The post-World Cup revamp hasn't unfolded as planned for Pakistan, especially with their Test series in Australia yielding no victories once again. However, in T20 cricket, they enter with confidence following successful campaigns in the 2021 and 2022 T20 World Cups, reaching the semifinals and going a step further. Despite a disappointing ODI World Cup in India prompting leadership changes, the excitement builds as Shaheen Afridi assumes captaincy, with Mohammad Rizwan as his deputy, freeing up Babar Azam.

Shaheen, among the world's leading fast bowlers, earned this leadership opportunity by guiding his PSL side to consecutive titles. With another T20 World Cup approaching, the series also serves as a chance for Pakistan to test inexperienced players in the squad. While Saim Ayub's international career has had a modest start, glimpses of potential were seen in the CPL. Aamer Jamal, impressive in Tests against Australia, may now earn T20 caps.

The bowling unit, strengthened by Haris Rauf's return, poses a challenge for New Zealand, who will also be cautious of Zaman Khan, last faced by them a year ago. Zaman's noteworthy BBL stint, claiming eight wickets in four games, adds to Pakistan's bowling strength. Kane Williamson returns to New Zealand's T20 side after over a year, and after a scrappy performance against Bangladesh, they face a formidable challenge in Pakistan, a stronger T20 opposition.

During the previous T20I held at this venue, Sri Lanka and New Zealand participated in a high-scoring tie, ultimately decided by a Super Over. However, a few days before that match, Sri Lanka suffered a setback by being bowled out for a mere 76 at the same venue. Match day is anticipated to have clear skies.

All eyes will be on Matt Henry as he makes his comeback after sustaining an injury midway through the ODI World Cup. Devon Conway, who was given a rest during the Bangladesh series, is anticipated to reclaim his spot.

While attention will be on the new captain, Shaheen, Pakistan has selected several players with limited experience at this level. It will be intriguing to see how many of them seize the opportunity in the opening game.

King Shaheen 🦅 Vs King Williamson 🧔‍♂️

:pkflag

If bat first score atleast 190 plus 😎

Today marks the start of Shaheen's career as the t20 captain of Pakistan. With T20 world cup coming up in few months, this series will be a huge task for Shaheen and co.

Babar Azam has to be there today IMO. This combination needed to be experimented with. He should be rested for 2 matches minimum out of 5 though.

So Pakistan chose to go with 2 full-time pacers and 3 all-rounders (i am considering abbas as an allrounder because he can bat a bit) Abbas, Jamal, and Iftikhar along with a leg spinner Usama. I am happy with his team TBH. Yes, Zaman might have missed out but he can always come in for Haris or abbas in the next game incase they fail, Haris can be replaced only though, I will keep abbas in for all 5 matches.

Loving the playing 11. Usama deserved basis BBL performance and Abbas Afridi too basis last PSL stint.

Mitchell Santner ruled out of Black Caps' first T20 international against Pakistan

Mitchell Santner has been ruled out of the first Twenty20 international between the Black Caps and Pakistan on Friday night.

The all-rounder tested positive for Covid-19 on Friday morning.

In a statement, New Zealand Cricket said he would be monitored over the coming days and would travel by himself to his home in Hamilton, where the second international is on Sunday night.

Friday’s match at Eden Park in Auckland is the first of five meetings in four cities in the space of 10 days between the teams ranked fourth (New Zealand) and third (Pakistan) in the world.

They met in the semifinals of the last World Cup, in Sydney, Australia, in November 2022, with Pakistan prevailing on that occasion.

It should be a hard-fought affair, with another five matches in Pakistan – albeit featuring a Black Caps team missing Indian Premier League players – to follow in April.

Like this team combo all top 5 batters can actually bat.
Going forward we can add haris if azam is too much trouble in the field and we ll have naseem and zaman as pacers too.
I hope team shapes up well for this wc and we actually win smth

Shaheen Haris Abbas Naseem Jamal Wasim Zaman. Pace battery suddenly looks eay better as the format gets shorter for Pakistan

Azam has to be keeper, there is no point letting him field. He needs to put some good show with the bat, won't get enough chances.

He will surely be keeping the wickets. That is the only place he should be on. The outfield show will end horribly for him. Rizwan is a gun fielder so he will be out on the field in the deep maybe.

I'm frustrated that Sahibzada Farhan isn't playing today, and I'm puzzled about the criteria for choosing Azam Khan over him. What was Azam Khan's performance in the National T20 Cup 2023? Sahibzada Farhan, a top performer in all formats during the domestic season, seems a more fitting choice.

Farhan is more suited for the top-order gig. Azam khan secured his place because of his ability to bat down the order where he bats mostly. I think Farhan can come in for Saim or Babar ( rest him for 2 matches).

Different roles - Farhan is top order batter who can play a long innings. Unlike Azam who is selected as a pinch hitter towards in death overs.

Just LOL at folks calling Azam Khan a power hitter. Yes maybe in T20 circus leauges, but he shouldnt be playing INT cricket. Pathetic that he has been selected.

“Naturally, as we build up to major events, the focus of cricket shifts to the T20 format. Playing against Pakistan is always a fantastic opportunity. They are consistently one of the best teams in the world, in all conditions. So, having them here in our backyard for another contest is great. We had a similar experience before the last T20 World Cup, which was not too long ago. We’re playing in Christchurch, so we’re looking forward to the start of the series as a team.”

2 debutants for Pakistan, Usama Mir, and Abbas Afridi have received their T20i caps from Saeed Ajmal and Umar Gul.

Not sure what you're talking about. Azam has been consistently dominating for quite some time and a selection shouldn't be made on solely one tournament either. Azam has been consistently good in PSL, CPL, other leagues and T20's. He is also a middle order batsmen who gives this team what its missing most, a player with a high SR & six hitter. He is also a middle order batsmen while Farhan is an opener on a squad that has like 5 other openers.

Golden duck for Conway. Shaheen loves getting those wickets in the first over and thank you Saim for not dropping that.

Shaheen back to usual job and that is to take wicket in the first over. Superb start for the skipper.

Pakistan already looking tuned.

The only format where they have an attention span worth talking over.

Pace is still very much the same for Shaheen though. Low to mid 130's.

You wonder if he will ever get to what he was before. He had even breached 150 earlier in his career.

This is the cricket you want to see

Finn Allen v Haris Rauf

Pretty good over from Rauf here. Usually struggles to control the new ball too so this was good to see.

Haris Rauf slower ones always get smashed out of the galaxy.

He always shrinks into his shell and resorts to them in panic. Can see them coming a mile away these days.

Needs to back himself and his pace.

are you watching Allen??????

This is what you call a T20 opener!

tbh i want nz to score a bit. want to see what our batting is made of

Shaheen, is he going to blame speed guns again lol?

Kane is tuk tuk specialist. Horrible in t20s. He should be dropped. No anchoring business. Also azam khan is unfit for international cricket. Sorry but that's my personal opinion. He will be exposed today in the cut throat business of international cricket
