What's new

India v England | 2nd Test | Visakhapatnam | Nov 17-21, 2016 | Day 1

Babar and Haris can potentially compete with these Indian batsmen, but they are well ahead of Azhar, Shafiq, Younis, Misbah and Sarfraz.

Our batsmen are plodders, technically all over the place terrible to watch.

Indian batsmen are so good to watch in comparison. This is what a good cricketing setup with qualified coaches do to you.

Azhar has really improved and is easily the most compact batsman we have. He looks like a proper batsman even if he doesn't time the ball as well as some of these guys or doesn't have as many shots. You are right that if anyone can become as good its Babar and Haris

Azhar is comfortably our best batsman at the moment.

Chief Destroyer I know pujara just got a ton but is there a case for him batting at 5 and Rahane at 3. I just feel Rahanes too good a player to not be in the top 4.

Pujara's record is absolutely bonkers at number 3 in Asia.

Rahane at number 3 ain't gonna be a patch to Pujara in Asia with the turning ball. The amount of impact runs Pujara scores in Asia is insane.

Outside Asia, you have a point.

Pujara at 3 is fine. His game isn't suited to number 5.

Pujara is the hardest batsman in the team to dismiss. Even when he is out of form, he consumes a lot of deliveries and shields the middle-order from the new ball.

Rahane on the other hand has the tendency to get out quickly and softly when he is not in the zone, but he is more fluent than Pujara and thus more suited to 5.

Harsh to call Asad a plodder. He's good to watch when he is free flowing.

Pujara has better technique to face new ball outside Asia. He may seem to be struggling outside Asia, but the way he batted for 80 odd balls on a first day track at Lords was praiseworthy. I think its just a matter of time that he starts converting his 30s and 40s to big hundreds.

Kohli starting to have impact in Asian tests now. Not long before he will be an elite test match batsmen

Think he faced more than 80 balls. Around 20 overs iirc..

I hope so...but he does have issues when the ball bounces well.

He seems to survive but not score.

Needs to figure out a way to keep scoring in those conditions.

Pujara :out Pak posters have jinxed him and he is not making those big 100's anymore even in India!

not really uae wickets doesn't allow for shot making, you need batsman like azhar and misbah in the UAE. Look how pak basman played at the oval where the ball came on to the bat nicely they all played shots.

Good innings. He seems to have hit a crazy godlike run of form recently and isn't failing in even a single game.

Hope Rahane gets runs today.

Rahane still needs to improve a lot against spin.

Imagine if we had a batsman who could play pace/swing like Rahane and spin like Pujara.

Rahane is a fine batsmen but I think Kohli will be the better test player. Kohli seems to have more impact in a series and can dominate attack more than Rahane. Also kohli is much better vs spin than Rahane.

Rahane will play a good knock in the series and than some decent support knocks but don't see him dominating a series like Kohli.

India is lucky to have both but overall I'll take Kohli over Rahane.

Lol Botham is such a jinx, he predicted England would win this game and that Rashid would get a lot of wickets.

Pujara has got 3 tons in 3 test matches but doesnt look like getting those daddy hundreds he was known for. Wonder if its more of a fitness issue owing to his knee problems than a temperament issue. Although his runs have been full of impact.

Doesn't matter. His runs have been hugely valuable. Should just keep batting like this and he'll go back to making the really big ones.

I mean I feel the big runs are not coming because of fitness more than because of his temperament.

Ominous signs for England here.

They will have to bat long to get something out of this game.

India's game this one

I had read somewhere that only 3 cricketers (Clarke, Bradman and Ponting) have scored 3+ double hundreds in a calendar year. Kohli has a decent chance of becoming the 4th in this match.

Kohli looks like tiring now. Playing late cut and reverse sweeps.

That lbw was mighty close.... be careful dude :(

He had tried this reverse sweep once before. Was lucky to survive lbw call then too and same now. Dont know why he plays it when he is not good at it.

Kohli's Test 100s:

First 7 100s - 116, 103, 103, 107, 119, 105*, 115
Next 7 100s - 141, 169, 147, 103, 200, 211, 143*

Cook is the only ATG batsman who is still playing, but there are 4-5 young batsmen who can reach that level too by the time they retire.

Then they say that contemporary cricketers are not good enough.

english commies starting to moan that Broad doesnt look fit. here come the excuses

sensible-indian-fan because they start blaming the conditions oh its too tough for a fast bowler on these tracks. Broad probably doesnt want to bowl a short spell at the end of the day and hes just hobbling around to let Cook know im not bowling now. Him and Anderson have done this in the past before when they arent in the mood late in the day. and the commies are like oh they could be injured and they come back the next day bowling fine.

Come on, there have been a lot of - but our main bowlers were injured, excuses in the pasr

A main bowler getting injured/struggling is a valid point to be discussed.

How is that an excuse? If they say they would have done XYZ if Broad was fit, then we can classify it as an excuse depending on what they are saying.

it was a poor knock by rahane England should have taken the new ball earlier might have givin them one more wicket before stumps.

Jimmy against India is like Mithun da against gangsters in those 80's movies.

If they were making statements about conditions being too hard, then yeah I agree with you.

On a related note, those 2 didn't even bother bowling in Oval in 4th innings once the total was too low.

Oh you will see

The ball really swung in Rahane's case.

Really swung and seamed a bit.

Rubbish shot but a brilliant ball nonetheless.

Anderson showing why he is such a class act. Making the ball move around in these conditions. Still England's best bowler even at his age.

Why the hell Cook has fielders on boundaries with 10 balls to go?

Interesting that all 4 wickets have been taken by seamers on this wicket

Form and lack of fitness is temporary, class is permanent - Sir James Anderson.

Ashwin had to survive the day.

Anderson bowls it outside off swinging it.

Pokes at it and sends it through gully.

If he has to be a number 6, he can't do this. Utterly irresponsible shot in a crucial situation. Was lucky.

Anyways played off the day but sums up India's dilemma reg XI.

A great day for India. Rahane's dismissal has turned a day of utter domination into just a great day.

Pakistan got lucky in England. Anderson was hampered .by his shoulder and he was not at his best.

Yes Pakistan played him well, but he was at his usual best either. His pace was down compared to his normal speed and he was bowling within himself.

He got injured at the wrong time; he was in imperious form vs SL earlier in the summer and he would have won England an additional Test if he wouldn't have been troubled by his shoulder.

no they already replaced the Fab 5:)

Its not about that in here.

Its that apart from 5, we are dependent on Ashwin and Saha which is the issue. They are not someone you can bank on safely.

A solid No 6 and No 7 and this lineup would look great.

India needed the day to end now. It was only a matter of time before Ashwin was going to succumb to Anderson in the zone.

That's the problem with Ashwin batting at 6 and why he does not convince me as a Test batsman. I feel that he does not have the skill to resist a top class pacer in form, and this will hurt India especially overseas.

May seem India's day, but tbh, all they had was one partnership. Vijay, Rahul, Rahane all contributed pretty much nothing.

Ashwin seems to be batting one place too high at 6. Could argue that they are already into India's tail, however long it may be, not sure it has the quality to push that Indian score up. The plan was to score 500+, and bat once. From hereonin, I can only see Kohli contributing heavily towards that effort. Get him early, and India are in trouble.

Only two batsmen really scored today. New ball in morning will be crucial for both teams.
