... these two are batting like god making it look so easy

100 for kohli... Lion knows how to hunt his prey... Hail kohli.... Just stamping his greatness again. GOAT run chaser

Cricket is truly a south Asian game now - only SRL got a bit stick this week. But this is royal thrashing for the poms. Expected though - all round model doesn't work on batting belters.

indian only need 130 runs to win. England giving so many easy singles when the have plenty of runs..

Not till he defeats team away and wins in Australia and other places. Chasing there is no doubt, he has been the best ever I think in the world

Kholi you legend,, I think Kholi is the greatest batsman a have seen. I have seen, tendulkar, lara, ponting, inzi, miadad, but no one is like Kholi..Kholi is the greatest chaser and greatest batsman I have seen.

What a chase so far. Incredible. Whatever happens here, feel so lucky to be an Indian fan during this generation. Team of winners.:salute

cricket is a team sport, not tennis. what if kholi was batting for team like Poland how would he win in australia.. India do not have a team to beat in Aus,, India lack bowlers to win in australia and batsman,, Kholi and the other opener I can not remember the name play bounce the well..others are rubbish outside India

what a player kohli is...bold,daring and prodigious

More pressure you put on him more better you get from him

Glad Jadhav is proving his mettle under pressure. He's always been in situations where he didn't get much of an opportunity to play that innings that makes you sit up and take notice. Has an excellent List A record so it was only a matter of time till he translated that to international cricket.

Kohli is to cricket what Messi is to football. He's the greatest batsman in ODI history. Period. Proud to be in a generation who has seen Kohli bat in his prime.

I dont think I have seen somebody profusely praising somebody.. and yet, be getting the name wrong EVERY SINGLE TIME :yk

Great knock by Kohli and brilliant cricket by India. This is modern day cricket at its best.

Pakistan needs to learn quickly. Players like Rizwan,Asad,Azhar do not belong to modern day ODI cricket.

Sachin has won a series in Australia with a much weaker team though with back to back performances in 2 finals as recent as 2008

Having said that having someone like Kohli is a such a privelage. Man love seeing him bat

I think, you will see, pant, kishan,Sarfaraz, Hooda, suryakumar, nair, iyer, pretty soon in the ODI setup that will certainly improve our odi team, need to give chances to kuldeep and gopal too.

Yep time for new blood under new captain. Dhoni transformed out T20 team in 2007 with young blood. We need another transition like that in ODIs

That was not a weak India ODI side, but one of our stronger ones. That series was beginning of India winning the 2011 WC.

Agreed. I watch LOI cricket now a days mostly when he's on crease rest of the time I only follow up scores.

I am travelling and missing this match :(

Still feel for Manish here. He is another one who is strong mentally like Jadhav. Him should have been there for Yuvraj.
