What's new

1st Test, Lord's : England beat New Zealand by 124 runs

Cook ensured it will be a draw.

Barring the first 1 hour of play where bowlers are getting some assistance, its a flat pitch.

Stokes brilliant innings ends.Fabulous 101 off just 92.

Lots of caution and pessimism about England still. Tbh I strongly believe that they have batted extremely well in bowling-conducive conditions and already have quite a competitive score! Feeling confident personally.

They should win the game from here, expect Mo to spin the kiwi tail into a web after Anderson gets a 5fer

They love taking digs at Nasser Hussain :))) "When you retired the game got richer and commentary got poorer" haha

150 for Chef.

This England side would look pretty good with an aggressive opener next to Cook. Can the new boy be that player?

Who? Hales?

What do you think of Jason Roy?

I think they should give Hales or Roy a go but it's too late now with the Ashes around the corner

I like Hales. I think he should have been playing tests and ODIs for two years.

Don't know much about Roy.

Lyth played a few shots in the second dig before he got out.

I forgot Lyth made his debut :))) he never made any kind of impression.

It's quiet astonishing that Hales has been out of the ODI team given the modern demands of the game, his T20 record is phenomenal. If Hales could replicate even half of what Tresco was able to achieve he'd be a winner, really think he'd do well opening the innings.

Don't expect him to get big hundreds but smashing a quick 40 or 50 would really help take the shine off the new ball in testing conditions; on the flatter tracks I'd expect him to really cash in. Bats at no.3 in county cricket and has displayed descent temperament despite the aggression which is controlled in the FC format. Averages 66 in his last 10 innings in FC cricket for Nottingham with a top score of 236; I'd have picked him over Lyth. Graves loves his yorkshiremen.

Jason Roy is one for the future, he's a player that's quiet similar to Hales; needs to be given a good run in the limited forms ASAP. Not sure but Think he's in the lions and T20 squads, that's a start I guess.

So another 50 tomorrow and eng should declare, they are on the ascendency and try to go for the win, eng have come back from almost impossible to win to possible.

NZ blew their great adv and they should play for the draw. Circa 350 to chase on the final day no matter where you are playing is difficult.

Michael Clarke would have declared five minutes before the start tomorrow. Such a troll. :mc

Not just Cook every captain is a coward these days except Clarke and to an extent Baz.

I don't understand some fans.

Got a feeling england might just roll them late on day 5, kiwis must be pretty disappointing with this match they had england in trouble both innings and still with plenty of help for the quicks and they just couldn't make it mean anything in the end.

Still think their attack(while solid) is over rated by many here, people talk about southee like he is a proven world class quick but the bloke has worst test numbers than peter siddle.

Agreed, they've got a young competent attack but unproven at many levels.

Time to go importing for one then

Nah, they bring grief. If we catch them young enough such as Stokes (moved to the UK aged 12) they can integrate but if they come over here at 18 they are already set in their ways and cause dressing-room strife.

Chef will declare too late like he did last year against SL, where they were nine down at the close and he proceeded to lose the series. Might be better if the Kiwis bowl us out!

People here get carried away with JAMODIs. Tests are completely different. I think Southee is a good bowler but Stokes mullered his new ball spell.

They are pretty similar to England overall - decent seamers, no credible spin option - except that their top order plays with more freedom. We need an aggressive opener, as Chef and Zimbo Gaz just sit there and let themselves get bowled at.

NZ should have been given three tests and some of the JAMODIs taken out.

To say that we were 30-4 after an hour, and then New Zealand were 470-5 in the 1st innings, and then we again replied with 35-2, I find it quite unbelievable that we are now likely to either win this game or at least escape with a draw. New Zealand should be very disappointed with their lack of ruthlessness.

In fairness it's a tough declaration to work out when it's only a 2 test series and the run rate for this test has been around 4 all match as you said probably better if england just hit out early and if they get bowled out so be it.

England's Middlesex supremo sacked the Lancashire coach while overlooking to dismiss his Middlesex assistant coach, who obviously is in no way to blame for losing at home to Sri Lanka, drawing with the West Indies and stuffing up the World Cup.

Farbrace made the decisions to move Stokes up to #6, and push Moeen down to make him think like a bowler, and both decisions have been right so far.

Mediocre losers who can't hold a bat getting destroyed by a better team. What's there to see? Batters poking and prodding interminably and getting dismissed nonetheless. Sheer incompetence and nothing more.

What do you think now?

It's okay Robert. I actually like and admire Farbrace!

Give Brendan (that's a girls name) McCullum an insanely dangerous number to chase and he will go for it just to protect his reputation as aggressor and will be hoist by his own petard.

If it's cloudy, should declare overnight. It's Cook though so he'll declare....not at all.

High white clouds over London today. Maybe 50% cover. Quite bright. No guarantee of swing though, there never is.

Big crowds round the nets today, with people queueing up for autographs from Root and Stokes, and Chef getting the biggest cheer of all.

I think Moeen has been given licence to swing, and they'll declare when he gets out.

What? This match has been enthralling from ball one!

How?
If your and english fan yes but for the neutral in which way? It has been high scoring with almost nothing in it for the bowlers.

It will be a boring draw unless we see a special spell or a big mac crazy like innings.

Any test match will yield something of value to the understanding fan, and this one has had four days of subtle flows of play so far. It could peter out to a draw and still be a wonderful spectacle.

Chef's out. Declare now!!!!

It may not be an enthralling test but it's not a boring one either. England were 30/4 and 30/2 in both their innings and NZ were 470/5 at one stage. It's very clear that one team tried to runaway with the game but the other team trying it's best to stay in the game. And the match is in a very nice position and not over yet.

And at this point all four results are possible.

Moeen's out, and still England bat on. Weird. How many can two #11s add at what speed, Chef?

New Zealand need 345 to win off 77 overs. Excellently poised match.

We needed that collapse to get enough overs to bowl them out.

They can't score the runs - we can just bowl wide lines if we have to.

I would have declared overnight, to ensure a second new ball for 10 overs in the final session.

Well thats an awful start.

I really don't want to see one of the trademark NZ roll over in the 2nd innings of previous years.

Now some fans will understand why aggression only is not what cricket is.
