What's new

Sussex vs Pakistanis | Tour Match | Hove | Jul 8th-10th, 2016 | Day 1

England are well aware that Misbah can only score and survive against spin, and so are starving him of pace until the Test match, to impede his practice and improvement.

Mind you, the second new ball is due now, and Anderson and Broad humiliated him with the second new ball in the UAE.
Misbah is more of a worry in England than Hafeez.

Sussex fed him over after over of spin, but against the second new ball his stats were:

13 balls against pace
2 runs
Out to 13th delivery

Sarfaraz also needs some practice against the newish ball. Azhar and Shafiq have done well so far, but those who are yet to perform should be promoted.

Sarfraz will have to face the second new ball in the Tests so this is good.

We lost two wickets with second new ball in 10 overs (both set batsmen)...All four new ball wickets to same bowler(who is probably only good new ball bowler)...Not a good sign :(

It's also his first-class debut. :murali

My bad. Ill start being unbiased. Imran Khan jr is the best Test bowler in the history of Pakistan cricket and Babar Azam is rubbish because he doesnt have amazing first class stats. Ahmed Shehzad should be captain in all 3 formats.
LOL!! thank you for the laugh.

waiting to see how Misbah and Azhar got out. Misbah's dismissal sounded a poor one for him (playing no shot apparently)

Hafeez' wicket was really, really poor. He wasn't even in line with the ball to start off with, and feet didn't move at all. Very poor and worrying dismissal..

Great shots from Sarfraz. So happy to see him in form. Very important player in this Test team where the tail starts at 8. And even better that its against the pacer.

They play till 6pm even if the 90 overs are finished. 90 is the minimum required overs, not maximum

Team in being ahead of the over rate shocker. Makes a refreshing change.

I know they brought on their spinners a lot but shows no excuse for teams to have slow over rates !

Both Azhar and Younis should not bat in the 2nd innings. Should be given opportunities to Hafeez, Masood, Sarfraz, Shafiq and Wahab

It was a clear plan to make sure he doesn't face too much pace just give him spinners so it makes his practice not that great.

since, it is a practice match....so i have a question that why pak is playing with 11 players and more than 11 is there any rule in this match to play only 11 players because i want to see sami aslam and rizwan also to be the part of practice match. If any one knows please tell me.

There's no doubt now! Azhar Ali is truly World-Class and he will surely end up with 10k+ runs in tests!

It's a Tour match, so it has FC status. 11 a side.

Great batting display, and great to see everyone get some time in.

1 more over we bat tomorrow, and then our bowlers hopefully wrap them up tomorrow to send Hafeez and Shan back out to the pitch.

Reading the match report on cricinfo: seems like Hafeez was dropped on 15 before he was dismissed. Azhar Ali was also dropped early then on 57. Younis Khan and misbah had a few nervy moments. So, yeah while I am happy for these guys scoring runs, not sure how many would have been allowed to score against a first eleven.
As for hafeez, just the fact that he knows he is not in the uae has him shaking in his boots

And Butt did not fail in the Pakistan Cup. He failed in the Final. In the semi he played Amir better than anyone else has in the last year.

Butt did fail in the Pakistan Cup. Stop making things up.

He averaged 27.00 at a Strike Rate of 62 in a One Day tournament. That is a failed outing by every measure

Junaids Bhai avoiding this post like the plague like he does with Umar Akmal related replies too whenever he is confronted by facts.

Is Sussex also a bottom ranked county side? In the last match Mamoon and his glass-half-empty brigade were downplaying Pakistan's performance since it came against a 6th ranked side.

It is a Division two side.

He is biggest pessimistic I've ever seen in my life. Doesn't even gets happy even on this BD.

On flip side, when he lost the argument with a poster, then he said, well if they (PAK) play well it's good for them. What kind of statement is this for a team you support?

It's very obvious that he has his personal likes and dislikes (about teams and players) which he always try to impose by twisting arguments with others. I don't take him seriously and don't even read his comments.

Don't remember the argument, or the poster or me saying this.

Nonetheless, I don't see the issue here. I'm a Pakistan cricket fan but cricket at the end of the day is just entertainment.

Yes I take it more seriously than most other people which is why I am here with 60k posts, but still it is not a matter of life and death; win or lose, you move on and it doesn't impact you at all in the grand scheme of things.

Don't understand why most is offensive. Pakistan winning or losing is definitely not good/bad for me, or for any poster here unless he is into betting, which I am not.

Nonetheless, nothing to look into this performance. It is a Division 2 side with very little individual and collective experience at a competitive level, where four catches were dropped and looks like the only half-decent seamer picked up 4 wickets.

Of course it is always good to get some runs under your belt and spend some time at the crease. As long as they don't get false overconfidence from this show, it cannot do any harm.

Even a James Anderson-less bowling attack that Pakistan will face in the first Test will be nothing like what they have faced so far in the last week or so.

Just came back from the match. Some of the things i noticed:

First of all the west indian bowler who made his debut for sussex today, what a talent, had the Pakistani batsman in all sorts of trouble throughout the day. Surprised he only ended up with 4 wickets, this is how good his bowling was.

Shan Masood is really a bright, articulate young man who is making all the right impressions with the management, the team players and most importantly the fans. Also this might surprise everyone, Shaan has got some body hiding underneath those clothes. He took his shirt off and the boy is ripped to shreds.

