Ponting was pretty dumb for making the bowlers bowl 90 overs in a day, he should have given each of the bowlers 5 overs each and bowled the rest himself. He is overbowling the bowlers.

Ponting let the game meander for a bit though with defensive fields and his spinners bowling with no variety. Though he probably didn't want to get fined for a slow over rate.

I thought the Hilf was best on show today. Siddle bowled well without luck, while MJ was well below his best and not moving the ball much.

Insightful. Ponting's use of the spinners handed the momentum back to England - and bowling them for such long spells achieves nothing other than upping the over rate.

I reckon MJ bowled some ordinary stuff today, well below what we saw in Yarpieland. Clearly looks like he needs some more match fitness to get his rhythm. The wickets he got today were more to deception than anything else. I'm a bit worried about his lack of form TBH.

That said, I happy the boffins in charge picked the Hilf, easily the best bowler today with Siddle a close second. Siddle started to put it together towards the end of the day when he started to get good movement. As for Horroritz lulz!! what a waste of time and waste of space. Took a truly brainless shot from Kevinder who gifted him his wicket, it was ridiculous. I can't see how he would have remotely fluked a wicket otherwise. But unfortunately we've got from having two world class leggies to a nub like Horroritz who can't spin a bottle let alone the ball. Plus he looks too much like a wuss, like a bloke you would beat up behind the toilets after school. How can you be scared of a bloke who looks like Doogie Howser??

We're going to have to bat well and we need Dubya to stand up and get a ton along with significant contributions from other blokes because I reckon we'll do it tough chasing more than 200 on this wicket batting last.

I went back and checked the Test performances by OZ players in the past two years and based on past performances Dubya has had an ordinary couple of years. Amazingly Krapich and Pup have become our most consistent players, with Dubya and Huss well down the list.

The Aussies batting line up has no one to fear in it and has no one who will take the game away from england in space of a session. In past Aussies had Slater, Hayden, Pointing (In his prime) and Gilly. All batsmen who could dominate and thrash an attack.

Ponting played an awesome knock in SA in the first test I think. He counter-attacked with an excellent 80-odd when Australia was in deep trouble.

That wasn't long ago.

This deck doesn't look that threatening.

was at the game fantastic experiance although i must say did expect abit more from the crowd as it was their first test and i thought they would want to make an impression to the english boys

Hah! Those Welshmen were probably more on Australia's side than ours!

MJ is a bowler who needs work to get into a rhythm. He didn't bowl very well but still got 2 very important wickets in the first session. Has a knack of taking wickets which is very handy for bowler to have.

Siddle's first go at it in England, what I like about Siddle is that he learns and improves. Are you listening Brett Lee?

The Hilf was good. People are a bit harsh on a bloke who has played 4 Tests, even Siddle has played twice as many.

Where does Ponting go from here if lets say the Aussies lose the ashes?

Does someone have the stats comparing the economy rates of the current Aussie bowlers and Warne, Mcgrath, Gillespie, Kasprowicz?

Mcgrath, Warne, Gillespie and Kasprowicz not only got wickets but they never gave any easy runs away. You could bet on them bowling maidens inspite of having massive gaps on the on and off side. Conceeding runs more often even if you take wickets does make a difference especially as far as creating pressure is concerned.

I am not saying Pakistan can beat this Aussie team but the Aussies just look a lot more fragile now. Ponting as a batsman does not exhibit the same assurity and confidence as oppossed to pre Jan 2008.

On to the next series perhaps.

CA are not wrist slitters and changing captains just because they lose a series does not make sense. Do you expect England to sack Strauss if they lose?.

Ponting has done a brilliant job leading Australia and we fully expect to lose a few series while the team gains experience and develops. It is not uncommon for a team not to win every single series they play and if you go sacking captains what you end up with is a team of ex-captains which leads to infighting and the team pulling in all different directions.

These bowlers retired years ago, time to get over it and realise this is a different team, not so talented but still not short of heart.

Watching Pakistan play Sri Lanka didnt make me think that they have the confidence to beat Australia in a five day game, they may play well for a few sessions but over five days they will at some stage implode.

Its another beautiful day here in Cardiff.

Not as hot as yesterday - but the sun is shining and its warm - a few hight clouds, but nothing threatening.

My son's school had a ballot for Ashes tkts for todays play.

He missed out :(

Englands tail needs to wag today and try to get 400 and then they need to try and make inroads into the Aussies batting.

