Ukrainian official confirms an exchange of POWs on the day Orthodox Christians in Ukraine and Russia celebrate Easter.

More than 100 Ukrainian prisoners of war have been released and returned home in a “great Easter exchange”, a senior Ukrainian official has said, as Orthodox Ukrainians marked the holiday for a second time since Moscow unleashed its brutal full-scale war last February.

Celebrations on Sunday were subdued due to security risks, with a curfew barring the faithful from customary all-night services. Even so, Ukrainian authorities and ordinary people shared messages of hope, linking the story of Jesus’s resurrection to their longing for peace and a Ukrainian victory.

Dozens of families had special reasons to rejoice, as presidential adviser Andriy Yermak announced that 130 soldiers, sailors, border guards and others captured by Moscow were on their way back home following a “big Easter prisoner exchange”.

Yermak said in a Telegram post that those released included troops who fought near Bakhmut, the eastern mining city that has for months been the focus of Russia’s grinding offensive.

“The lives of our people are the highest value for us,” Yermak said, adding that Kyiv’s goal was to bring back all remaining prisoners of war (POWs).

Moscow accidentally strikes Russian city of Belgorod
A Russian warplane has accidentally fired a weapon into the city of Belgorod near Ukraine, causing an explosion and damaging buildings, the Tass news agency cited the Russian defence ministry as saying.

Late on Thursday, local authorities reported a large blast in the city, which lies just across the border from Ukraine. The regional governor said two women had been injured.

“As a Sukhoi Su-34 air force plane was flying over the city of Belgorod there was an accidental discharge of aviation ammunition,” the defence ministry said, according to Tass.

Belgorod’s regional governor, Vyacheslav Gladkov, announcing a state of emergency, said on Telegram there was a crater measuring 20 metres (65ft) across on one of the main streets. Four cars and four apartment buildings were damaged, he added.

The defence ministry did not say what kind of weapon was involved, Reuters reports. The Su-34 is a supersonic fighter-bomber jet. The ministry said some buildings had been damaged and announced an investigation was already under way, according to Tass.

Video footage from the site showed piles of concrete on the street, several damaged cars and a building with broken windows. One shot showed what appeared to be a car upside down on the roof of a store.

The Belgorod region is one of several parts of southern Russia where targets such as fuel and ammunition stores have been rocked by explosions since the start of what Moscow calls its “special military operation” in Ukraine in February 2022.

The Russians according to the leaked documents have reduced the air defence of Ukraine severely. The Ukrainians have 7 times more casualties and the Russians don't have maintenance or logistics issues to the extent Ukraine do because they are using their own equipment.

Lol you seem very confident. Are you aware that the russians will not engage those tanks directly? Western tanks are built to fight using combined arms warfare. That takes years to master.

Ukrops have amassed 48k troops for this counter off3nsive. That is not enough. If you think bakhmut was a meat grinder wait till you see what is coming now. So the whole Russian army has only 500 tanks..ok mate keep believing this nonsense.

Look I have no skin in this game. Two Europeans fighting it out. But I am interested in the military aspect. From I can see and read this counter offensive needs air cover. A Ukrainian journalist working with reporters for La Repubblica has been shot dead by Russian snipers in southern Ukraine, while his Italian colleague was injured, the Italian newspaper said on Wednesday.

“Today, our correspondent Corrado Zunino and his fixer Bogdan Bitik were victims of an ambush near the bridge in Kherson by Russian snipers on the outskirts of Kherson, in southern Ukraine,” La Repubblica said.

“Bitik unfortunately did not make it and died: he leaves behind his wife and a son. Corrado, who was wounded in the shoulder, is in the civil hospital in Kherson,” it said.

That would depend on what the leaked documents are trying to achieve. Were they authored to gain more funding for weapons, were the authored to gain a political advantage, were the authored to appease a certain group, were they authored to create fear. These type of documents are never straight forward and can be used to push agendas in directions that the author wants. You can get what ever you want from them depending on what you want from them.

Kirby did not detail how the US calculated the deaths, but said about half were fighting under the Wagner mercenary group, rather than with the Russian military. They were being sent into battle without proper training or leadership, he added.

