Great to see Hameed opening the batting with Cook - really down to earth, well spoken lad and had a great first class season for Lanc's - bright future ahead.

Ansari retaining his place is a big boost too for his confidence, with Rashid in the squad i think he will miss out though.

My Ideal XII for ENG would be:

Cook
Hameed
Root
Duckett
Stokes
Bairstow (i would have picked Jos, but i know he already has missed out)
Ali
Batty * Replacing Woakes as this pitch would be useless to play 4 seamers on.
Rashid
Anderson
Broad

India XII:
Vijay
Gambhir
Rahane
Kohli
Pujara
Saha
Jadeja
Ashwin
Mishra
Umesh Yadav
Shami

Goodluck to both teams, i think India will win comfortably i feel. :srt

You would've picked Buttler over Bairstow who is among England's top 3 test batsmen??

I just feel they don't need a bairstow, they need a buttler for this series.. someone with the ability to change gears quickly, also puts the pressure off stokes to do so - allowing him to settle and play his game before tee-ing off.

For Haseeb Hameed, this is like home ground it seems reports cricinfo. His family hails from Gujarat India. His elder brother got married in Gujarat it seems.

I hope our bowlers don't make it too welcoming for him.

India going with spray ball machine Yadav. He has a knack of going at over 4rpo even in helpful conditions.

3 spinners were enough to bundle out England. Don't understand the point of 2 seamers. Indian batting looks weak on paper. Hoping Ashwin performs with bat too. Otherwise India can get into trouble.

Will be interesting match Pujara,Rahane,Vijay have to stay in the crease.

Going to be a close match I guess. Batting 2nd won't be easy here; but more importantly, I think batting in first 4 sessions is definitely an advantage. ENG might blow the good toss by being too cautious, but I believe, this is wicket where you score big & fast on 1st 4 sessions.

Bad decision to omit Batty.

We still should do okay - we bowl fourth - but I would have liked our spinner with the most control.

India playing 5 batters and England playing 10. #koitobachao

True, that's a big concern. Normally, if you play less batsmen, it doesn't hurt you much if you can bat first. In fact, it's an advantage, if you can put 450 on 1st innings. But, if ENG puts 400 here, IND will be in trouble with that length of tail.

Cook dropped, might cost IND big time here.

Think the amount of right handers India have is what made the difference.

Cook getting dropped first over brings back bad memories for me.

First over at the Rose bowl. Cook gives an edge but Jadeja drops a sitter. That is when everything started to go haywire for India in that series. India were thumped in that match and the 2 matches thereafter.

I hope Cook doesn't make big here, already dropped second time.

Can you recall, I picked exactly this attack during the 2nd Test at Dhaka. 3 spinners & 3 pacers. Batty should have come instead ofAnsari, but there are 9 right handers in Indian line-up, therefore I think Adil/Ansari makes sense.

Interesting approach this from Hameed. Normally a very conservative batsman.

Probably Bayliss wanted him to make some quick runs from the pacers.

Man, I need the cricket to cheer me up after watching BBC election coverage all night

Couple of regulation drops - I guess, IND also rotates their cordon too much. 1st, 2nd Slip, gully & short-leg are specialist spots; need to build 4 specialist there.

Both openers dropped in the space of the first 6 overs :))

Out of all 22 players in this match, 21 of them has a FC century - what a game.

It's a massive ask of a 19 year old to make his Test debut in India

But generally england players to debut in india often end up being the goods

From now on, I'll keep a score of dropped catches so that I can develop my own system to calculate Umesh's bowling average. :amir

Pitch already flattened out. No more assistance for pacers. Disastrous start for India.

Don't see any help for spinners in Day1. Hardwork for Indian bowlers.

I wouldn't be surprised if Modi's currency bomb yesterday has given some players sleepless night.

Don't worry. Our fielders will make sure this Haseeb guy scores at least a 50.

No turn and slow pitch.

India will get a phainty here. Had many opportunities but choked.

No turn? Guess Ashwin and Jadeja are going to get quite a phainty.

England will like this pitch much better than what they got in Bangladesh.

It was a very good toss to win for England, India will have to be at their very best to win here. Pitch looks benign with not many tricks, best time to bat. India earlier beat teams even after batting second but they didn't have the batting depth of England. England can pile on the score here and if they get to 400, they have every chance of winning this. First things first though, India could do with holding onto their catches.

Hameed with the wily veteran move there, saving the reviews for himself.

Great bowling on a batta. England should have been 3 down by now.
