After two years of enthralling cricket, the inaugural ICC World Test Championship Final is upon us and fittingly it pits the two top teams on the ICC Test rankings against one another.

OVERVIEW:

India vs New Zealand at Southampton
ICC World Test Championship Final
10:30am local, 3pm IST, 9:30pm NZST

After two years of enthralling cricket, the inaugural ICC World Test Championship Final is upon and fittingly it pits the two top teams on the ICC Test rankings against one another.

New Zealand, recently minted the No.1 Test team in the world on the rankings, take on an Indian side that has been close to a fixture there for the past five years.

In one match we are likely to see five of the top batters on the men’s rankings, three of top 10 bowlers and up to four of the top 10 all-rounders.

You would be hard-pressed to argue there were two more fitting sides to play in this historic match at Southampton’s Hampshire bowl.

Before the first ball is delivered on Friday at 10:30am local, find out everything you need to know.

HOW THEY GOT HERE

India qualified for the World Test Championship Final after finishing first on the standings but their spot in the decider was not secured until their very last match against England.

In terms of points accrued, India led the way for most of the tournament, but their hopes of reaching the final were thrown off-kilter when the percentage-of-points available method was brought into play as a consequence of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Indians began their march in style, winning seven Tests on the trot as they dealt out defeats to the West Indies, South Africa and Bangladesh. Their campaign hit a serious hurdle against eventual Final opponents New Zealand as they suffered back to back defeats.

In Australia, things were looking grim after a crushing loss at Adelaide Oval, but eventually, a 2-1 win restored their hopes. There was another setback when they tasted defeat in the opening Test against England, but they'd rally to win that series 3-1 and ultimately take the top spot on the WTC standings.

New Zealand started their WTC campaign on the backfoot, suffering defeat against Sri Lanka in their first Test of the tournament but went on to draw the series 1-1. A 3-0 loss to Australia in 2019-20 badly hurt their ambitions before a 2-0 victory over India lifted spirits.

They were further emboldened when the decision was made to decide standings on percentage rather than points, and a run of four straight wins at home was enough to lift them to second.

Along the way, they also won two of their four Tests - home and away - against England in series that had no bearing on the WTC.

WHAT’S UP FOR GRABS

The ICC Test Championship Mace, which has been traditionally held by the No.1 team in Test cricket will go to the winner of this week’s final.

The winner will also be awarded a purse of $1.6 million, with the runner-up collecting $800,000. In the result of a draw, the prize money for first and second will be split between the two sides and the Mace shared.

SQUADS

India

E4Fus8aVgAgz8Tz

New Zealand Playing XI :
Tom Latham, Devon Conway, Kane Williamson (capt), Ross Taylor, Henry Nicholls, BJ Watling (wk), Colin de Grandhomme, Kyle Jamieson, Tim Southee, Neil Wagner, Trent Boult.

New Zealand have selection headaches of their own after building serious depth.

After missing the second Test against England – a match his Black Caps won – captain Williamson is set to return from an elbow injury at No.3 behind a likely pair of Tom Latham and Devon Conway, who will be making his WTC debut. Veteran Ross Taylor and the reliable Henry Nicholls can be expected to round out the top five.

Having missed the second Test against England with a back complaint, wicket-keeper BJ Watling looks set to return to the XI at either No.6 or 7.

The Black Caps could play seam-bowling all-rounder Colin de Grandhomme at No.6 with the keeper a spot down. That would leave them having to pick between going for an all-out pace attack or leaving out two of Tim Southee, Trent Boult, Neil Wagner, Kyle Jamieson, Matt Henry to fit spinner Ajaz Patel.

Alternatively, they could opt to push Jamieson up to seven, allowing them to play spinner Patel alongside three of Southee, Boult, Wagner and Henry.

It’s worth remembering in all this that Will Young scored 82 in the last Test, where Henry was Player of the Match for his six wickets.

REMEMBER THE LAST TIME

The last time these two teams met, New Zealand won 2-0 at home. The last time they met at an ICC event, the Black Caps knocked India out in the semi-finals of the 2019 Cricket World Cup. In fact, the last time India beat New Zealand at a men’s ICC event was in the 2003 Cricket World Cup.

Conversely, New Zealand are looking to win their first men’s ICC final since the 2000 ICC KnockOut, having finished runner up at the 2019 and 2015 Cricket World Cup and 2009 Champions Trophy.

Suffice to say, both teams are looking to put to bed some bad omens.

At the end of the day, these are two quality teams that have each only lost one series in the WTC cycle and the match will be decided across the five days' play rather than being determined by any history.

LOOK OUT FOR

Where else to look but the two star captains – Virat Kohli and Kane Williamson. Fourth and second on the ICC Test battings respectively, Kohli and Williamson are firmly cemented among the greatest batters of their generations.

Williamson goes into the match looking to shake off an elbow injury and a quiet start to his tour of England but placed firmly as the man India will be most desperate to keep quiet. His own surge in form fuelled the Black Caps’ charge to the final, scoring 639 runs at 159.75 across three Tests in 2020/21, with two double centuries and a ton.

