The first Test between England and India on 4 August at Trent Bridge will mark the beginning of the 2023 ICC World Test Championship cycle.

Overview:

England v India, first Test
Trent Bridge, Nottingham
4 August, 11:00 Local

India have had to deal with injury woes yet again on the England tour with Mayank Agarwal out of the first Test due to a concussion. Shubman Gill, Washington Sundar, and Avesh Khan are already ruled out of the whole series. However, Prithvi Shaw and Suryakumar Yadav are flying to England as replacements will give the visitors options for the second Test.

Rohit Sharma is now likely to open with KL Rahul, who has proved a strong contender after a hundred in the practice game against County Select XI. It also remains to be seen whether India will go in with two frontline spinners or think about adding a fourth pacer with the conditions in England favouring the seamers.

England, on the other hand, have a void to fill in the absence of Ben Stokes, who brought balance to the side. Sam Curran is the leading man in Stokes’ absence who can offer the same set of skills with the bat and ball. The hosts will also be without the services of Jofra Archer, who is recovering from an elbow surgery.

The wicket at Trent Bridge looks bowler-friendly with plenty of grass and with both teams rich in pace options, it might be a tightly-fought contest.

Remember the last time:

The two sides went head-to-head in a four-match Test series hosted by India in February this year. In the final Test, India dominated England with a comprehensive win by an innings and 25 runs, thus taking the series 3-1.

England batting first, posted 205 with Ben Stokes scoring the only fifty in the first innings. India then went on to post a lead of 160 with the help of Rishabh Pant’s 101 and Washington Sundar’s unbeaten 96* which proved more than enough for the visitors.

In England’s second innings, Axar Patel and Ravichandran Ashwin spun the web around the visitors as both took five wickets each. England were bowled out for 135 with Dan Lawrence scoring the highest – 50 off 95 balls.

What they said:

Joe Root (England captain): “It will be nice to start strongly from a personal point of view. I know if I go out there and score big runs, it gives us opportunities to win the game and those things look after themselves. But Test cricket is not about you, you as an individual. It’s about winning for England and that contributes something bigger than yourself. That’s the mindset going into this series. Hopefully, we can outplay India.”

Ajinkya Rahane (India vice-captain): “Playing away from home is always a challenge. It’s all about putting our best foot forward and getting used to the conditions quickly. I thought in 2018 we played very good cricket but the result didn’t go our way. This is the World Test Championship and so, every Test counts. Rather than focusing on the series, we will focus on one game at a time.”

Squads:

England Squad : Rory Burns, Dominic Sibley, Zak Crawley, Joe Root(c), Jonny Bairstow, Daniel Lawrence, Jos Buttler(w), Ollie Robinson, Mark Wood, Stuart Broad, James Anderson, Craig Overton, Sam Curran, Jack Leach, Dominic Bess, Ollie Pope, Haseeb Hameed

India Squad : Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli(c), Ajinkya Rahane, Rishabh Pant(w), Ravichandran Ashwin, Shardul Thakur, Ishant Sharma, Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah, Ravindra Jadeja, Mohammed Siraj, Axar Patel, Wriddhiman Saha, Umesh Yadav, Hanuma Vihari, Abhimanyu Easwaran

India will win toss then elect to bat. The first day will belong to India, they will be on top by the end of play scoring plenty of runs. England will make a comeback on day two nevertheless India will have the advantage throughout the match. On the last day England will again regroup attempting to make a comeback before India strikes decisive blows to win a close encounter. Lets see if this prediction based on a dream I had some hours back is true or not!:)) If true I will declare myself gifted and psychic:shh

Sunil Gavaskar expects India to win the series either 4-0 or 3-1

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar also predicted the outcome of upcoming India vs England five-match Test series. The legendary cricketer batted for an India win by a 4-0 or 3-1 margin, depending on the weather, adding that the visitors would emerge victorious anyway as England is depleted and their batting brittle.

Just to reiterate, even I predicted India will win 3-1 in the prediction thread. Good to see Sunny bhai agrees with me

Lets do it boys...lets go Team India

:srini

Not to spoil the party here, but it can turn ugly for India if it bats today. Just being realistic here.

Sunil Gavaskar is very arrogant.
He predicted india will win against New Zealand easily in the world championship final but New Zealand showed India's real place

Same thing is gonna happen here.India is going to get decimated.Even England's C team will show them their real place.

Not every team is equivalent to Pakistan.

This Ind-Eng series has probably had the least build up/hype leading up to the opening day. Not sure why.. Maybe it's the olympics.

Definately due to Olympics .there is also women hockey semifinal today same time as 1st day starting at 3:30PM. Most of people's will watch women semi rather than this match.

