India v England | India win 4th Test against England by an innings and 36 runs in Mumbai

Should India bat post lunch, for an hour?

If possible, should bat till 35 minutes before Tea & take a lead of 300+ On batting wickets, best medicine is to bat as long as possible without being bogged down. Idea is to make sure that, IND will bat only once & take the match far enough that even batting out the time, ENG can't make IND bat again. Either it's an innings win or an unassailable 2-1 lead. This wicket can't get better & Indian spinners will get enough rest for another 125 overs.

Finally English players feeling the Indian heat plus the crowd's noise is good to hear as well.
Woakes comes in finally.

And some say test cricket is dead in India  We are the only country that can draw attendance for test cricket apart from England and Australia.

I'm in India these days. Went to the stadium yesterday. No tickets were available at the counter, only a few tickets were available online through an app (reason - people didn't know about it and were returning home from the counter).

Even the corporate boxes (extremely expensive) are booked. Some of the vacant seats you see are not available for reasons I am not aware of.

They will probably declare after Yadav gets his hundred. No way India is going to lose the match now.

AT Dhaka, on Day 3, 16K paid crowd was there (And at least another 5K with free pass). Test cricket is still alive in Asia, but attendance can't be the yard stick as people has other ways to follow the game. Telecom operators had a pay day during that 3rd Test from Data & short code (Pus-pull cricket live update) usage. It was never much popular in PAK or SRL.

Yes. I've seen that Bangladesh gets good crowds for test cricket too. Much more than SL/NZ/SA

There was a lot of talk in this forum about Kohli's average of 13 in his last visit to England.

His answer to his critics: an average of 154 against England in this series.

There's a difference between batting against England in India and batting against them in England.

But, he is a different player now and I think he has rectified his weakness around the off-stump. Noticed this in Asia Cup and WI series as well. Gavaskar made a note of it also.

Has come into his own in tests this year.

Let's see how he does in the next England tour.

Already proved himself in Aus and gave a glimpse of his talent in SAF.

I really don't understand when people talk about declaring at these times. Every run not scored now, we will have to score in the 4th innings which will be more difficult. Plus the more we bat, the more the pitch deteriorates.

Eg, if we declare 200 ahead and England scores 300, we have to bat and score 100.Surely its much better to score those runs in the 2nd innings, against a tiring and demoralized attack than come back to bat again in the 5th day? Winning by innings would be the icing on the cake

Missed the gameplay due to connection issues. Saw the highlight reel, and seemed like some good old days being replayed there.

Jayant Yadav deserves some real good applaud and backing. Very well done.
Kohli showing maturity and the tighter strokeplay seen earlier was not an aberration.

Good comeback from that ridiculous collapse.

Which genius looked at this pitch and thought "4 quicks and 2 spinners"?

Only thing, India has to give themselves enough time to get England out. The pitch seems to doing little. They wouldnt want England to play out of their skins and get away in this match (looks unlikely)

How much Virat needs to score in last Test to beat the record, apparently Johnny had a shot at, before coming to Asia?

I think he is still around 200 behind Bairstow. Don't think he will be overtaking Bairstow this year.

But the batsman of the year. Unless Younis or Azhar can do something in next couple of tests.

It depends. We are 180 ahead. and 150 overs left in the match.

If we dont want to bat again, and I reckon we should give ourselves minimum of 4 sessions to bowl them out. England can only play for a draw now. So at most they would score around 2-2.25 runs an overs. They would add at most 250 ish in 4 sessions. We will get to 250 ish by mid of the next session (if we survive till then). Then add another 4-5 overs. So if we declare with about 40 minutes to go in this session, we should not need to bat again.

Nobody ever doubted his ability to pummel England in Indja to be fair

What they could do boss, after Ansari got injured? ENG didn't bring another spinner who can average 35 with bat, hence they went for Woakes over Batty, who definitely can add some runs at 8; which might be handy if ENG is to make IND bat again.

Lol why the heck has Woakes only bowled 10 overs?

Isn't he a frontline seamer??!???

What's the advantage of declaring right now? If Eng gets 300 runs then India has to get those extra runs in crumbing pitch. India can play faster to try to add some quick runs rather than declaring here. Indians should aim to bat just once and anyway they are scoring pretty fast.

I was at the ground on first day. All tickets were sold on that day as well but ground was half empty.

I guess half of the seats are reserved for club members etc & not available to general public. As it's test match, even though all tickets are sold, people won't attend full day. That's why many seats looks empty.

Lowest tickets rates for a day are I guess only 10% of that of an ODI match. Hence some people buy tickets in advance for 5 days & then won't attend full time.

I was just watching highlights of that famous Indian win in Eden Gardens in 2001. What a crowd it was. Simply electric.

It's very annoying, the ground doesn't look fullyet there were no.tickets when I went there. Didn't want to pay 2000 rupees to a tout for a 300 re ticket.

http://www.livemint.com/Consumer/PQ...-Test-Wankhede-braces-up-for-ticket-rush.html

Since its renovation in 2011, the Wankhede stadium’s capacity has come down from around 39,000 seats to 32,000, thanks to its ergonomic bucket seats and a stadium design that leaves space for the sea breeze to blow through the grounds.

