India beat West Indies by 237 runs in the 3rd Test

I get the feeling if we don't bowl well, WI may rack up a good score.

We ideally should have been 140/2 and kicked on from here.

Later on cricinfo they said "Jaz: "Why was Vijay dropped? " --- Not sure if he was dropped or hadn't recovered completely from injury"

Maybe they left him out as a precaution.

Whole world is asking that.

There are several news articles BEFORE the test saying Vijay is not gonna play.

Kohli's statement in those articles look non committal.

Its clear.

Good thing is Jadeja and BK are tight unlike Mishra/Umesh. And if conditions help they are god.

Shami/Ashwin are good anyways.

A quality keeper batsmen and I tell you what its a world class team.

No.7 is best position for Ashwin. 6 is just too high.

World class allrounder goes as we speak.. Is Kohli watching the game? :p :))

Wait, was that a no ball? India should get all out quickly.. anyway there won't be much difference..

You don't see that too often nowadays.

A back foot no-ball. Phil Simmons not looking pleased.

Yeah...I felt we gave too many runs last innings which gave away all momentum.

Still...I have no idea whats a good score here.

I'm still so ****** off at Vijay and Pujara not playing this game that I wan't India to lose this match. Injustice!!

Doesn't matter how much Ashwin scores today.

Him at number 6 in a fragile XI is a NO NO.

This is a ticking time bomb.

Him at no 6 with Vijay/Pujara and Bhuvi after him is pretty good. That is why I want Bhuvi to come good. His batting along with Ashwin's and Jaddu/Mishra's makes up the extra batsman.

I mean not one that is playing but the best India can go with.

The sad part is Kohli sacrificed himself to come in at #3 to play his favorite Rohit in the side. How many more chances do we need to understand that Rohit is not a test player?!

Ashwin at number 6 in a pressure cooker situation would be scary. He will screw up and then team management will wonder whether to persist with him there or not.

His game isn't assured enough to play at 6 yet. He can somehow survive tough spells and cash in but he is not good enough (yet) to do it at number 6 consistently.

We need a solid keeper bat and then Ashwin and co should come from 7.

Number 6 should be a specialist bat spot. Even if a WK is batting, he should be a solid bat.

The average 1st innings score in St Lucia has been 434 but I haven't seen a pitch as grassy as this.

And there's only been 4 previous Tests at this ground so hard to say what a par score is.

Hurray.. Joseph is here.. waited all evening to catch a glimpse of him..

Gabriel still bowling at good speeds, just cranked it up to 149kph.

Windies fans have been through too many false dawns but some of this U19 crop are promising. With Cummins and Joseph you have some serious pace which you need on these slow, low wickets.

The batting is still too fragile. Kraigg Brathwaite and Darren Bravo are two batsmen I like a great deal but their form has fallen off a cliff. Brathwaite has averaged 26 since the start of 2015, and curiously in that timeframe, averages better away than at home. Bravo averages 31 in the same period.

And Marlon Samuels is a disgrace in Test cricket for a senior player. He averages 25 with just 2 hundreds in 16 Tests since the start of 2014. The way he was lumbering around in the field in Australia was appalling. A far cry from his limited overs performances.

This is not good enough for three key batsmen.

From what I've seen of him, Braithwaite looks a gritty batsman who has got the will to fight it out. He has got the right mindset for test cricket and I expect one good innings from him in this series itself. Bravo is a very good player but is in poor nick right now. Maybe it's an extended poor form but he isn't the archetypical West Indies T20 player, he skipped the t20 world cup in India to concentrate on Test cricket. I expect him to turn things around. I think Johnson will be the opener while Hope will replace Marlon. Both are decent. Then comes Blackwood who may look like a slogger but he has played some quality knocks in the past (in the England series at home last time). Chase is a very organized batsman, averages 44 in FC, looked very assured to me. Dowrich has got a very good potential with the bat, I expect him to become a very good batsman and Holder is no mug either.

That is a deep batting line up.

Braithwaite
Johnson
Bravo
Hope
Blackwood
Chase
Dowrich (wk)
Holder (c)
Cummins
Joseph
Gabriel

This is a very good team, one I expect to be a very competitive one.

Gabriel - Joesph - Cummins - Holder - Chase is a very decent bowling line up. These guys are capable of picking up 20 wickets.

It will get easier to bat with time here. If West indies can bat well and put a bog score, Indian will come under pressure. The best time to bat will be 2nd and 3rd day.

Ashwin has played the highest number of deliveries for India in this innings.