Why?
Actually day 1 is bit better compared to other days.
It is very likely that it would rain, showers and overcast conditions on all five days of the match. The days that would be most affected would be days 2, 3, and 4.

Trent Bridge has been a good venue for India
1996 - Draw
2002 - Draw
2007 - Won
2011 - Lost
2014 - Draw
2018 - Won

Only one loss and two wins, three draws in last 60 years

Alastair Cook, who's an expert with Sony, says it's going to be extremely tricky at the toss. The pitch looks green and the overhead conditions are nice and bright.

I think we should play with 6 bat + Pant + 4 bowlers. Go safe in 1st game.

Rahul
Rohit
Pujara
Kohli
Rahane
Vihari
Pant
Ashwin
Siraj
Shami
Bumrah

Mike Holding is saying 10mm of grass and its a bowling paradise.

Eng taking revenge of the spin mamba we served to them in India.

Think its fair...no complains :))

Looking forward to a good test match here. I reckon it will be evenly poised but India should edge it.

Exactly. No touring team has any business complaining about the pitches provided to them. There's a certain thing called home advantage.

Your seamers are probably better than Englands at the moment.

Is there a bigger panauti than this guy?

Lost 6 tosses in a row now vs England in England.

Brother King_Kohli should change his username to king_Panauti to match with the guy in his dp.

Correct team picked. This pitch is not a wicket for the spinners and they have gone with Jadeja as he offers batting.

It's beyond absurd how Crawley and bairstow have been picked.
I guess they really want Crawley to play in the ashes.

India should not have left out ashwin, otherwise the rest of their selections are fine

Annnd England have chosen to bat first :))

Never thought would say this but bit of a defensive selection of Jadeja from Virat and Shastri . Pick 5 bowlers.
Ishant for Bumrah
Ashwin for Jadeja.
But lets hope for the best.

England have won the toss and have opted to bat

India (Playing XI): Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli(c), Ajinkya Rahane, Rishabh Pant(w), Ravindra Jadeja, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj

England (Playing XI): Rory Burns, Dominic Sibley, Zak Crawley, Joe Root(c), Jonny Bairstow, Daniel Lawrence, Jos Buttler(w), Sam Curran, Ollie Robinson, Stuart Broad, James Anderson

You guys have missed a great wrestling match in the olympics - Ravi Kumar's comeback victory in the semifinals.

You also predicted that India will win the WTC final. :inti

England team is looking weak without Ben Stokes. Perfect opportunity for India to win this series. :inti

Jadeja needs to score runs to justify his selection.
Ashwin outbowled jadeja in the wtc by alot

Bumrah has done zilch in recent past to get selected in the playing XI.
Ashwin is miles ahead of Jadeja at the moment, yet not selected.

Lost the toss as usual. Everything happening as expected.

I have a feeling Ollie Robinson is going to play a huge role in this series.

Might be the Kyle Jamieson of England.

And Bumrah strikes :))

I don't know what England were thinking when they decided to bat first!

See this is what happens when players like Bumrah don't injure themselves in IPL before an important series like this. :inti

Disgraceful TV coverage of this game by SONY. Ads are shown after 4 deliveries of the over.

Amazing start from Bumrah and Shami.

This English batting lineup is on par with the Pakistani batting lineup. So mediocre.

Indian bowlers should have no problem wrapping this weak England batting today. I don't think Ashwin's bowling will be missed in this test. :inti

People that haven't followed English cricket closely over the last two years significantly underestimate the ineptitude of their batting. This isn't the same quality of team that won the series in 2018. If India don't win this series, it'll be a shock for me.

Pity about the weather forecast for this test though.

But indian batting in England condition is even worse then England .

This.

Those who don't know anything about the ineptitude of our batting say that we'll win this series.

I think England also shouldn't have any problem wrapping this weak indian batting tomorrow, we are playing without our next superstar Shubman Gill and his replacement Mayank too. :inti

India's batting lineup isn't great either. Other than Kohli, Pant the rest are all hit-or-miss.
Hence it's puzzling why England decide to bat first.

Spoilt for choice -finals in wrestling, high jump is on, and 1-0 to indian women in hockey and 0-1 in the cricket yoohoo....Go Indiaaaa!

I don't get how Jennings, Denly, Washed up Cook is better than Burns, SIbley, Crawley.
Rest all are same except Stokes who didn't do much even last time. Also the same English team beat Pakistan who are usually very good in England

So this is our best chance to register a customary test win in England!

Burns, Sibley, Crawley, Lawrence. Who are these guys? Is it full England side or the Lion team?

Gill? You are looking desperate now? :))) India is playing a full strength team. :inti

Bumrah is bowling with old action...good to see. Just hope he maintains this stuff atleast till T20 WC.

The bowler I'm most excited about is Siraj in english conditions with the Duke ball.
