LOL, this is hilarious

Well this is daft. It's gloomy, but not unplayable, as Butt has just demonstrated. But off they go. Rubbish

"Who are you to say it is "Rubbish" if the umpires have guidelibes as to when they should and when they should not play based on the light reading?" says a miffed George from the United States. "The only thing that is Rubbish is your commentary..." Well, that and your typing, I would suggest ... guidelibes indeed. But honestly, ask the paying public what they think is rubbish, and they'll give you a less-than-polite answer, I'm sure

stop complaining, its started to rain a bit now as well. unless you're at the ground, you have no idea of the light and conditions for the players. as it's been said before, you don't see the same light on tv as is actually there.

Why are we complaining ? At this rate, under the current overhead conditions we were going to be mauled !

Don't agree with you KU, try facing a red ball coming at you at over 90 mph in dark light like there is at Lord's at the moment. Impossible really.

Exactly - so change the colour of the ball. Make progress.

Due to the restrictive approach of the ICC - we see the use of the red cherry, when there is a need for better solutions.

You are correct, with the current situation - bad light has to be given. This is not my concern as the umpire has to follow the rules. It's the ICC, I have a problem with. This lack of interest in moving the game forward is hampering the sport.

This test i heading towards a draw

only if it rains considerably for the next 3.5 days otherwise this game is quiet advanced and Australia's low total in the first innings means that a full 5days of play is not really necessary...

We are a long long away from even contemplating a draw...

Hopefully, this was not directed at me.

My post is looking at the issue on a larger scale then just this match.

Look just to clear this light thing up, here in NW7 its pretty dark and murky...

they've been experimenting with different color balls, but so far none are good enough.

They could have turned the lights on - but the PCB or Pak team management rejected this before the series began.

It is also the PCB that didn't want the referral system.

Any chance of weather gatting better?

Its just a slight drizzle at the moment - there is a good breeze BUT the clouds are looking more thick set, I can't see any breaks on the horizon...

There was rain forecast so it could stay like this for some time...

As I type it seems to be getting even darker..

Yes, but the push is not strong enough and it hasn't come quick enough.

The pink ball is an interesting case. It has potential, but due to the laziness of ICC - the research has begun now - many years after when it should have begun.

Thanks for the update IMMY...

Ever thought about becoming a meteorologist? :younis

1.20pm The hovercover is still in place, and there's still a fat cloud loitering overhead. "It's just started raining in Paddington," says Anonymous Office Worker. "Doesn't look promising." Indeed, and the bowler's run-ups have now been covered as well ...

cricinfo../

not looking good i guess

Well at the moment its actually raining so the lights would be useless anyway...

With the referel system, I think there was a dispute between sky and the ICC, the ICC wanted Sky to foot the entire bill for the extra cameras/technology required...PCB would obviously not foot the bill because we all know how much common sense they have...Same goes for the lights, Dont expect the PCB to do anything thats actually good for the game...

Latest weather update from NW7 (15/20 mins drive from Lords).

Good News: its stopped raining here
Bad News: Still pretty dark...

The wind is picking up here, lets hope it blows away the darker clouds hanging over Lords!

These stoppages for bad light are increasing the prospects of Aussies actually saving this game. :(

Really, 30 mins till we start? It takes like 10-15 mins to take the covers off!

1.25pm "Was at Lord's yesterday and what a total pleasure it was," says Chris Phillips. "Five slips, bowling to attack and not just contain, fine skills all round, white clothes, no advertising on the ground and a crowd of cricket fans, not drunks dressed as Elvis. This MUST survive. It will always attract a good crowd, at least in England, and one day the rest of the world will recover its senses and remember what makes cricket such a compelling and beautiful game." Amen. Or Inshallah, if you prefer.

This guy is spot on !

Cricinfo's commentary very good for a change

"Last night we played and finished a T20 in Regents Park (close to Lords) after 7pm with a pink ball. Why cant they play in such a visible conditions. I think ICC should shed some light on to these rules."

That's the point really. It's not the fault of the players or the umpires. It's the guidelines that are flawed. MCC are pushing for the use of pink balls to enable both floodlit cricket and better visibility in these conditions, and I for one agree. Thousands of you probably don't, but don't we all love a debate to pass the time?

The George Saga continues !

1.40pm "For George - I thought of using strong words/aggressive words to see my comments online but not sure if they would publish it, hence a polite one," says Kiran. "If you have paid 50 quid per person, it is rubbish to see the players go back in the hut and moreover when its not raining at all..."

Yeah, nothing like the atmosphere in a test match in England. I hope to travel there one day to enjoy it for myself!

Lords groundsmen are up to the job.

I haven't seen Amin bat before, hope he has a better technique than Ali.

conditions would be tough for batting now....

they were getting a touch easier before

amin is definetly more tecnically sound...

he went to the same school as me and played for the same club under the same coach and he was solid back in the days..

Why aren't you playing for Pakistan :(

Definitely brigher here in NW7 what is more I can see much lighter/brighter cllouds on the horizon!!!

The weather is cooler and breezier so this in theory should prevent the ball from swinging...
Lets see....

Yep, today is the last day for such conditions, tommorow's forecast is sunny. It's vital we don't get bowled out today because Australia will likely score more than 250 in the second innings.

lol..i dunno.
may b i dint get the support from my family...
and then i moved to london and now dubai.....only played club and univrsity cricket but at a good level

re: Floodlights issue

PCB as 'home' board made call for consistency; no lights at Headingley so can't use lights at Lord's (via HomeOfCricket@twiiter)

20 mins

Though going by the past here in England, dont be surprised if it suddenly starts raining 3 mins before the players are due to come out

Thanks, it's good to hear. It's sometimes very difficult to gage a batsmans footwork, bat speed, defence etc when they are on their debut.

Playing your first game at Lords against Australia in these conditions will obviously make them very nervous.

He's a brilliant fielder and the very best of luck to the young lad.

revised schedule

Meanwhile, some revised session times. Tea at 4.10pm, and close at 6.30pm. Seven overs will be lost if we restart as scheduled.

Its going to be an extremely tough day for our boys with these stop start sessions! Lets hope they dont loose concentration. Good luck!

cricinfo

Today's lunch at Lord's: guinea fowl, broccoli and blue cheese tart, lemon and oregano potatoes. Yesterday: confit of duck, fish cakes, sponge cakes for afternoon tea. And three days to go. I might exceed my weight allowance on the flight home."

wth?

Either he's kidding, or those foods are so insanely expensive that none of us can afford it.

Concentration will be the key for our batters. If they can leave alone the swinging balls the Australian bowlers are a lot less accurate than ours, they will dish up plenty of loose balls which need to be put away. The run-rate isn't too bad at the moment but you don't want it to drop too much. Even in tough conditions it's important to keep the runs flowing.

Salman Butt has done this very well so far, let's hope he keeps it up all day.
