The lead-up to Australia's first Test of 2024 naturally revolved around David Warner. Much was discussed about his legacy, passion for the sport, pioneering role at the top of the order, and his uplifting presence for the team. However, a somber note struck when it was revealed that Warner had lost or had his treasured Baggy Green stolen. Warner made a heartfelt plea on social media, hoping for its safe return before his 112th and final Test appearance.

With Australia securing the series in a closely contested match in Melbourne, the focus will inevitably be on Warner's farewell during the Pink Test. This marks the beginning of a new chapter for Australia, a year that might not be as eventful as the previous one but holds the potential to build on the team's recent success, including two world trophies in 2023.

Pat Cummins, not one for New Year resolutions, approaches the future one week at a time. While he wishes for a special week celebrating Warner, he is equally eager to maintain the team's momentum with a clean sweep before facing the West Indies later in the month.

As Australia prepares for a farewell, Pakistan is embracing what many perceive as the dawn of a new era with the debut of left-hander Saim Ayub. Ayub, similar to Warner, has made a mark in white-ball cricket and boasts an impressive first-class record. His inclusion signals Pakistan's departure from their traditional Test cricket approach under Shan Masood.

Ayub's debut coinciding with Warner's departure seems fitting, considering Warner paved the way for young players like him to excel across formats. It's also an opportunity for Pakistan to bounce back after a week in Melbourne where they came close to upsetting the hosts. Despite falling short, the close contest has given the visitors confidence that they can compete and possibly outperform the favored hosts.

When: January 3, 4:30 AM PST

Where: SCG, Sydney

Team News:

Australia

In two weeks, discussions around team selection will likely heat up as they prepare for the first Test against the West Indies. However, at present, Australia appears to be more stable than ever, paradoxically with a significant player gearing up for his final Test.

Pakistan

Two days before the Test, Shaheen Shah Afridi spent a considerable time bowling. However, it's a noteworthy development that Pakistan has opted to exclude him from the final Test, especially when he appeared to be finding his form at the MCG. Shan Masood explicitly expressed his admiration for the left-arm bowler in a press conference on Tuesday (January 2). The Australian team will now face a somewhat weakened pace attack from Pakistan, possibly influenced by the number of overs Afridi has bowled, leading the selectors to give him a break.

This decision creates an opportunity for Sajid Khan, a late addition to the squad, to assume the role of the specialist spinner alongside Agha Salman, who has performed reasonably well with the ball. Of course, the more thrilling selection is the debut of Saim Ayub.

Australia Playing XI: David Warner, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Steve Smith, Travis Head, Mitchell Marsh, Alex Carey (wk), Pat Cummins (c), Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon, Josh Hazlewood

Pakistan Playing XI: Saim Ayub, Abdullah Shafique, Shan Masood (c), Babar Azam, Saud Shakeel, Mohammad Rizwan (wk), Agha Salman, Hasan Ali, Sajid Khan, Aamer Jamal, Mir Hamza

bit of a mystery surrounding what the pitch is likely to do .
SCG pitch breaking up depends on sun. Last few seasons records of spinners are not that good here. Perth has assisted spinners more than SCG. Either way team has to cover all the bases

not much Sun , there will be a few surprises .

team that won the toss should bat first here because in 4th inning sydney wicket will turn like a hell

I think this is the last time we will see the Pakistan team playing a test in Oz.

Improving 1st test won 1 session 2nd test 2 sessions just make it a respectable 3-0

As of now not much pak supporters are here.one weird thing with pak practice drill is that they will do the same for irrespective of the match type.Shaheen is practising with saim .

Australia's continuity in selection is remarkable.

There are only 3 changes from the XI that played at Sydney 6 years ago in the 2017/18 Ashes.

Pakistan have won the toss and will bat first

Pakistan win the toss and bad first.

First time we are batting first in the series, hoping to see a good performance by Saim!

Time to see what Saim can do!

Exciting to watch something different after the torture Imam has put everyone through.

What is Saim going to do poor guy. In my opinion he wont last long too

Even if he FAILS, please persist with Saim Ayub, I hope he can make an impact so PCB drop Imam forever, even if he fails we need to persist with this young talented batsman

I'm so relieved that I don't have to wake up at 4 AM to see a sloooow Imam innings. Look forward to seeing Saim Ayub play today. For the first time, I don't need a cup of morning brew to see off the first session.

6:30 pm here in Canada haha, question is will i stay up until 2am, to watch the complete 1st day hehehe

Abdullah Shafiq, another Ian Bell, Asad Shafiq in the making.

Apparently Starc exposed Sarfaraz for a poor technique

So what do those Sarfaraz haters have to say about Abdullah Technique now??!

On a dead flat wicket, you should be putting those away, not edging to slip

Shaan doing the same thing so awfull why u chasing the ball so wide..

Its Okay Saim, its a tough tour to debut in, please dont drop him, give him a fair chance PCB

Oh man that is such a brutal start for Saim's career.

Australian bowlers are incredible.

Commies overpraising Saim's first forward defence and he's out the next ball

As i said no idea what people are expecting from saim..obviously ppl will be on abdullahs case i mean they cant digest we are a very poor team

What a start. Match over in the first 10 minutes.

Thanks for coming Pakistan.

This is just a very difficult delivery to play. It wasn't a bad shot like Shafique

Feel sorry for the Aussie crowds.

Its men v boys

Better of setting up a test against a Sheffield shield team

Babar and Masood need to make it count and stand and deliver, will not be easy

Look at babars defence feet all over the place ..bat infront u.can tell the difference

The ball will seam around for first 1 hour.
After that it will be a belter pitch for 3 days.

Pitch becomes good to bat , just need to see off initial 10-15 overs. Chasing wide ball, phew...

Shafique's dismissals have started to remind me of Yasir Hameed whenever he used to be playing away from his body and getting caught in 2nd or 3rd slip like that.

Babar trigger movement looks good. So I recon he is in better form today

Babar is looking less settled than Masood. Never thought I'd say that

The ball will seam around as long as Pakistan is batting
Nah. After 12 overs it won't. It will become like Karachi. Good chance for Babar and co. if they survive this hour.

Babar needs to look to rotate the strike a bit. Masood hasn't faced anything in a while

21 for 2 . Looks like a flat deck , should be good for batting for 3 days as not much pace . 375 would be par I guess .

This will depend on what time you bat at. Pink ball does a lot more during certain time of the day.
