England and India will each have to make at least one change to their XIs for the second Test with their respective bowling attacks both hit by injury.
Joe Root’s team will be without Stuart Broad for the remainder of the series after the star fast bowler suffered a torn right calf muscle during training. James Anderson is also considered a doubt for the second Test due to a thigh complaint.
If Anderson is ruled out of the match, it will be the first Test England has played without at least one of the star duo since 2016 and the first Test at home without them since 2012. It would see 312 Tests' worth of experience left on the sideline.
The injury is an untimely blow for Broad, who was set to become just the third player to represent England in 150 Tests this match. He is now targeting the Ashes in Australia later this year.
India meanwhile have lost Shardul Thakur for the match, with the seamer suffering a left hamstring injury. On the bright side for the tourists, he's likely to be fit in time for the third Test.
Thakur took four wickets in the series opener, helping set up a promising situation for India before rain ruined the final day’s play. After the match, Kohli spoke positively about the balance India had found in their XI with four seamers and spin-bowling all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, but the skipper now faces a tough choice with three quality options to replace Thakur.

Ravichandran Ashwin, the top wicket-taker in the last World Test Championship cycle, brings plenty to the table and has enjoyed recent success in conditions that don’t favour the spinners. He was pivotal to India’s success in Australia in 2020/21 and picked up four wickets in the WTC21 Final against New Zealand on a track the seamers enjoyed themselves on. He also brings the most with the bat out of any of the options.
If India decide to stick with four seamers they have strong options in both Ishant Sharma and Umesh Yadav. The most experienced member of India’s squad with 102 Tests and 306 wickets to his name, Sharma has excelled since 2018 with 80 Test wickets at 19.85 in that time.
Yadav meanwhile stood up whenever called upon in the last WTC cycle, taking 29 wickets at 18.55. That he is one of India’s better exponents of reverse swing could bode in his favour on a surface that is expected to be on the drier side.
On the England side of the ledger, Mark Wood looks the likely replacement for Broad in the XI with Craig Overton and Saqib Mahmood in contention to replace Anderson if the record wicket-taker is ruled out.
England’s fastest available bowler, Wood has played 20 Tests to date, taking 59 wickets at 33.50. A return to the XI would be Overton’s first Test since September 2019, while Mahmood is yet to make his debut.
