England 6/0 after India replied with 273.

Game is close, with England slightly favored according to the bookies. A couple of English wickets and the pendulum would swing back towards the Indians.
 
Ashwin won't have the advantage Moeen has while bowling.

The rough patch on the pitch is outside off stump to right handers but outside leg stump to left handers. With 7 English batsmen, Ashwin won't be able to pitch it on the rough like Moeen could.

Still, he needs to pick up at least 4 quick wickets this innings if India has to win this test match.


Kohli played a poor innings and he would know it. If I know Kohli, he is going to come back harder and even more determined to play a solid innings. So I'm expecting Kohli to score big in the 4th innings.
 
The sight of Indian batsmen giving wickets to Moeen Ali has left India spinner Harbhajan Singh unimpressed. Harbhajan, part of the commentary panel, sat comfortably as he watched India make steady progress before they imploded, and was left surprised watching the side slip from the comfort of 142/2, to reach 195/8, with Ali picking up four of those wickets.

In an interview with Times of India, Harbhajan rued the dismissal of India’s batsmen, pointing out that he was expecting better from them.

“It’s sad the way our guys are giving away these wickets. They should have done better than this,” Harbhajan said during the post-tea session. “Those were really poor shots by Ashwin and Pandya. Not just me, they themselves would be disappointed with the shots they have played. If they had given themselves a bit more time, things would have been far easier.”

Harbhajan had a point. India had lost Rishabh Pant for 0 after the batsman had endured 29 painstaking deliveries. Once he left, Hardik Pandya walked down to Ali and dragged the ball to give Joe Root a simple catch at short-mid wicket. Two overs later, R Ashwin fell to an even horrible shot, against the run of play, attempting a reverse sweep, as the ball rolled back onto his stumps.

It was almost as of Ali had turned the clock back to 2014, where he picked up 6/67 against the same opponent at the same venue. He went on to remove Ishant Sharma after a dogged stand between him and Cheteshwar Pujara for his fifth of the innings.

When Ali was called back to the England side for the fourth Test, it would have hardly been any surprise as to who would cause India the most problems with the ball. After frustrating India with a potentially game-turning partnership with Curran on Day 1, Ali celebrated his return to the England team with five wickets, nearly polishing off India’s lower order in the process.

After a disappointing tour of Australia and New Zealand, where Moeen reached the landmark of 50 Test matches, he was dropped for the home series against Pakistan, while legspinner Adil Rashid was picked over him for the first three Tests against India. The allrounder, however, fought his way back with strong performances in county cricket which included a double century and eight wickets in a single game for Worcestershire.

“He varied the pace beautifully and made the batsmen play all the time. The fact that there was a bit of rough outside the off-stump created by Ishant’s footmarks helped his case as well,” Harbhajan said.

The last time India visited England, Ali had taken 19 wickets against them, and crucial ones at that. This time, save for Pujara and Jasprit Bumrah’s defiance, England were looking at an important advantage in the Test match.

This could be a really exciting match now. England probably have the edge at the moment but that can change very quickly.
 
Bumrah and Ishant gave valuable company to Pujara and helped India get to a decent total. Now the burden has fallen back on th Indian bowlers to carry this fragile Indian batting. They have to get England all out below 150 to stand a chance of winning the test.

This guy better replicate Moeen ---> :ashwin
 
Quite simple now. England need a good lead, roughly 250 and they win. The batsmen have largely been terrible this series, with Kohli somewhat rising above the rest, with some bright spots from Buttler, Curran and now Pujara but other than that, a poor, poor series in mainly hot, sunny conditions with relatively flat pitches.
 
England will win easily unless they collapse under 150. India hasn't chased 200 in SENA in last 30 years.
 
To me what matters more than the actual target
is the remaining runs left to win when Kohli gets out in 4th inning. If that number is more than 60-65, then I don't expect our famed batting lineup to chase that, even if we have 7 wickets left. Indian team looks very different once Kohli gets out - boundaries dry up, strike rotation ceases, and all of a sudden bowling looks much better.
 
Moeen in at 3 is bizarre.