Kohli heads into the match looking to notch his first century in the format since 2019 and leave an indelible mark on. While it has been a somewhat lean run for the Indian captain, he has come up with several key performances for the team in that time.

In Australia, his half-century at Adelaide Oval looked set to shape the match until an unfortunate run out, while against England his 62 at Chennai was crucial to turning the series around. He averaged 59.3 and scored two centuries on his last Test tour of England and will be hoping that bodes well going into the final.

As captains, both Williamson and Kohli are proponents of attacking, positive cricket and we can expect both to push for victory rather than play for a draw.

WHERE TO WATCH

Head here for a comprehensive wrap up where to watch it in your home country.

The TV broadcast plans are headlined by Star Sports, providing the Indian fans options between five languages: Hindi, English, Tamil, Telugu, and Kannada. The fans from India will be able to digitally stream the match on Disney+ Hotstar. The final in Nepal, Maldives, Bhutan, and Sri Lanka will also be broadcasted by Star Sports.

In other countries in Asia: Gazi TV in Bangladesh, RTA Sport in Afghanistan, and Etisalat - CricLife in UAE will broadcast the match live on TV.

The ICC has also partnered up Sky Sports in New Zealand, Fox Sports in Australia, Supersport in Sub-Saharan Africa, and Sky Sports in the UK for live telecast. Fans in the US and Canada have an array of options, via Hotstar and Willow TV with ESPN+ exclusively for the US while Flow Sports will broadcast in the Caribbean.

Wonder why we named playing 11 squad about 24 hours in advance....
surely gives a chance for the opposition to plan their team better...
I just hope and pray we donot do a Lords 2018 where we saw there was rain, named team 24 hours prior , had kuldeep , it rained out on the first day and we lost massively.
Yes, our selection was to be blamed but we also played cr$p.
Hoping our guys fire this time ...
looking at the weather forecast - its rainy and gloomy
and when its overcast swing and seam conditions and green mamba wickets, our guys cant even tie their shoe laces straight - have no confidence in our openers at all....the middle order will have to put in a massive shift and do most of the spade work...
i'd still back our bowlers to get 20 irrespective of where ever they play.
Go Indiaaaaaaaa!:hasan2

Looks like Rain is going to play spoil sport. Will be quite a dissappointing end to the WTC is this ends in a washout. I mean majority of days in washout.

Considering there will be a 6th reserve day, I think we should get at least 3 days of play .
It will be enough time for new Zealand to win by an innings

Somehow there seems to be less excitement for this! Such a huge match though! Probably it is because of the match up (Ind vs NZ... It can go too one-sided! One team can take over the other team easily! Toss & Conditions will play huge role!)

Forecast is getting worse for rest of the days too I'm afraid.

0.5 more ICC trophy to be added to India's Arsenal in a week. :91:

Do you guys realize, it is possible for the WTC Final to end before a league game of WTC (between RSA and WI) 😂😂

Only ICC is capable of such legendary stuff 😂😂

The ICC should've known the English condition and after what happened in the first stage of 2019 World Cup, there wasn't any necessity to go with England again for WTC final. It just irritates everyone when you wait for months and then rain spoils the event.

Oh my... :)))

Why didn't I realize that? So we have a league game and a final played parallel to each other. What a farce! Thank you ICC. :91:

Original schedule was supposed to finish the tour before WTC finals but due to Covid many things has been changed.

Cant blame ICC.

Is this the first ever test match played in Neutral Venue for both teams? (Not considering virtual homes like Pakistan in UAE).

If this match turns out to be interesting, then ICC can plan to have a triangular test series (like we had in ODIs before!) Like Australia & England come to India and there can be a test match between Australia & England in India. India & Pakistan come to England and we can have a match between India and Pakistan! That will be some kind of true-test (taking away home advantage!)

Whose bright idea was it to hold this in England anyway?

Is this the first ever test match played in Neutral Venue for both teams? (Not considering virtual homes like Pakistan in UAE).

Pakistan v Australia has been held in England in 2010. Also in Sri Lanka in 2002.

There may be other instances.

That's good. We have 2 world cups, 1 world T20 and 1.5 CT's in the bag. With this 0.5 , we'll have 5 icc trophies:)

There will be no play in the first session of Day 1 - that's the official update from bcci.

Day 1: Toss delayed due to rain

144 years wait for this match..and we had to have this match in England.

Rain expected on all 5 days, of all the places this match could have been held but they had to go with England. Well done ICC.

Not like I expected it to be any different but the most "important" match in the world halted by rain

So there's a league match being played of this championship on the same day as the final. ICC cant get any better than this.

The weather has been amazing in the past week or so, bad luck :))

There is no rain in woman's match...which is in progress now..and here in rosebowl its rain...feel very sad

If met forecast suggests appalling weather in Southampton next few days should ICC defer WTC by some days? India v Eng series doesn’t start till Aug 4, NZ have no immediate intnl commitments either. Radical move & logistical nightmare but will ensure a final.

