Cricket Australia has today announced a 12-player squad to face Pakistan in a three-day, day-night tour match in Cairns next week.

Will Bosisto (C) WA
Jake Carder WA
Alex Gregory SA
Josh Inglis WA
Ryan Lees TAS
Arjun Nair NSW
Jimmy Peirson QLD
Matthew Short VIC
Mark Steketee QLD
Cameron Valente SA
Cameron Wheatley TAS
Jake Winter SA

Coach: Brad Hodge
Assistant Coach: Troy Cooley

The pink-ball match will be played from Thursday 8 December to Saturday 10 December at Cazaly’s Stadium, ahead of the Commonwealth Bank Day-Night Test against Pakistan, which begins on 15 December at The Gabba.

The squad contains some of Australia’s best emerging talent, including seven players with full state contracts and four state-listed rookies.

Four players – Arjun Nair, Will Bosisto, Mark Steketee and Cameron Valente – have already played Sheffield Shield cricket during their careers, while 10 members of the squad played in this season’s Matador BBQs One-Day Cup.

Six players represented the CA XI at the Matador BBQs Cup, including Bosisto, who passed 50 runs twice during the tournament, and Matthew Short, who has scored half-centuries for the CA XI and a Victorian XI in tour matches against South Africa during the past two months.

A further four players – Steketee, Valente, Alex Gregory and Jimmy Peirson – represented their respective states in the Matador BBQs Cup, with all-rounder Valente scoring a century and claiming 15 wickets from six matches to be the tournament’s equal leading wicket-taker.

Brad Hodge, who coached the CA XI during the Matador BBQs Cup, will coach the side for this tour match, with Bupa National Cricket Centre Head Coach Troy Cooley to be his assistant coach.

“This is a really exciting challenge for these players to test themselves against a world-class opponent in Pakistan,”
Cooley said.

“Every member of this squad has played First Class, List A or Futures League cricket in the past 12 months, and we are confident that this opportunity will benefit these players as they look to press their claims for state selection, and hopefully in years to come, national honours."

“Already this season, we have seen some extremely positive signs as a result of players getting the opportunity to test themselves at a higher level of cricket through the CA XI, with Arjun Nair among the top ten wicket-takers in the Matador BBQs Cup and Ryan Gibson among the top ten run-scorers."

Eight members of this squad passed 40 with the bat at least once during this season’s Matador BBQs Cup, which is just one sign of the talent that exists within this group of players.

“It is essential we continue to challenge players coming through the Australian Cricket Pathway by exposing them to a high level of cricket, and as a result, strengthen the depth of our playing stocks right across the country.”

Following this season’s Matador BBQs Cup, three players who represented the CA XI during the tournament have gone on to earn Sheffield Shield call-ups.

New South Wales batsman Ryan Gibson earned his Blues debut, while Victoria ‘keeper Sam Harper and Western Australia allrounder Will Bosisto returned to represent their respective state sides.

The squad will train in Cairns on Tuesday and Wednesday ahead of the match.

Former Australian coach Mickey Arthur leads Pakistan team into Cairns for tour match

PAKISTAN cricketers have arrived in Cairns today in a week-long preparation before next week’s tour match with Cricket Australia XI at Cazalys Stadium.

Former Australian coach Mickey Arthur led the squad into the arrivals lounge at Cairns Airport fresh off a whitewash Test series loss to New Zealand.

South African-born Arthur, who recently became an Australian citizen, was appointed Pakistan coach this year and will face Australia for the first time since his tumultuous two-year tenure as the national coach came to and end in June 2013.

He said it was great to return home and for the players to escape the cool climes of New Zealand.

“The boys don’t do too well in that cold so it’s nice to get to a hotter climate for them,” Arthur said.

“We’re going to have one or two down days here before we start preparing properly on Monday.”

Pakistan will hold their first training session at Cazalys on Friday afternoon before some time off for sightseeing on Saturday.

