Umar Akmal : Mega Discussion Thread

Played aggressively upfront because he had the tukk tukk master on the other end. But once Kaptaan saab went he started playing smartly taking singles and doubles and his little partnership with Sarfraz was really pleasing to see.

He gave Dilhara some hefty blows though he played a stupid shot in the end, but I was expecting that, honestly, so nothing to blame.

Well played kid! and keep up the momentum for next matches!
 
Very Valid points man

Considering Umar is only 21 Years he will have more than enough opportunities to prove his worth in Test Cricket

Him and Fawad Alam needs to be consistently in the side

Leniency can be given but not Free Rides

Free rides are those given to people who are repeated failures.... Despite having played for yonks.

A certain mister Farhat comes to mind.

you wouldnt have said that if you had seen his whole innings life. Its not natural to slog sweep a leg spinner the way he did, its not natural to dance down the track when you are unsure about spin. Its just stupidity. Just like his dismissal.

Dont get me wrong, I'm happy with his progress but you're just kidding yourself if you believe he's done enough to walk back in test team. If anything, his dismissal is proof enough why he should not play the longer version. Yes there is improvement, let hope it continues and dont rush.

Oh and btw, I'm not blaming him for the loss.

Don't get me wrong - he is by no means the finished article. He has the raw ingredients to be in he inzy class.

He needs good coaching and mentoring as do all our youngsters.

He effectively needs to develop his game in the international side.

He needs to bat with the likes of yk and misbah so he improves.

The reason why he has gone backwards is that the think tank tried to turn him into afridi by making him bat so low down.

Also there was a period when the whole batting line up relied on him performing. That is not fair on a 20 year old.

People are being fooled into thinking our batting line up is strong because we have recently been batting on flat tracks or against rubbish bowling.

Have a look at where umarakmal has batted in his career.

Always outside the subcontinent and against better teams.

What he has already achieved for a 20 year old is amazing.

I made up my mind about his guy when I saw his two debut innings against a strong nz attack in nz.

One innings was a counterattacking one cos that was required. The other was a patient innings relevant to the circumstances.

There is nothing I have seen that suggests otherwise.

None of our batsmen come into test cricket ready.... They need on the job training against international attacks.

Great post.

I believe we need to move him up the order in ODIs and give him responsibility to play through the innings. If he can show he has what it takes to play big innings then play him in tests by all means.

He should Definitely be batting at 4 in ODIs.

At 3 in T20s and 5 or 6 in tests

This guy is our future and I love seeing him play with so much patriotism, He deserves all the success and I am gutted he is not back for the Bangladesh series casue Shafiq is terrible.

Insh'Allah Umar continues his fine form :)

he is showing signs of improvements ,,although his offside game needs some imprvement. specially driving is non existent.

once again takes Pakistan out of trouble which he has been doing for a long time but some people on here don't rate him coz he does not make big centuries.
 
to me it does not matter if he makes big runs or not all I care is a match winning knock from a batsman.At least he does his job
 
Umar has been coming constantly under pressure to bat, and the lad has performed quite well, avg. 39 in ODIs is pretty darn good for someone who has been wasted low down the order...good innings today but really wanted him to score a 100 but at least he's starting to show consistency, so 100s will come...and I agree with Khan ji, he MUST return to TEST team against England!!!
 
He throws it away, that is the reason he is not the test team. He is a good batsman but lacks the temperament to play a patient, a long innings. I hope he gets to play 2 3 matches with SNGPL this season.
 
I think we need that urgency and ability to counterattack vs. england. Slow grafting works well, but sometimes you need to accelerate in an innings. I agreed with the decision to send him back to domestic, but I would like to see him come back for a series against England. Alot depends on how Shafiq does in his two tests vs BD.
 
he should be in the test side , shafiq has played all his matches in the uae , still does not have a better record than akmal , akmal by far the best limited overs bat in pakistan average of nearly 40 and a strike rate close to 90 , bats at 6 and yet to play a match at home .
dont care about his temperament because clearly he is better than a lot of other batsmen in the side , its a joke that he got dropped for that freak dismissal against zimbabwe , our selectors are retarted .
ahmed shahzad and umar akmal are by far the twomost talented batsmen in pakistan , only need a little backing
instead one has been replaced by farhat and the other is confined to limited overs cricket..

