Second Test between Australia (445 & 89/7d) and India (260 & 8/0) ends in a draw as the 5-match series is level 1-1

KL Rahul told press after day 4 of Gabba Test:

"We don't mind playing in fast & bouncy pitches but first 20-30 overs, you have to give the bowlers respect - leave the ball & play tight as possible and then really try to cash with older ball - That is my plan to bat in Test Cricket."

"When Akash Deep and Jasprit Bumrah was batting, I was thinking more about padding up and go to bat again probably, I am not sure about they would have enforced the follow on, so I was thinking about what I need to do, but good to see yours bowlers making contribution."

Rain provide the constant aid to Indians but the real thing that damaged Australia chance of winning this Test was Hazlewood injury. Such a shame that CA acted like PCB and sent in Hazle ahead of Boland knowing that he was never totally fit.

He had fully recovered from the side strain after 20 days of rest, which is why he was selected again. He even bowled well without any issues yesterday. But then, unexpectedly, picked up a calf injury during the warm-up this morning.. no one saw that coming.

Australia Coach Makes Big 'Desperate' Revelation As India Avoid Follow-On In Brisbane Test

Australia assistant coach Daniel Vettori admitted that a resilient partnership between Indian tailenders Jasprit Bumrah and Akash Deep foiled their plans to enforce a follow-on, while also defending the decision not to declare the home team's first innings in the third Test which seems heading towards a draw. With the Indian batters, barring KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja, failing once again, it was the obstinate 39-run unbeaten partnership between Bumrah and Akash Deep that saved India the blushes as the tourists avoided a follow on a rain marred day four on Tuesday. "I think the only way to force the game was to force the follow-on," Vettori said at the post-day press conference.

"There was a desperation to get that final wicket. We thought we had a really good chance when Jadeja was dismissed, but it was a real fighting partnership from Bumrah and Deep.

"Unfortunately, just the amount of time that's been lost from the game has made it difficult," he added.

Akash Deep, making his debut in Australia, walked in to bat at 213 for 9, with India still needing 33 runs to avoid the follow-on that could have cost them the game. Alongside pace spearhead Bumrah, he guided India to 252 for 9, frustrating the home team.

Australia had ended day three on 405 for 7 but chose to bat, consuming a considerable amount of game time on a rain affected day four rather than declare their innings.

Asked if declaring was on the table, Vettori said, "No, I think we always acknowledge that first innings runs are going to be vitally important in this game.

"You don't really want to plan for weather, because we've seen on these days where it can blow past, and you can get on with things, and then it can settle in.

"So I think the conversation was mainly around, let's make the most of this first innings, trust a very good bowling unit to be able to deliver on this wicket like they did today." Australia were handed a major blow as pacer Josh Hazlewood sustained a calf injury, ruling him out of the rest of the match.

Vettori said losing one of the best bowlers in the world did affect Australia's game plan, but the rain breaks helped the pace duo of Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins without any additional burden.

"Weather allowed us to operate in terms of breaks with Mitch and Patty able to come back on multiple occasions. If it had been full 90 overs, it would have been a lot tougher to manage. We always have the luxury to bowl Nathan (Lyon). So that alleviated a little bit of the concern.

"Because of the breaks, it didn't feel like we pushed them too hard, and it was a tricky situation at the end there where the ball was incredibly soft and getting wet, but to try and push them just that little bit longer to try and get that last wicket.

"Probably that's the only time where we felt they were slightly extended, but so far it feels like the norm," he added.

Last wicket parnership of 40 runs, killed the chance for Aus.

Ind was 50/4 and have added 200 plus runs from there.

I am not sure if Aus has won any non-pink test against India at home in the last 3 series.

Aus needs to find a way to win regular tests against Ind and not just pink tests which no one else plays regularly.

Yes, Hazlewood was injured, but cummins/Starc were still bowling. Should have been able to knock off tail.

Missed oppurtunity by Aus.

Australia lack killer instinct.

Terrific effort by the Indian tailenders there.

I think the Australian bowlers were out of gas by the end and Hazlewood's injury killed their chances. This is great news for the series as the Boxing Day Test will now be an even bigger game with a lot on the line.