Whilst watching the team live you realise how Hafeez is really the only stroke maker in the team, and some of his shots look ridiculously good in real time.

Sarfraz and Asad really been putting in the work on their fitness, staying back for another half an hour after the end of play to do running and other exercises whilst all the other squad was chatting amongst them selves or eating in the pavilion.

Saw Sami Aslam do a net session in the tea break against Yasir, Amir and Rahat and no word of lie that boy can bat, Solid technique, gets his body right behind the line of the ball, has all the offside shots and was carving Yasir for fours each time Yasir pushed the ball back.

Players that i found to be slightly uncomfortable being asked for photos, handshakes or autographs were Wahab, Azhar, Rahat, Sarfraz, Yasir.

Yunus was wonderful with kids, stopping over at lunch with a plate in his hand signing autographs for all the kids. he even told them to start eating vegetables and fish as its very good for them. Misbah is another who was wonderful with the fans. But most suprisngly to me Hafeez was the most down to earth person in them team, he was so humble and took extra time out to make sure he got a picture with single one of the fans that went up to him for a picture.

Thanks for the post! :najam

1. Shan Masood indeed has all non-cricketing things going for him. He got into the team, not on merit but because of other things, and continues to humiliate us as a team giving us poor starts. Sadly, doesn't have the technique to survive either.

2. Hafeez is an excellent stroke maker and a treat to watch when on song. Sadly, this only happens when there's not even a centimeter of movement on offer.

3. Correct. He's a great prospect and needs to be nourished. Has all the shots in the book, good defence, pull shot and off-side play.

thanks for the account bro, a positive report about the Pakistani players and what they do before, during and after play really helps with the big picture.

When you are watching live you can judge things even better than watching on tv.

Good to hear about that West Indian bowler, he did well today full credit to him.

Shan takes his fitness serious so not surprised to hear he is in such good shape. This tour is make or break for him.

I have always thought when Hafeez is set he is eye catching so not surprised to hear you have the same opinion when watching him live in the ground.

Good to hear that asad and sarfaraz are working on there fitness especially sarfaraz as he has looked overweight at times. Seen some of the pics of the players at the ground and in training in the last few days sarfaraz looks to have worked on his fitness. So can see where that has come from. Wouldn't be surprised if Arthur gave him some encouragement.

Sami is a talanted boy, don't see him playing much on this tour but good to know that he looks good in training as that's the only time he will be holding a bat this summer.

Some of those players you mentioned maybe shy when it comes to interacting with fans.

Younis hafeez and misbah seem good guys tbh. Even though younis has had some attitude problems at times with fans he's always had time for them. Not surprised by misbah at all. Class guy on and off the pitch.

Thought id mention a few more things:

Both Wahab and Sohail were in the gym muscle work at the start of play in the morning and after lunch saw both pad up and have a net session for an hour. It was good to see this as both are playing in the current match so one would have thought they wouldn't be in the gym or nets during the Pak batting innings.

Mushtaq Ahmed spent the entire net session that i saw with the fast bowlers telling them what to do. During the same net session Yasir Shah was bowling as well but Mushi was more busy talking to Rahat and Amir

Mushi was working with Amir on a new delivery/Amir was practising this delivery which from what i could make out from what Amir was describing to the batsman Rizwan was that he grips the seam as such that it pings through, the point of the delivery is to pitch on normal length but to ping through so it hurries the batsman i guess. I think its meant to be a surprise delivery for a batsman

Dunno why people are crying about openers.

And it's mind boggling why people have such unrealistic expectations from these two

One fiction that needs to be dispelled is that there are openers not in the squad who will definitely do better than these two.

Ever since I've been watching cricket we have had a shaky opening pair (even when Anwar was there). So if both openers even manage to average 30 over the course of the series then we will have an unbelievably good opening pair by our standards

I think you are missing the point entirely. Of course we cant know for sure that someone else will *definitely* do better than Hafeez. Who knows the future *definitely*? But if you blood new players you have at least begun the search for alternatives. Investing in the future, that kind of thing.

I personally believe that Hafeez deserves a run in England. Hes played well enough. But I just dont see him doing well. peter Rose was spot on. The issues are mental and physical with him.

a couple of pakistani players have got new full british kit sponsorships, Wahab was dripped in head to toe in New Balance equipment and most surprisingly Sami Aslam has a full GM sponsorship

During one of the sessions Ifthikar and Yasir were water boys and sitting on two chairs at the edge of the boundary, Hafeez came to spread his kit out in the sun after he got out next to the water boys and decided he wanted to watch the match from there. Ifthikar quickly got up and offered his seat to Hafeez but Hafeez lovingly told him to sit back down on the chair and sat on the grass watching the match. I know its not a big deal but i know our team has suffered terribly due to "senior culture" so it was refreshing to see such an experienced player being humble to a debutant in the squad.

Also Rizwan and Iftithkar when sitting on the chairs as water boys in the first session and were peeling boiled eggs for some reason. I don't know if they were for themselves or the two batsman out in the middle :inti

Talking about Mr.Inti he hasn't aged a day since 2010 when i last saw him. Only the hearing has got worse i think as he needs two PCB officials around him at all times so they repeat what is being said by the other person

We're facing a B level non international squad. We should be handily beating them. Though we have 350, part of me feels a bit disappointed, especially given the amount of drops.
