What's new

England v Pakistan | 1st Test | Lord's | Jul 14-18, 2016 | Day 1

If we really didn't have decent openers in the domestic cricket other than Shan and Hafeez, then we should have selected two explosive batsmen as openers, at least they would have given us a blazing start, and would have set a decent platform. Hafeez is still acceptable though.

Shaan.

Then Ball.

Then Hafeez.

As of now.

Hafeez, by some distance.

Bradman has 69 dismissed innings - 23 of them under 23 including 7 ducks & 15 single digit scores & he has only 29+9 = 38 (?) innings over 50. Which means, for someone averaging 100, he is also vulnerable one out of 3 starts, but he made that up once set.

After being dropped & surviving the 1st 80 minutes, the shot he played, would have carried drink in next match with a Captain like Khan.

Pitch looks a belter. Getting baked under the sun. No excuse for Pakistan here.

My god...

What happened to younis technique?

That tells me you have not followed Younis closely at all over the years. That's how he always looks when he first comes to the crease; hopping and jumping; falls across but somehow manages to survive. That's his mantra.

Not to be overly negative than usual. All this dancing that YK is doing is luxury of the flattest pitch in England

I noticed as well. Usually the English are sporting in all stadiums, forget about Lord's. Really surprising.

Hafeez will get a rocket from Mickey Arthur: survived a chance and then fluffed it

Of all, Woakes has 2/12 ........ one of the most improved cricketers, but ........

It's a shame that yk has no idea how to rotate the strike in odi's as opposed to tests

YK has rotated strike well so far and looked busy at the crease, Azhar needs to do the same here.

59/2

I have seen Hafeez get out to that half hearted flick sorta shot. Extremely lazy dismissal and criminal at this level.

Azhar in danger of losing his fluency. Trying too hard to be straight

Azhar is stuck to be honest need a release shot.....as I write this he drives for :four

Yoni bhai has one of the most unorthodox techniques that I have seen. Will give Chanderpaul a run for his money.

But his speciality is that he somehow scores runs, and truckloads of it, with his technique.

He's batting out of his crease as well :))

Please don't get run out.

Vaughan says YK batting as if he's on egg shells. :))

Younis is surviving pretty well here, the shot by Azhar for four shows his maturity as a number 3 in Tests.

YK is one of the most under-rated cricketers. Averaging almost 54 for 9K+ runs with a very balanced stat chart & he is one of the best ever on 4th innings. In fact, I think he averages close to 50 in every innings.

Classic Boycott. Teasing Agnew about his crappy bowling back in the day on TMS :))

This session is meandering towards lunch.

Hafeez cant play anything that swings or seams.

He is supreme if the track is flat.

He's not that bad how people make him out to be. His technique may not be the best but he has been our best opener in recent times.

Always a pleasure to watch Younis chickening against pace.

I am told that he is Pakistan's greatest ever Test batsman, well that certainly makes me disappointed.

20 minutes solid batting needed here, england session so far having taken 2 wickets!

I think some point last year, he averaged 50 in all four innings when he pushed his 3rd innings one to 50 as well.

The only argument probably is his average against pacers outside Asia but in the grand scheme of things its negligible.

Thats because we havent toured in any country since he last played Dale Steyn in tests.

He is an good to okayish ODI batsmen but if the test is not in Asia and the pitch is not flat he will be found out.

You will see when the series shifts to pitches that have some more juice than this flat Lords track.

All the more baffling because he's a decent puller of the ball. That shot is reminiscent of Nasir Jamshed in WC2015.

I find him to be a lot better than our other Test openers such as Manzoor and Shan himself.