Unlikely to be crazy enough to work.

Excellent field placement from Kohli...fair combination of heavy slips + defensive leg side..no freebie fours even if bowlers falter on the leg side, all Indian bolwers do baring bumrah.

That was harsh on Ishant. I've seen Wahab go all over the red zone and be given unofficial warnings.

And analysis when you ridicule someone and person makes you look stupid in next 10 mins means a lot, right?

What is it with the entitled mentality of certain Indian supporters here ? It's positively sordid.

India are in a great position here, but it seems certain posters project their own insecurities into rabid criticism for Kohli. Kohli is who he is, he's not going to change the way he captains and suddenly become a cool, detached, insouciant leader in the Brearley mold.

When we have time to dissect his tactics in a detailed manner, we will do.

You have to understand the difference between tactics and leadership.

Kohli has good team and is an inspiring leader.

But he is a God awful tactician.

If you think 22 wins in 38 matches is enough to show his tactical brilliance, good for you.

Wahab always gets warned for it, he's even been taken out of the attack a few times.

Jimmy Anderson on the other hand, runs all over the danger zone and never ever gets spoken to.
 
Holding thinks Bumrah will have a short career. Very injury prone action.

If he doesn't drop sitters he should be kept. Dropping 5 catches is much more lethal than losing an early wicket. You can make up for runs, but it's much harder to make up for lost wickets.
 
So Jimmy was not warned for running in the danger area but ishant is given 2 official warnings. And people still think BCCI control the sport. :)

Yeah I know. Just making the observation Wahab does get a lot of warning about it. Ishant didn't and he didn't even cross it that much.
 
India's antagonist-in-chief Michael Holding pointing out the inconsistent treatment meted out to Sharma this morning and the blind eye turned towards Anderson when he runs on to the pitch. Of course, Holding must be looking for an IPL contract.

Ishant had an unofficial warning or two in the first innings as well iirc.

The double standard is not between Ishant and Wahab, but Wahab/Ishant and someone like Anderson.
 
Lead is just 24, this wicket needs to add another 75 odd to make the Indians nervous

How hard is it to understand a simple conversation.

Someone mentioned that Kohli had won 22 games out of 38 when I talked about Kohli's tactics.
For which I responded that Kohli is a good leader but poor tactician.

5 minutes later, Kohli proves it.

The term "tactical genius" is obviously an exaggeration to make a point.

Gosh, one post and 10 clarifications for it.
 
This is still a very good batting wicket, reckon England need a minimum lead of 250 to be considered favourites.

You can be a good captain without being a tactical genius. Not sure what your problem is.

England needs just 150 more to win this match. With their batting depth it should come easily. In fact, I think India were never set to win when Curran had an 80 and 60 run partnership with Ali and Broad in the 1st innings. India's lead in 2nd innings was pretty insignificant, it's always much harder to score in 4th innings.

He scored 36, good thing your captain isn't a pusillanimous wrist slitter. India should back themselves to score anything under 250 on this wicket.

His problem is that he thinks that he's a better leader, better tactitician and god gift to earth strategist. I am hoping he's under 16 and will replace Kohli soon as Indian team captain. Can't wait!

He has been very poor in spell 2.

Kohli shouldn't hav removed him when he looked threatening in spell 1.

If he cant perform here, then send him back to India.

Cricket is about winning crucial moments and Ashwin is yet to win a game for his country in SENA.

I've just checked his record and far from winning a match, he's taken 41 wickets in 15 test matches in Australia, England, and South Africa at a staggering average of 45. He has never taken a 5-wicket haul either. It's a pretty grim record.

He has 3 4fers.

Played 6 tests in Aus and none in NZ. That will kill stats of any spinner.

This cycle (SA, Eng) he has done very well but if he cant rise up in crucial momemts, then stats are just stats.

Was great in Edgbaston. Team let him down.

Was injured in Trent Bridge.

But today he has to play a role.

Moeen has bowled much better than him uptil now.

It's quite incredible that he has taken 325+ wickets and appears so so ordinary in most countries outside India..infact to left handers his stock delivery seems to be one coming inside..