A Sarfraz emoji with those sunnies and headphones would be great :))
Would have preferred that we got a stronger side to face, but some practice is better than no practice :misbah

Cairns from what I've read provides quite challenging wickets. So this will be good preparation.

2nd XI though most are consider good young prospects for state level and some future internationals.

Cairns from what I've read provides quite challenging wickets. So this will be good preparation.

The wicket looks green usually, but it is thick, coarse grass and usually it's flat, doesn't bounce much and allows huge scores.

What is different this time is that:

1. The game is under very dodgy floodlights.
2. It's the rainy season.
3. The Cricket Australia XI is a bunch of nobodies.

It probably would have been better if Pakistan had flown over six extra players to Sydney or Brisbane and played against their own A team.

This is just deliberately bad preparation, like Cricket Australia gave the Kiwis last year.

IS THERE NO WAY WE CAN GET MOHD ASIF OVER TO LEAD THIS PACE ATTACK. INZAMAM BEING SILLY HERE, he should have planned his come back as well. He will be missed by Pakistan.

THE Pakistan cricket team may be in the Far North to familiarise themselves with a pink ball but they found time to hit a small white one as they sample paradise.

After their Test match tour of New Zealand, Pakistan coach Mickey Arthur gave the team two days downtime over the weekend in tourist haven Cairns.

About eight of the Pakistan touring party teed off at Paradise Palms Country Club yesterday afternoon before they got back to cricket training today.

Some of the team played a round at Cairns Golf Club on Friday, experienced the Great Barrier Reef on Saturday before finishing their weekend at Paradise Palms, all part of the fun before the serious business starts.

Paradise Palms Country Club pro Daniel Gawley said the group decided to play just the nine holes yesterday.

“Most certainly, they looked all dressed up for the occasion,” he said.

“I am not too sure but it looked like there was seven players and one support staff member.”

Pakistan will switch their focus back to the pink-ball today ahead of their match against the CA XI which will be played from Thursday to Saturday at Cazalys Stadium

Inzamam so far has been poor.

Same team played in UAE , same in NZ and now same in Australia. No change.

Worse than poor.

Two A team Test tours - to England and Zimbabwe - were not used to groom quick bowling all-rounders. Aamer Yamin and Amad Butt should have played every match, but quite the opposite.

Meanwhile New Zealand had six right-handers in their Top Seven batting order while Australia has only two.

But Inzamam sent the precise same attack to both.

I'm not sure that this is negligence: I think it's just plain incompetence.

For three straight series , it cannot be mistake. Inzamam as captain was also very obstinate , he keept on bowling same bowlers , even when they were not working.

After the NZ loss , there should have been some reaction, you need to show that you are not happy with the performance. You have to be bold and take action. younis , rahat , nawaz should not be in squad . Amir should be warned , so that he does not take his place as granted.

Yes we surely showed our mettle on the shores of New Zealand..

Yes. That would be the equivalent of a kitten distracted by a bright shiny object. Throw out the last 5 years because two test went wrong.

2 + 1 against West Indies.

That is 15 days of cricket that you lost on the trot and yes such a situation warranted atleast a couple of changes.

But, who am I kidding you are a fan of Azhar's captaincy. You wouldn't want to make changes until we reach number ninth in tests.

Oh since you put it that way 2+1 out of 50....

sure: 9 out of 50 - sounds compelling.

You will keep holding onto that 50 number or do you want me to rip it apart some more?

Kind of makes sense why you support Azhar now..

I have no idea what you are talking about other than crying over however far back your memory goes.

Because there's no need to change for the sake of

You mean we didn't need mass culling of a team that only prior to the NZ tour went on a 7 Test series unbeaten run for only the third time in Pakistan history ?!

Let's not get too worked up over this match .... as long as we get some good batting practice. I hope this match will provide no excuse, like we had in NZ, that here was no match practice!!!!

Pakistan XI: Misbah (c), Aslam, Azhar Ali, Babar Azam, Younis, Shafiq, Sarfraz (wk), Nawaz, Wahab, Amir, Rahat