100 would have been great! But we shouldn't put pressure on the lad yet. Just help him develop.
 
Beautiful innings today. Needs to bat at NO.4 to show and fulfill his full talent. The best young batsmen in the world and soon to be the best batsmen in the entire world if he uses his head and learns how to chase matches by him self.
 
He was dropped from the test side because of his unfortunate way to get out against Zimbabwe.
He was our most consistant batsman in west indies in the Test series but the captain seems to not like young and talented players.
He deserves to play every match in every format for Pakistan.
 
there are only 3 players in world cricket who can change the game in the middle overs.

KP for England
Yuvraaj for India
and Umar Akmal for Pakistan

all of them are pure match winners
 
Needs to bat up the order.


We're just wasting him at number 6 or 5. I'd like to see him at 3 but since most of our batsman aren't brave enough to accept that spot, I wouldn't mind four as well.

At least he know that the match will be won by the team scoring the most runs and not the most balls.
He was the top scorer for Pakistan today, and also did it at a good strike rate to let other player score some runs.

was an ODI, shouldn't take proof from an ODI that he can play tests. Still not sure he has the temperament.

Think Fawad's still the best option to come in, especially since he seems to be averaging 100 these days in domestic lol. Clearly wasting his talent there. Umar's got enough on his place in limited overs and now being asked to keep.

Doesnt matter what form of the game it is....

You only have specialists around the fringes.

The lads immensely talented but needs to learn to make it big and make it count - not throw it away

I think he more than made it count so please keep your suggestions to yourself. There are more than enough batsmen today to pick on. Umar Akmal is the least of anyone's concern.
 
today shows how important Misbah and YK are in the side in terms of helping the youngsters in the middle

UA has talent no doubt but needs to stay longer at the wicket to score big runs

Azhar Ali is still learning and so is Shafiq

Although he got out trying to hit he still contributed and is progressing

If people can't see that :umarakmal is the future of Pak cricket..... They will never see it.
 
The case is getting stronger and stronger for Umar Akmal. Tomorrow we will realize more that how much we need him.

A year after our discussion on Umar Akmal's rightful omission during Pak's period of rebuilding, I believe his time has come again. Pakistan now have a solid enough base to their side to afford this gamble, if they are aiming to go up a notch.

solid, but equally stoic. Umar Akmal is a wildcard player but he can turn an unspectacular side into a special one.

Scoring @ what 2.4 rpo? Pakistan need a bit of variety in the batting. I am sure if umar got to play against bangladesh , would have racked up a ton easily.
 
Until he starts putting a price on his wkt he should be nowhere near the test team I like his aggressive attitude of batting but would like him to display some brains from time to time as well

How do you expect him to put price on his wicket unless you play him in tests? I am sure asad can't do jack with the lower order and won't even be able to get a single on the last delivery of the over. I think you want him to go azhar and asad way of batting? Our batting is way too one dimensional. Secondly grit is needed where it is required not everywhere you have to slow things down to stabilize.
 
Knowing we have umar for England would make me so much more optimistic of our chances in winning.

Asad has been OK. But consider what his job has been over the past few matches. Pretty much always comes in when Pakistan have a lead or are in a strong position, but then fails to up the tempo.
 
Umar has an abundance of talent but a chronic shortage of brains. Flashy dashy players are not needed in Tests. He needs to learn how to put a price on his wicket and not to go for one shot too many. He made the same mistakes during his Academy years where the coaches there criticised his temperament. However against Bangladesh he probably should have played considering the opposition bowling attack, he could have gained some confidence and may improve with experience.

They batted together really well back in the day...

Thought they would spend 10 years batting together like :inzi and :yk.

I am also joining this club after watching today's batting by Pakistani batsmen. I want this one of the most talented boy from Pakistan back in the test team.
 
Finally! Sense has prevailed!

Umar Akmal gets the call up to the Test squad.

Unfortunately it has been a waste of a year in his career!

Now I hope they select him for the First test!
 
All the people against umar i ask u a qusetion if umar doesnt deserve to be in the team then who ? Asad shafiq ? Umar tries to provide the team which it needs ? & what all of ur other so called talented players does is they try to save their place in team ...