How many more chances do we need to understand that Rohit is not a test player?!

That stupid rohit needs can only be fit as the team jester. Utterly rubbish player! :danish

The most fiercely favourite candidate for getting his bowling action checked in the world grabs the 'Top Scorer' badge.

Can't believe that india is struggling against these lullo windies team. Pathetic stuff :sree

India need an attacking wkt keeper bat at no.6. Saha is pretty rubbish. Padosis give us Sarfaraz.

Well played Ashwin. Whilst I respect Kohli's bravness no way Ashwin should come in at 6. Better to have him at 7 and a specialist batter at 6. India would love a seam bowling all rounder I think. And also a more consistent version of Sarfraz

Nah, Ashwin should bat at 6. He has skills to do it even though it looks lazy at times. Kohli made a brainless decision to not play Pujara and Vijay in this pitch.

100 run partnership!

Sharma, Dhawan and co should really be ashamed for their lack of application.

Its a big risk. Imagine if Ashwin ends up batting with someone like rohit and the score is 40-4 or something. It could end up 40-5 and India could be dismissed cheaply

Sharma should not play. 5 batsmen means all 5 have to be good. Vijay/Pujara should play.

I don't understand the logic here to be honest. It can happen with special batsman as well. Ashwin has a very good skill to bat and I think you will see more runs form him when he bats higher. Indians failed to win many tests due to playing only 4 bowlers. On flattish tracks you do need 5 bowlers. I like Indians playing with 5 bowlers and Ashwin batting higher up. It may backfire some time as you pointed out, but it will help them win more games.

Brilliant from Ashwin with a good support given by Saha. A 30 odd from Jadeja tomorrow and India can get to 300+ which will be a good score. It was good to see both attacking after reaching to 200 as now India is in a fine position.

Bhuvi is also there

Great stuff from Ashwin, always rated him as a quality A/R. What can you guys tell me about the fast bowler debutant Joseph?

How do you think this pitch will play out over 5 days?

What's a good score here?

And will it help spinners later on or just flatten out bad?

Too early to say anything, it depends on the weather as well. If there is overcast throughout, the pitch will deteriorate faster. But if there is sun throughout, it could become a batting paradise breaking down late on day 4. There is a tinge of green on this pitch with hardly any cracks and it's showing no signs of deterioration as can be seen by the lack of footmarks by the bowlers. So it's well put together to last 5 days. The thing with Windies pitches is they're spongy because the clay is old but well put together at the same time with hardly any cracks. There is grip available for spinners and spongy bounce during the early days that can be exploited by overspin. Someone like Jadeja can be dangerous because of the pace he bowls at.

350-400 I'd say is a competitive score.

Probably late day 4.

235 for 5. Not bad on this wicket.

Not bad for the condition we were in at one stage.

Pitch started off as hard and then eased out relatively.

If we had proper batsmen at the middle of the day, we would have ended with 275-3 or even 300-4 and gone all out tomorrow and got 400-450 in the eased out conditions.

Its good to have 5 bowlers but there is no use putting someone higher in the batting order if they aren't good enough. But tbf Ashwin is doing well so let's see how he goes against other teams.

Real quality.

Got a good outswinger. Gets bounce as well.

Cheers, big fan of fast bowling; look forward to watching him bowl tomorrow. How come Kumar is playing? thought Yadav played in the last few games I think and is Arron still around? he was pretty quick

Cos Yadav wasn't consistent and Bhuvi seems to have improved and we need someone to keep things tight.

Its all a test. Pacers in Indian team come and go anytime.

Ashwin can do well at no.6 but then he has to concentrate more on his batting but India needs his bowling more. We can't afford to lose the bowler in Ashwin and actually he has to improve even in that dept especially outside Asia. Ashwin's batting can be exploited at no.7 if India finds a good keeper batsmen and it won't affect his bowling either.

Windies looked real flat in the 3rd session. Very poor captaincy from Holder by bringing himself and Chase on with India 5 down. This is where you bring you bring your best bowlers, Alzarri and Gabriel in this case, to penetrate into the tail by attacking fields and taking chances. If nothing happens for 10 overs then you can go back to bowling dry until the new ball. The best captains are those who can alternate between attack and defence and capitalize on these crucial periods where chances to strike are at their highest.

I thought the WI appealing during the last overs of the day was annoying. One bowl took a thick outside edge to the pads, another yorker bowled by Holder seemed to be all bat and did not even touch Shah's boot. Didn't prevent loud prolonged appeals in an attempt to get the umpire to make a wrong decision.