Majority of the 20k are part of the penal battalion. A russian war tradition. In other words expendable. On the other hand ukrops have lost battalions of elite troops. Bakhmut is almost done. Ukrops are destroying large high rise buildings as they retreat. They hold only 2 km. The battle turned as soon as the Russian airbourne got involved and relieved wagner.

I would suggest the ukrops concentrate on their spring offensive which is now under intense air attack. Let's see what happens.

Nord Stream: Report puts Russian navy ships near pipeline blast site

Russian ships able to perform underwater operations were present near to where explosions later took place on the Nord Stream pipelines, according to an investigative documentary.

Underwater explosions last September knocked the two Nord Stream pipelines - built to carry gas from Russia to Europe - out of action.

The cause of the blasts is unclear.

In the immediate aftermath, some in the West pointed the finger at Russia, while Moscow blamed Western countries, including the UK.

More recently, there were reports that intelligence pointed towards pro-Ukrainian operatives, although not the Ukrainian government itself.

Formal investigations are still taking place in countries close to the blast site. So far, these nations have only said they believe the explosions were the result of sabotage rather than any kind of accident.

But the latest programme in the TV documentary series Putin's Shadow War and accompanying English language podcast Cold Front provides one possible lead pointing towards Russia's involvement.

The series by Denmark's DR, Norway's NRK, Sweden's SVT, and Finland's Yle broadcasters revealed last month that Russian vessels appeared to be mapping out wind farms in the North Sea, including off the UK coast.

Now, the latest episode focuses on what they say are suspicious ship movements in the run-up to the Nord Stream blasts.

As for what prigozin is going on about. His troops just pounded the high rise buildings area with artillery. They are not running out of anything anytime soon. It's his job to keep the generals honest as he knows he himself is expendable.

The Russians have Brought up the TOS-1 thermobaric weapon and their FAB500. These things are horrific devastating weapons.

They just destroyed a large amount of ammunition and storage of ukrops. This is gonna hamper their so-called counter offensive. You talk about a lack of tanks oh bhai they have brand new T90M's on the border.

But, Shoigu added, “Right now, it is necessary to double the production of high-precision weapons in the shortest possible time”.

Military analysts have been trying to determine whether Russia is running low on high-precision ammunition as its missile barrages against Ukraine have become less frequent and smaller in scale.

The Institute for the Study of War said on Wednesday that Shoigu’s comments on missile production were likely designed to deflect from claims that his ministry was unable to keep Russian forces adequately stocked with ammunition as well as to appear proactive amid concerns of the impending Ukrainian counteroffensive.

Bakhmut is practically done..but it's modern urban warfare..its not like Iraq that has spoiled arm chair warriors like us.

Every inch is a grind but who is better prepared to handle this? The Ukrainians have admitted they are finding it difficult to raise new formations. They just raised a 40k strong storm formation but admit it it made up of wx policemen older veterans and very young men. They need at least 6 months of proper training which they can't do..what do you think will happen when they arrive in bakhmut?

No doubt the Russians have been facing difficulties. They are facing a russian force. Its practically a civil war. These wars are dirty gritty and long. I would say the Russians will eventually recover and pretty quickly. Their economy has handled things for now. The geopolitical impact of the invasion is now coming to the fore. E.g. the impact on the middle East the impact on the sub continent etc.

From our point of view as a Pakistani and Indian things are moving very very quickly. There is the chance that we could be seeing an eventual detente between our two countries but that is dependent on our wardi walay and your sanghis.

There have been numerous attacks in Moscow, inc assassinations. There has been a long presence of US/western intel agents in this nation going back to the Cold War. It makes no sense for Putin to use a false flag attack on the Kremlin, as this doesn't look good on Russia at all. With Drone tech its near impossible to track and stop attacks, a 16 year old can use a drone in the UK and hit the commons, big ben or even MI5 building, it wont do much damage unless it has detonation parts inside.

Explosions have been heard in Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities, a day after Russia accused Ukraine of carrying out a drone attack on the Kremlin.
