West Indies v Australia | 1st test | Kingston, Jamaica | starting from May 22nd 2008

I know Noffke isn't a suitable long-term replacement, but if we're going to waste the new ball at least let it be on someone who can bowl line and length and make the batsman play, unlike Johnson.

Darren Pattison is very very mediocre and bowlers like him come dime a dosen in Aus club cricket. The only reason he's doing well in County Cricket is because it's County Cricket. Even Kaneira can take wickets and make runs in that thing (no offensive pak supporters.) His brother however, James Pattison, has alot of pace for his age (18) and Damien Fleming cites him as the best young prospect he's seen in along time.

And i dont know when you last watched domestic cricket Random Aussie. at present Victoria do have a nice collection of quicks. Denton for instance is the best swing bowler in the competition when he's not injured, and likewise Allen Wise who would have been in Johnsons place had he not been injured every other day. Pete Siddle is the best young bowler in the country. Infact he's probably a little unlucky not to be considered for this tour; hits great areas and cuts and swings it at good pace.

I do rate Hilfenhaus, but he's been horribly out of form, he needs to have at least one more good year before being considered for test selection. That said, If Johnson can get selected on the basis of virtually no FC cricket whatsoever, nevermind his form, then I won't be surprised if its sooner.

Siddle and Bollinger are the two players we must nurture to replace Lee and Clark in a couple of years time, with Tait/Hilfenhaus making up the third quick option.

Cheers for the info mate - it's tough to keep up with domestic form here in the City of the Red Sox. You're absolutely right that we need to start thinking about when Lee and Clark retire. Can you provide a list of all domestic quicks we have who can move the ball, either in the air or off the seam (aside from those you mentioned above)?

And what's the latest on young Tait? I'm guessing he's played no cricket at all since he unretired when the FC season was over?
 
Hilfenhaus, Bollinger and Gerard Denton are the only real genuine swing bowlers in the competition, though Denton being 32 is unlikely to have an international career. Alot of other bowlers can swing it, but only these three really do it consistently, though young Moises Henriques moves the new ball around quite drastically too, but he still needs to actually get a game first. Brett Geeves for Tassie gets abit of movement either way, but I don't really rate him. Peter Siddle is a good one, doesn't get much swing perse, but can nip it off the seam uncomfortably either way, a la Gillespie in his prime. Mark Cameron of NSW is a similar type bowler.

A few younger bowlers to watch out for in the upcoming season (if they get a game) are;

Ben Cutting; Tall quick QLD bowler, good bounce. Injury prone.
James Patttison; as aforementioned, a really quick and aggressive bowler. Will hit 90mph consistently when he's fully matured.


Tait is back in training and has stated something along the lines of 'pace not being everything' and that he needs to work on 'hitting consistent lines and lengths', the realisaton of which has come abit late Taity, but better late than never.

Anyway, good to have somebody who knows something around here. That Random Aussie bloke spews erraneous comments allover the place, reading through his post is like correcting someones bad grammar ;-)

Dude did you read what I wrote? I am Victorian and do follow domestic cricket. I said the Vic bowlers get injured too much to be in contention.
You have a go at me, then list the Victorian bowlers and note their injuries after each one. :20: You forgot to mention Siddle has a dodgy shoulder.

The Victorian quicks are good, especially Siddle but atm they only play half a season - which is why they are not in contention for a spot in the Australian side.
 
While we wait for the start, let's continue with our list of mavericks. Paul Smith is our first man today. There was some rain in the morning. It's stopped now but the forecast has some showers during the day. Hopefully it will stay out of our way