I went to the Edgbaston Test for day 1 and thankfully there was no rain and it was acc scorching hot by the end of the day.

Whose bright idea was it to hold this in England anyway?
Have been saying this for a while now. What's so special in England for WTC final to be held here when it's not even in the finals?

Bro, it can rain anywhere no? It has nothing to do with England...its one of the best place to play cricket.

Agreed. Most test series of the last few years have ended in results, so this whole hubbub around rain is nonsensical. I'd prefer cricket in England ,rain or not to a 2 day spin fest in other places.

The sad part is, the beautiful start to late May, early June has resulted in so much rain for the next few days but then beautiful weather remainder of June.

I like the bowling India have put forward, Shami is world class, Bumrah can take wickets for not many and Sharma has the height and bounce and is greatly improved. Now I am sure Kohli will not open, maybe a quirk or how it was listed on twitter, but that batting is a bit up and down for me. In English conditions more experienced batsmen have shown to be toothless, I am curious how guys like Gill and Rahane will handle it.

I am sure they will have to go up against Boult, Southee, Jamieson and Wagner. Imagine Jamieson, first thing tomorrow, it's a bit cool, a bit damp, new ball...India msut win the toss and they must bowl first! I actually think if it stays damp throughout then the spinners will have some help in this pitch.

At this rate even with the reserve day probably the only chance of getting a result.

ICC will not bother. Flexibility is blasphemy.

Weather forecast is good next week. Cant ICC shift the test match to next week since both Ind and NZ will be free?

If this match is a draw, we have to determine winner on the basis of which team scored more boundaries in this WTC cycle. Only that would be fair. :)

The rain has saved India. Not sure why Indian fans are moaning.

In theory - good suggestion. Practically they are talking millions in sponsors, air time, logistics....and on top you have the virus situation...
lets just hope the reserve 6th day comes in handy..

This looks very bad, however English grounds, particularly this one in Southampton have world class drainage facilities, as long as the rain stops it wont take them that long to clear the field and get it dried up. If i was india i would hope the day gets called off comeback tomorrow and hope the sun shines, wouldn't want to face NZ seamers in these conditions especially if it remains overcast.

Just feel our guys were jumpy in announcing the XI a day before even the first day
-does this advantage the oppositon?
they havent named theirs at all... and looking at the rainy overcast conditions- cant trust our guys to walk straight leave alone bat and grind out the oppo...facing Boult and co will be super slippery
no confidence in Gill at all....i donot think he has the game to prosper in eng conditions - KL would have been a better bet, at least he is better at tonking spin - assuming nz play mumbai patel
all in all - should be a intresting match...

What about determine the winner on the basis of winning away series in this WTC cycle.

Should have kept the match at Lord's like it was originally intended. Southampton is notorious for rain during this time of the year...everybody knows that.

ICC can never be visionary like BCCI who shifted IPL second phase from India to UAE because of rain. ( hope people understand actual context here )

Bucketing down in North London...
Probably as bad or even worse than in Southampton.

The umpires have been out to have a look at the ground here in Southampton. They are going to have another inspection at 3pm. Still pretty wet and rain is foreacast but it has been dry for a while

Why they don't cover ground completely?
is there any shortage of covers?

Its not a big deal right.

Evenly matched day one. Both sides are neck and neck and still in the game.

Unfortunately, play on Day 1 has been called off due to rains. 10.30 AM local time start tomorrow.

Rain wiped out the entire first day of the men's World Test Championship final between India and New Zealand in Southampton.

Heavy rain fell throughout Friday, preventing a ball being bowled, and play was abandoned at 14:48 BST.

The weather is forecast to improve over the weekend with play set to begin at 10:30 on Saturday.

A reserve, sixth day is in place for the showpiece final to allow for play lost to bad weather to be made up.

India and New Zealand are contesting the inaugural final with the winner crowned the first Test world champions in cricket's history.

If the match is drawn the sides will be joint winners.

Indian fielding coach R Sridhar (in Pres) said "Toss has not taken place, if the decision on playing X1 has to be taken, we will take that into the consideration".

The reserve day or sixth day officially came into effect half an hour into the second session i.e 6:40 pm IST. The two and half hours of play will be made up in the course of the next five days with 30 minutes of an early start on each day.
The World Test Championship final between India and New Zealand hit a rain roadblock even before the toss could take place at the Ageas Bowl in Southampton on Friday. Continuous rain since Thursday evening meant the first days of the WTC final was washed out.

There was no rain in Southampton since 5:30 pm IST but the match officials after preliminary inspection, decided to call off the play around 7:20 pm IST.

How will ICC compensate for the loss of time due to a rain washout on Day 1? Well, as long as the rain stays away for the next five days, there really shouldn’t be any worries at all. In fact, not a single over of play has been lost yet as there is a reserve day (June 23) in place to make up the overs and time.

The reserve day or sixth day officially came into effect half an hour into the second session i.e 6:40 pm IST. The two and half hours of play will be made up in the course of the next five days with 30 minutes of an early start on each day.
