Sri Lanka v Pakistan | 1st ODI | Dambulla | 30/7/09 [PAK inns]

Com'n! Afridimal! (A mix of Afridi and Kamran Akmal, which also sounds like "ANIMAL.")

70 runs from first 7-11 overs!

Good luck to them, shouldnt be too hard if we dont lose wickets. Just bat out 50 overs and we will get there.

With batting conditions likely to improve as the match progresses, we just need to bat patiently and sensibly

Doubt it that Afridi will open

It will either be Fawad or Malik - which isnt ideal since they are more suited in the middle order, tho out of the 2 Malik should open

The conditions for batting usually improve as the day progress in Dambulla, and though 175 is the average score batting first in day games at this ground, I think it's still an even game at the halfway stage. Cricinfo

I really hope YK does not send Fawad to open. Would be one of the most dumbest decisions ever and would potentially destroy young Fawad's career!

He may not have any choice if Malik balks at opening the innings.

Very true - though Malik is better in the middle opener i hope he opens because no way do i want Fawad opening

It seems that the idea is to use Alam as a specialist opener - whether he is one in fact is irrelevant. The problem is that if he does not open then who will? If they picked a specialist opener then Alam would be dropped. So either he opens or he is dropped, that seems to be the thinking.

If Pakistan lose by 2 runs, Murali's "six" is going to become very controversial.

lol, dont expect to chase 230, lol, if they lose, blame the skipper, yunus. he went too immature today.

If you are fully convinced that Pak will lose then why dont you do all us a favor and stop posting here.

Good point - hate it when the mongs just post doom and gloom

NOBODY is forcing you to watch/follow the match so do the rest of us a favour and take your wrist slitting elsewhere.

Malik has opened before so I don't see why he cannot do it again this time. The mistake YK made with this line-up is, he has tried to accommodate both Fawad and Misbah. Now due to that, we have lost out on a specialist opener and now find ourselves in this situation where there is uncertainty as to who will open. Misbah should be shown the door in the next match if he does not perform. There is no point in persisting with a non-performer if there are two worthy players in the team vying for that same spot

Ive always been a big fan of Misbah but I agree that he is running out of chances. Im not sure I would classify Malik as "worthy". In fact, I wouldnt mind seeing both of them being "rested" for a while so that we can take a look at Umar Akmal (who can open the batting?).

Very happy Malik is opening instead of Fawad. Hopefully this means Fawad will be batting at number 5.

I think he's finally forced his way in.

Will you guys plz stop this nonsense about YK destroying fawad,s career give him some bleeding credit for giving him so many chances and backing him in all three formats of the game.

Could Afridi be in next, camera just showed him padded up, or do pakistan fear quite a few early wickets?

Fawad likely to bat at 8, is not even padded up.

I think Afridi at 3 is a tactic we're going to persist with. I think it's a good, aggressive option at the right time, considering Afridi's confidence of late.

rightly said...

Malik struggling a little, but this still one of our better opening partnerships.

Malik should not be opening the batsmen. He has been the stay of our batting along with Younis at the ODI level. We are sacrificing him for the sake of Misbah/Fawad.

I'd say 6, considering Afridi's likely to be next:

3) Afridi
4) Yousuf
5) Younis
6) Fawad

Yeah I agree . Will be sent after Razzaq. That would be a waste.
Some ppl are never happy. They don't want to open with fawad and when he does not they started crying that he won't get a bat.Pathetic stuff.

That was lucky - inswinging delivery and inside egde goes behind past the keeper

We need to sort our batting line up pretty quickly at the moment no one knows where there playing

No it's not pathetic stuff since neither 1 nor 8 is his normal batting position.

You forgot Misbah Ul Huq, the don bradman of pakistan, number 7...seriously?

Well then I would wait till he bats at 8 and then start this negativity. From where I can see YK is backing him fully and wants him in his team.

where else would you play him...There will be complaints if Afridi is dropped lower, and as long as Yousuf and Misbah are in the 11, They should bat higher than Fawad.

Malik is struggling as opener, Malik is our best ODI batsman, don't know why YK is changing his role, Misbah should be gone and an opener with Akmal is good enough.

MALIK JUST GOES TO THE INSWINGER!

Good delivery - Malik was well beaten

Decentish start - need to avoid losing another quick wicket

Malik was playing like he was still in test mode anyways (slow.)

Wow, this is the "future" of Pakistani batting. Can't play swing to save his life *shudders* .

With Afridi you never know, but Akmal and Afridi, if they bat 10 overs together, the match is ours

6.5
Kulasekara to Shoaib Malik, OUT, Kulasekara finally gets rid of Malik, who has looked completely out of touch here
Shoaib Malik b Kulasekara 9 (19b 1x4 0x6) SR: 47.36

Malik completely at sea there. Never a long term option as an opener, as his technique is far too shabby for such a job.

Why is Malik even a short term solution is beyond me.
