Simple formula, win 2 matches and become ICC Champions :31:

Not so simple is the fact that you need to beat New Zealand and then Australia :(

Pakistan looking confident but 2 issues to worry about

1. Pakistani batting
2. Weather

Our bowling department is well served and barring some debate on whether Asif will play or not, the bowling attack looks settled.

Anyways, as ever, Pakistan Zindabad!

Semi Final 2: Pakistan vs New Zealand, ICC Champions Trophy, 2009: October 3rd, 2009

Venue: Wanderers

Stats say: (last five completed matches, most recent first)

Pakistan - LWWWW [:)]
New Zealand - WWLLL

Pitch : Always a mystery! However Cricinfo says:

"Vettori expects a pitch similar to the one New Zealand scored 300-plus on against Sri Lanka. "Looks like the Sri Lanka wicket, lots of runs in it. If so we're going to have to step up with the bat." There's only a 40% chance of rain but if the match is washed out, New Zealand will go through by the virtue of having topped Group B."

Team Updates:

From cricinfo:

"Imran Nazir is fit and should take Misbah-ul-Haq's place. The difficult problem is one that other teams would kill for: does Mohammad Asif go out for Mohammad Aamer? Rana Naved-ul-Hasan and Umar Gul will be difficult to keep out too. If the Wanderers pitch looks especially green, they could go in with four fast bowlers too. What a throwback it would be but that's unlikely to happen if the pitch is dry. "

Pakistan squad [unconfirmed]
Kamran Akmal†, Imran Nazir, Younis Khan*, Shoaib Malik, Mohammad Yousuf, Shahid Afridi, Umar Akmal, Naved-ul-Hasan, Mohammad Aamer, Umar Gul, Saeed Ajmal

New Zealand squad [unconfirmed]
BB McCullum†, AJ Redmond, MJ Guptill, LRPL Taylor, GD Elliott, NT Broom, JEC Franklin, DL Vettori*, KD Mills, IG Butler, SE Bond

Match scheduled: 14:30 local time (12:30 GMT)

Toss : Pak win the toss and decide to bat

Weather report (BBC/weathercity.com)

Showers are forecast today but these forecasts have been notoriously inaccurrate in the past - could this be a D/L effected outcome OR will Pakistan lose out in a different way?

Ok latest weather from Johannesberg is http://www.wunderground.com/global/stations/68368.html

19C and partly cloudy - a 40% chance of rain exists today. Hopefully if rain does come, it will be a partial delay and not a total wash out.

Will this effect what decision the captains take after winning the toss?

Almost an hour to go before toss happens etc - thread will be open by then.

Good luck Pakistan:19:!

Should be a cakewalk in my honest opinion with Kiwis being the opponents:)!

Wasim Akram on pitch: A belter. Won't change during the match. The little grass that is there is all brown. The better team should win. Toss doesn't matter. The bowlers should try the swing in the first couple of overs, and failing that should go for wicket to wicket stuff.

Aamer Sohail: It looks Wasim Akram got it right. But if the groundsman has overdone with the water, then we may see double pace later. Pakistani batsmen would be happy to see the pitch.

Ramiz Raja: The toss doesn't matter on this one. The pitch will support strokeplay. The bowlers will have to be innovative after the first few overs. Rana Naveed important.

Toss!!!!!

Pakistan has won the toss and elected to bat 1st.

Aamer Sohail reckons 225-250 ought to be enough with five bowlers.

YK reckons over 200 is good.

YK unfit but is playing. Aamer back.

Vettori thinks anything under 300 will be good effort by his bowlers.

No news on Pakistan's line-up besides Aamer coming back into the team

NZ make one change. Opener Aaron Redmond is in for Gareth Hopkins. Guptill might move to one-down now

Afridi opening? I would like to think so. Hes useless down the order, let him create some havoc with the fast Bond, ball comes onto the bat.

Vettori says anything less than 300 is chasable. Ramiz reckons YK's 200 is because of not wanting to put batting under pressure, whereas in reality he wants more.

Amer Sohail thinks Vettori's 300 figure is to put Pakistani batsmen under pressure to go for it foolishly. He reckons 250 is enough.

A lot of bluffing and reverse bluffing going on. :))

Same XI is playing- the one that fielded against India that is

Nazir and Aamer in with Misbah and Asif missing out

Cant wait for some fireworks by Imran Nazir today....would like to see someone else in at number 3....maybe something from left field to make avail of the powerplays like Rana Naved or Umar Akmal as was mentioned before

Pak same team as the first 2 matches. Imran Nazir is back. No Asif.

All day night matches at this venue during this tournament have been won by the team batting second.

Go for 300.

They mostly underestimate the pitch.

And NZ just made 315 against SL.

Wrong, Australia beat Windies while batting 1st.

four times day nights have been played and every time it the team batting second that wins. supposed to be a really fast high scoring game....

why are they batting first! Dew factor will also come into play?

Because Newzealands batting is their weakness and Pakistan bowling is their strength.

When the 2nd innings come- Newzealand will find it difficult to chase even 220

And what about chasing in a big game, the pressure?

thats exactly what i was thinking...sky comentators also saying side batting second has won...

how wrong can they be?????????????

We would seriously be in danger of choking batting 2nd

Batting first is the correct decision, no doubt about that. We can't chase.

Imran Nazir show starts in twenty minutes, Inshallah.

Please Nazir just stay for atleas 40 balls lol... need a good start and try get pass Bond

I love the way he said 300 Pak need to try and put the pressure on us !

I hope they come out positive. I guess that is not an issue with Nazir - but I hope he lasts at least 10 overs.

Salam Legendary_Sage! How are excitement levels in Lahore?

Shahid Afridi will fare well in all his affairs today.

I guarantee this.

How many all-rounders have 250+ wickets and 5000+ runs in ODI history?

OK. Why did we select to bat?
Same pitch which helps bowlers in the begining and if it rains, don't you want to bat in 2nd innings to stay R/R based on D/L.

Hope YK knows what he is doing!

We cant blame the ICC for this pitch :D

Soo far everything going pakistans way just hope the weather stays away and we win!

Shahid Afridi will take the tide at the flood
The tide in the affairs of men

No. :yk

Imran Nazir better perform today as he'll be facing pressure of not scoring anything above the 20 mark so far since his comeback!

InshahAllah hope he'll and the whole team will do well!

hope the ball doesn't swing or seam at the start a lot because then we are in trouble ....

I would have also batted first but this decision could seriously backfire due to variables such as overcast conditions and rain

Inshallah we will post 270+

I don't know if this is the correct word to use for the acts we wish Shahid to perform. :afridi

...which will lead on to fortune?

But, however, if we are bereft of this -it is omitted- then all the voyages of Pakistan's life will be bound in shallows and in miseries.

Let us hope it does not come to this :127:

The answer to the first question is, the eleventh commandment: Thou shalt not bat second in an ODI after winning toss.

The answer to the second one is, it is best not to consider rain too much. If it rains it rains. No need to surrender your strengths because of a certain percentage of precipitation.

I'm with YK.

Younis is a bit of Imran with predictions (example Fawad Alam/cricket ball and 100). He had said that Imran Nazir will play at least one game changing innings in the tournament. Considering that the chances of such an innings against the disciplined Aussies is low, today may be the day!

I believe it to be the perfect word to use.

All set for the audio-visual debauchery of today, Jamal?

Thanks for asking brother.
Today i am not in lahore.I am in multan now a days.
You know "naukar ki te nakhra ki".
In multan i am pretty excited and few of my friends have the same feeling.
But to be honest its not like the days of 90's when roads used to be empty before the start of play.Like 92 or 96 world cup matches.