Aussies need 11 wickets on Day 5. I think they can do it if rain stays away.
That was possible only if they enforced follow on... Australia cannot create the magic of bowling out India's last wicket on the very first ball tomorrow, post 250 runs in 30 overs, and give a target of 400 in 60 overs (assuming we will get full day's play). That's why it is tough...

Australia media and fans turn to go after their team lol They are criticizng Australia for not declaring early. This is what happens when you have old wounds. Any other team they would have declared early.

2018 Perth match is the last time

Rohit fan bots and Kohli fan bots are curse to Indian cricket. Both have to disappear into the sunset.
I was one among those bots a few years ago. I was a huge fan of both back until 2019. I changed my mind about both 3 years ago. These two stalwarts are a major liability and they are clearly holding back Indian cricket from moving forward. Their contribution is minimal and they add a ton of pressure on the middle order with their inept batting.

The bots i am talking about are the ones who fight between each other using fake quotes from cricketers. Bishop has warned. Now Kumble has warned.

Akashdeep has outbatted both Kohli and Rohit.

Axar is our best lower batsman and he cannot find a spot in the Test team. I will take Axar over both Kohli and Rohit any day.

Axar has been badly dealt and it is total injustice to his career overall.

Rain and constant start stop never help the batting side. How did it exactly help the Indians?

wow Aussie fans are having epic melt down. They are already worried about losing the series and going after their team mercilessly. Deja vu time for them. Fans fight with eacy other. SOme have fights at home lol All fans are the same. Just that we don't care much about them.

Let's hope Rohit suffers his magical niggle (or 3rd/4th child expectation) and misses the rest of series...

Given that India are likely to save the match tomorrow and head into Melbourne at 1-1, if Shami is back it will boost India's chances. Bumrah will have a better shot at getting more LBWs something that was nearly impossible on the Gabba pitch due to the extra bounce. The real question, however, is whether India's batsmen can step up once more and deliver a solid performance to back the bowlers like the Perth test to win the series. Sydney will be a draw.

Only BCCI continue this charade

Yeah . Rain always provides help to batting sides. As proven by the history of the sport. Such educated insights into the sport

Australia lack killer instinct.
Nah, Aus has W/L of 20 at home since 2018 against all teams except India. They don't lack killer instinct.

They are just coming up against an opposition who is outplaying them in their den repeatedly. Aus needs to counter Indian better. Outside of Bumrah it's not even a great test team by India. I am dissapointed with Aus here.

Series will be then just a shoot out for 2 tests now.

First 3 tests were done at these venues intentioanlly and yet Aus will play the last 2 tests as shoot out. India is not even a that good except Bumrah. Aus needs to step up and win the last 2 tests.

How is weather predictions? Is it possible for Aus to bat 20 overs like T20 and ask India to chase?

I am not sure if Aus will go for it given Hazlewood is out. Ind top order is so shaky that Aus can have a chance.

This time they will be wary of not losing wickets upfront as Australia is a bowler short.

I think Aus., more specifically Cummins and the team think tank did not play this right. They played it a little too conservative. Did not take the weather into full consideration. They could have declared early and changed things.

Now they are going to have settle for a draw instead of a pretty much a certain win.

Yup but they didn’t expect Jaddu to happen either.

Brad Haddin thinks there's still plenty of time for an Aussie victory, forecast is unreliable ... we got 60 overs in today !

He said the same at Perth on last day lol He is the ultimate optimist of Australia. I know he may get this right. Sometimes his predictions are more patriotic than practical.

more chances of rain and thunderstorms ⛈️, so a draw seems the most likely outcome. If there was no rain, I’d expect Australia to score 100+ in less than 20 overs and set India a target of 300-320 in 65-70 overs.. I’d say it’s 70% a draw, 25% Australia win, and 5% for an improbable India win (if no rain).

He predicted 5-0 to Australia and after the first test he changed it to 4-1 to them.

