Proteas can reclaim some pride – Elgar | Squad movements and injury updates

Wednesday, 20 January 2016

The dead-rubber fourth Sunfoil Test match against England starting at SuperSport Park in Centurion on Friday will be an opportunity for the Castle Lager Proteas to reclaim some lost pride says opener, Dean Elgar. With this being the last Test match of the summer, it presents the ideal platform for the players to regain some confidence and to play the brand of cricket that has been associated with the Proteas Test team for many years.

“The importance of the game is still up there,” Elgar said to the media at SuperSport Park on Wednesday. “ We have put in a lot of emphasis on ending the series well. Things haven’t worked out the way that we wanted them to in the last three games but there is still a lot to play for in this game. There is a lot of pride that has been left out on the field and a lot of pride can be claimed back if we compete well in this Test. The result will depend on the way we conduct ourselves on the field, that is quite important for us.

“It’s definitely not a dead-rubber in my eyes, I still want to go out and compete, try my best and play as hard as I can for my country. There are a lot of other guys in our squad that share the same feelings as me.”

Elgar touched on the challenges of opening the batting in South Africa, and singled out mental strength as the key towards success. He seems set to partner with Stephen Cook at the top of the order, a familiar counterpart having opened together for South Africa ‘A’ a few years ago.

“Personally I think it’s the toughest part of this game,” he explained. “You have to be mentally in-tune, you don’t necessarily have an hour to relax after fielding, you have 10 minutes. Mentally you have to be comfortable with yourself and your role. It’s a position that you need to have for a long period of time to get accustomed to it.”

After a trying series against India where he averaged 19.57 (137 runs), Elgar has been the most consistent of the Proteas batsmen with an average of 65.75 (263 runs) and a century to his name this series.

“I’ve been reasonably happy with the way things have gone,” he said. “In the same breath I have been frustrated as well. I have three 40’s which, if people know me, really grinds me. I’m one of those players who would rather go out for a low score than go out at 40 or 50 when the hard work has been done and all you have to do is apply yourself a little bit more. After what happened in India I will take the form that I have had so far this series. There are still two more innings left in this series and I want to try and make them count personally.”

Squad movements and injury updates
Hardus Viljoen and Dane Vilas have been released for the next round of Sunfoil Series matches starting on January 21st. Although Stiaan van Zyl has also been released, the left-hander is unavailable for the Cape Cobras due to injury. Quinton de Kock has been passed fit following his knee injury and is available for selection for the match.

Decent start again for S.A but this is where there batsmen need to get big runs once they have got themselves in.

what a catch again by taylor! hes doing well at short leg!

As much as I like Amla, he certainly does suck the life out of a brisk and positive start.

:)) Moeen Ali with the breakthrough Bilal7

Did they seriously drop Finn for Woakes?!

He's injured. Out of the tour. Plunkett has been called up instead.

Woakes is more of a like-for-like replacement for Jimmy in fairness. I can see him being first change behind Broad and Finn in future.

S.A 104/1 and scoring quickly. They will be very happy with start to this match.

Amla batting with a free mindset once the series is over.

For SA's sake, I hope Stephen Cook has a Test career similar to his namesake.

What a glorious pitch.

Perfect pitch for Amla Bhai who is playing an amazing innings against spitting and seaming pitch.

And if it turns a bit at the end of the day, then Moeen Bhai can benefit too.

A good day that will be.

But Kohli has been smashing hundreds. :sadbye

I can't believe SA kept selecting Van Zyl ahead of Cook. He looks much more assured at the crease.

Where was Stephen Cook when South Africa actually needed him. Instead they persisted with Van Zyl.

Excellent knock so far.

Probably has something to do with his age.

Sure he's 33 but look at the difference having a solid opener along with Elgar has made to this batting lineup. I think SA should persistent with him for a couple of years at least till they find a talented young opening batsman. Kinda like Chris Rogers was for Australia.

Expecting three centuries from SA and a total over 500 in the first inning.

I haven't seen such a fluent knock by Amla in 3-4 years. Dismantling the other Bhai like he dismantled Graeme Swann 4 years ago great stuff :)

Amla having a Steven Smith type series ( Ashes last year) here..A double century on flat deck and most likely a century here on dead rubber.

This is cafeteria bowling from England, Woakes in particular. Should have gone for the left-arm quick Footit, at least Chef could change the style of attack.

Anderson reduced to bowling wide outside off-stump. Sad to see for England's #1 Pakistani fan. S Cook has already played a more impactful knock than A Cook in this series.

England got lucky in the last test match. Amla got an absolute peach from Finn in the first innings and was caught brilliantly by Taylor in the second one. Otherwise this 99* would have come in the last game.

LOL! Botham is like "When did India last win outside India?"

Yep England got lucky because they have a very good bowler and a very good short leg, how lucky can they get...

Ridiculous statement.

Whattay player! 25th test century and a delightful one it is. The only bonafide ATG currently playing in this match.

Stephen Cook needs another 15 runs to overtake Alastair Cook's run tally for this whole series (i.e. 6 innings). :usman

Amla has already scored 366 runs in this series, at an average of 73. Cook has scored 103 at 17. Steyn and Philander are not playing. :amla

One captain will take the trophy home, the other chickened out in the middle of the series. :49:

Yeah and hes failed when hes team needed it most and score most of runs on the one surface which was not bowler friendly.

When did his team need him the most? I remember he scored a match-saving 200 when that happened.

Alaister Cook is amazing but he is YET to have a standout series against an amazing attack.

NZ at home recently was a good series but that's the only one series where I remember him clicking against a good bowling attack.

Amla's average in this series means nothing. But good to see him back among the runs.

Taylor is crazy good under the helmet. Has any fielder been better than him in history? Taken three blinders in two matches already.

The legend leads ALL the players off the field. Can't deny that the English captain is a top guy.

As usual, no pressure on South Africa.

And there is Amla, back among the runs.

Another effortless ton by amla , amla is a great in test cricket. He performs in most situations in test cricket. Captaincy affected his batting.

Good delivery from Stokes! Amla goes after scoring 109. Time for AB to put the Poms to the slaughter.