From these, about 6,000 seats are reserved for members of MCA’s Garware Club; 6,000 for the gymkhanas—Bombay, Hindu, Islam, Parsee, Catholic; 6,000 for the over 300 club members; some 2,000 for the BCCI; 3,000 complimentary tickets; 3,000 for the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, police, ward officers and other government agencies, besides friends, families and sponsors. This leaves about 5,000 (to a maximum of 10,000 at a stretch) tickets for the public.

There was a lot of doubt about that with Anderson and Broad doing good in India previously and Kohli's form not being great

:hundred for Jayant well played now hope he gets the ball to turn and bounce in next innings

Well then it would make sense to score really fast now instead of declaring

Star is annoying even for good shots hit by Jayant or even a century they are showing Kohli's reaction to the same as if that is more important.

Yadav averages more than Bradman !

There are 2 more (3 in total) - 2 are playing in this Test (Jennings's average is 112 until he bats 2nd time) - but who is the 1st & only one to have a career average better than Sir Don?

Time to turn on the stream. Would love to see Kohli go boom boom now. :afridi

I give up.

Who is it?

The review of the day's play really shows the gulf in class between Star and Sky. Other than being a female, I don't see what Mayanti Langar adds to the broadcast. Dean Jones and Laxman are pretty average. Boycs, Sunny, Hussain and Athers are good but are not around much. I dont mind Siva as much, especially when he is talking about spin.

Compare that to Butcher, Tresco, Willis, Nick Knight and Ian Ward. These guys really know what they are talking about and you can see they have also prepared for review show. Some of star's cast only preparation seems to a bit of face make up.

Who is it?

Andy Guantanemo (#@!#@$%$#) - A Trinidadian WK, who was make shift opener for injured Worell (Or Walcott?), in 1948-49 Wisden trophy. He made 112 in the only innings he played. Next match, Worell returned & AG lost his place in Trinidad team within a year. Excluding that 112, his FC average would have been below 30 & he was apart-time WK (& back-up opener) for Trinidad, hence played about 35 FC matches in entire career!!!!!!!!!

Think they are picking it up from Sony's IPL coverage but shabby still better than them and below Sky ,atleast for test cricket i think they can be professional.

I read this somewhere yesterday (possibly cricinfo commentary). Some bloke from WI who only played a test?

Still a bit harsh to let go someone after he scored a century.

Everytime I watch English players, I feel ashamed of my body. They are so fit. :inzi

Kohli is in another league to every other batsmen.

The perfect batsmen, if he does even 80% of this for another 5 years, he will definitely surpass Sachin.

Kohli goes for 235 not able to overcome Gavaskar, good to see though he was trying to win.

Kohli man, should have just batted normally. We would have achieved a lead of 250 in the next half an hour or so.

There was no need to slog.

Still a bit harsh to let go someone after he scored a century.

That time WI had a very good batting unit -

Walcott, Worrell, Weekes, Sobers, Kanhai, Rae, Stollmeyer, Gomez .... :) in fact Headley played his last Test in that Series, so he was around as well at around 45. One of the main reason was that, he slowed down considerably in 90s, which irritated his Captain Gerry Gomez, a proud white man, who played the game in right spirit; as it cost WI a chance to win the Test. After that, he was dropped & never got the chance to make a come back as players like Hunt, Butcher, Kanhai, Sobers, Collie Smith became permanent.

Besides, he played 50 FC matches in 20 years for T&T ...............

Kohli has bettered his highest score more often than any other player.

The thing is when he gets to his highest, he generally scores only a few more than his previous highest. So he might keep on improving on his highest score, if he remains in form.

Now, 142 overs left & ENG is trailing the Series 0-2. If they don't win this Test, they'll lose the Rubber they had been holding since that 2010 summer.

In that regard, if IND gets all-out in next over -

Will ENG go for an attempt to win - that's batting for 65 overs at 7/over & set IND something 250 in 70 overs to win. In that attempt, they might not make IND bat again, but that's their only chance. OR

They'll bat at 1.7 rate in an attempt to play out 130 overs, making sure that one less Test is lost.
...............................

Food for thought for those who thinks making 4 Day Test (more importantly reducing total overs) will make this game more dynamic, fast, aggressive, entertaining & above all - it'll keep both the sides in the contest till Tea of Day 4.

One more 4for for Adil (that counts in stats, like 50 for batsman), but boy - I swear, he would like to erase it from his stats .........

Hitting shots is not easy on this pitch looking at the turn in the last few overs

I know, I asked for 2 opinions - I guess you are for the 2nd one.

1 vote for the thought that reducing the game time will make Test cricket even more boring as the team behind will kill the game unless there is enough time fr them to force a win.

Bradman's competitor has come down to 2 again...........

Bhuvi really gets some swing even when other bowlers can find nothing. The full over, he found some swing.

What pace is he bowling at?

In a video Wasim did for Sky sports couple of years back, Wasim mentioned that you cant bowl too fast with the new ball as that would reduce your chances of getting good swing. Early to mid 80s increases the chance of a bowler getting swing.

Its for reverse swing thats pace is important. The faster the bowler, the greater the chance of the ball reversing.

Bhuvi seems to be able to increase his pace to mid to high 80s now a days. Lets see if he can reverse the ball.