Hearing tomorrow full flood coming in Brisbane. Man how lucky these Aussies are? Just when they are down and out with 1 bowler injured, rain is saving them. First umpire in last two tests and now rain.

Talking about umpires, anyone noticed how jittery they looked at that last wicket partneship? Tried to change that soft kookabura few times but luckily the machine showed ball is not of shape.

It is not really much of an advantage compared to the advantage Australia got at the Gabba in 2021. Spat of injuries. Bumrah out, Ashwin out, jadeja out. Picked a rookie pace attack. And in that attack Saini picked up injury after 6 overs just like Hazlewood did. So INdia was down with 4 bowlers.

India might get saved this game, even if rain stays away Aus will definitely bat for 30 overs to set a target.

Get lead of 180ish
Bat for 28 overs to make it 330

Try to bowl India in 60 overs.

India favourite to save the game , 1-1 for Boxing day

It's poor idea to not play like that all the time.

Play carefully in the first 25-30 overs then it becomes easier to bat. Yes, Aus had an advantage with 3 world class pacer but still it will be easier to bat later.

Aus will have to play T20 for some time here. Aus can't set a taget of 250 in 50 overs so rain has to stay away longer for make a game here. Otherwise, just a shoot out of 2 tests left.

Sheer Ego of Kohli. He has been carrying this ego for the last 4 or 5 years. He still fools himself into thinking he can still play those expansive cover drives.

Ideally India should be all out in first 2 overs. Australia then need to add 100 in 10 overs and declare and then let India bat out the day trying not to lose 10 wickets.

Turning point is KL dropped catch when he was on 33 or something. It was easy catch too. Captains should just shake hands and call it a day. It has been a farce with all the on and off outing. Funny thing was they still taking all the designated lunch, drinks, tea breaks😂

He is not fooling himself. Both him and Rohit are worth like 20 CR in IPL which is like gazzilion money in Indian currency. Most of that is tied to them playing international cricket. They are not gonna give all that up just because some fans on the internet wants them to.

Aus deserved this "humiliation" for going with basically a 2 man attack.
Nah, Hazlewood was fit and fine, it was 3 world class pacers with Lyon to support. You can't do much here.

I agree that Aus lost a big oppurtunity here. I won't call it humiliation at all. They sould have declared earlier. I was calling for that. If not for rain, Aus would have won this test despite one bowler short.

Anyway, game is not over yet. I am in the camp it's not over till last ball is bowled here. I would like to see hostile bowling by Aus even if its for 35 overs. Aus is not likely to win due to rain btu you never know.

You are not getting the point. I know why they are backed. That is not the point here. This was in response to Buffet's question of why they didn't play responsibly in the first innings without chasing wide balls. In Kohli's case it is pure ego.

Australia has more than 80% chance of winning this match.

just get rid of Gill and Rohit (probably Kohli too) and bring in Jurel and Sundar...that's it...India will win the series.
India is not able to throw washed up superstar players and u r talking about a future fake superstar too.they have to leave on their terms but not from Indian cricket point of view.they're utterly shameless

If they picked the team based on fan's reactions Kohli and Rohit would not feature in that team. Sadly we have to wait until these guys leave.

No. Indian lower order for a change did not bail India out. SO they lost. INdian batsmen average in the 30s at home for the last 5 years or so. Mostly tailenders saved us at home against every team. One time they didn't save us India lost.
Yeah, your spinning allrounders are a thorn in the side for their opponents. Thought we finally had you guys for the first time here.

Channel 7 is roasting rohit publicly for Indian fans sake.they asked rohit should retire after this series and bumrah should be the captain. As per them Rohit captaincy in the field was atrocious .am so glad atleast Aussie channel recognised it and roasted him on air

Somebody has to call these oldies out. Wasting space in the lineup.

Test cricket requires lots of patience and I doubt these grumpy old men has that.

Australia should have sent Head to open. Instead they are sending Sweeney and Khaja who have struggled through out the series.

Aus should look to score quick fire 175 in 25 overs and have India face at least 50 overs.

Against new ball if he gets out they will be in trouble.

Don't like this stop start at all. Wish it was a clear day and we could have had some good cricket.