As I speak, its clouded over where I am - and this weather tends to head towards the stadium about 30 mins later.

I think englands tail will wag to 360+, and then broad and anderson will rock their top order.

Oz bowling has been quite average, MJ bowling with scrambled seam, no swing, siddle bowling too many balls far outside the offstump, but Hilfenhaus did well doctrove denied him a few wickets.

Broad and anderson will be do better than siddle/johnson.

I wouldn't say an average of 43 with 4 hundreds is ordinary. Its better then life time averages of many classy players. Also I believe in last 2 years, he has played in 4 series with South Africa and India (2 each) – No 2 and No 3 Test teams at present.

Its just that it pales in comparison to his over all average of 56!!

Positice cricket from Swann - handy coming in at No.9!

374-8

England will be happy if they get 400 here!

400 up with 8 down, Swann counterattacking brilliantly, did the same at Lords against the Windies.

TOTAL CARNAGE

400 up - swann has just dismantaled the Horrorist

awesome highlights package last night

can't wait for tonight

Jimmy joins in! Perhaps he should teach KP how to sweep!

411-8

Ok guys england shudnt get 2 happy. They attacking for once, no need 2 make it out 2be smmat special

This must be a very flat pitch. Aussie's best bowlers can't get these tailenders out and a lot of the other England batsmen got themselves out.

However, the pressure may get to Oz in their own innings.

Should be an interesting day's play.

Monty in

i reckon England are gonna be all over the ozzies in 30 mins time

the wicket is starting to take good spin here...swann and penesaar should be be a handful
as should the english seamers...

england is in a very very good position!

this is an awesome game - love the way the both teams keep punching back

total slug fest

Englands running has been brilliant! Even Monty scampering quick singles!

Monty was working very hard in the batting nets 2 days back - and it looks like its paid off

Our new attack is coming along well but it lacks the ability to finish teams off at this stage.

Think we might have lost this game in this session.

Its bad times for aus ahead but I can see ponting clarke and hussy filling there boots here as Eng bowling is mediocre too. I am predicting couple of hundreds from Eng bowler one for broad and other probably for swann.

lol!!

catch off a no ball - ozzies make a real mess of this

well done england

and there's 3 wkts for 95 for holocast hauritz too

english bowling mediocre?

on paper and present form anderson is presently one of the best swing bowlers in international cricket...broad is an extremely talented seam bowler...flintoff is the talisman, he can be absolutely destructive with the ball and even if he doesnt pick up wickets (as has been the case of late) he usually doesnt give any runs away...swann has been a revelation of late and with all the aussie lefthanders he should find himself very much in this game...

lets see what occurs shall we but one thing for certain, i wouldnt start rubbishing the england bowling attack even before they have bowled!

Good score from Eng buy I expect aussies to get 150 lead by fourth afternoon and then see what Eng are made of.

James Anderson averages 80 runs per wicket against Australia.

Eng 435 all out, to me thats 85 runs more than what Aussies would want. England in a very strong postion now!

Well he last played against us 18 months ago. So not very long ago really.

He may have improved but he is improving from a position of utter patheticness so don't agree he is anywhere near the best anything in the world.

Aussies starting off in T20 style!

13 off 8 balls!

Make it 17 off 9 balls!

Broad getting whipped!

listen i know the aussies were the best and they had one of the best attacked in the history of cricket...but thats gone now..and however disappointed you may have been with johnson and the rest, there is no need to take it out on englands bowlers, particularly since the aussies have not even batted as yet...

p.s.
enjoy hughes batting..seems he only knows one way to play and so far so good...exciting stuff

Hughes on the Rampage here!

Aus 17/0 after just 1.4 overs!

YOu need a 8-1 field for Hughes. One guy on the leg side around square leg

Is broad touching 93-94 mph like he was touching against the WI?

Day 2 - Lunch

Aus: 39-0

The kids on the field in the background are from my son's school!

Intresting to see how England try and combat this assault from Hughes.

Yes, the speed gun clocked him at 93mph before lunch. Bowled utter crap though.

Strauss is a rubbish captain - after Flintoff's tight over he should have turned to a spinner but instead he goes back to Broad.

Flintoff's already got Hughes on the back foot - only a matter of time now...

hughes really suspect to the short ball towards his body ala raina

Flintoff drops Hughes off a C&B chance

Should have held it

Flintoff giving hughes a working over here!

55/0

Hughes certainly gives the ball a good thump!
