New Zealand, the top-ranked ODI team, will look to hit the ground running as they begin their preparation for the 50-over World Cup in India with a string of 50-over assignments in the sub-continent. A three-match ODI series against Pakistan will be followed by white-ball games against India, which will give New Zealand enough opportunity to tune themselves to the conditions that they will mostly get during the World Cup later this year.

Barring a loss to Australia, New Zealand haven't lost a single ODI series since January 2021, collecting as many as six series wins. But none of these victories have come in Asia, with New Zealand having last visited the continent for an ODI series way back in 2018 when they drew the 50-over series 1-1 against Pakistan in the UAE. This will be their first ODI series in Pakistan since December 2003.

The hosts, meanwhile, haven't played an ODI series for close to five months whereas New Zealand played at home against India a couple of months back. Pakistan's last series was against the Netherlands in August, with Babar Azam's team beating the hosts 3-0. They will be hoping there is no rustiness as they shift from the five-day format to 50-over cricket.

Pakistan too have a good record since January 2021, having only lost a series to England while winning the other four series they played. They will also reflect on their excellent home record since 2015, with Pakistan remaining undefeated in each of the five series they have played at home since then. Their last series at home was against the West Indies in June 2022, with the hosts winning 3-0, while they had defeated Australia 2-1 before that.

When: Monday, January 9 at 2:30 PM Local Time

Where: National Stadium, Karachi

What to expect: The last ODI games to be played in Karachi were Pakistan's matches against Sri Lanka in September-October 2019. Pakistan had defended 305 in one of the matches and chased down a target of 298. There were several 300-plus totals scored during the Pakistan Cup - the domestic List A competition - held recently, with 350 being crossed four times and the highest being 387. Batters can expect conditions favouring them in the upcoming series as well. A pleasant weather, with a high of 27 degree Celsius, is forecast.

Team news:

Pakistan: Shan Masood and Haris Sohail have earned ODI recalls while the Shahid Afridi-led selection panel also included uncapped batters Tayyab Tahir and Kamran Ghulam, and wrist spinner Usama Mir in the 16-member squad.

New Zealand: Matt Henry has been ruled out of the ODI series against Pakistan and India with an abdominal strain. Jacob Duffy could be a contender to replace him should New Zealand seek a replacement. Earlier this month, Adam Milne had also pulled out of the ODIs citing lack of preparation, and was replaced by Blair Tickner. Meanwhile, uncapped all-rounder Henry Shipley is likely to make his debut.

Squads:

New Zealand Squad: Finn Allen, Devon Conway, Kane Williamson(c), Tom Latham(w), Daryl Mitchell, Glenn Phillips, Mitchell Santner, Tim Southee, Blair Tickner, Lockie Ferguson, Ish Sodhi, Michael Bracewell, Henry Nicholls, Henry Shipley, Jacob Duffy

Pakistan Squad: Imam-ul-Haq, Fakhar Zaman, Babar Azam(c), Mohammad Rizwan(w), Shan Masood, Agha Salman, Kamran Ghulam, Mohammad Nawaz, Mohammad Wasim Jr, Haris Rauf, Shahnawaz Dahani, Tayyab Tahir, Mohammad Hasnain, Naseem Shah, Usama Mir, Haris Sohail

Leg-spinner Usama Mir is making ODI debut today

Excited for harris sohail. As he has a habbit of makig strong comeback nearly before every WC event.
Ignoring his attitude and bad fitness, he is one of the best batter in Pakistan ODI team after babar.
Should have been there with babat at no. 4

There is a huge chance of strong rift between babar and PCB management if shan is left out from playing XI. Expecting new captain in WC2023

Pakistan have won the toss and elected to bowl in the first ODI against New Zealand

Rizwan below 4 is unlikely to perform . Seems sooner he will be out of team . Hope he can perform at 5

Haris Sohail is a terrible pick. Lazy unfit player who’ll be discarded after WC as it happens always

Pakistan batting looks quite short with Rizwan batting so high up. Kamran Ghulam could had played ahead of Agha, and Hasnain giving Naseem rest for the first match.

NZ batting line up is quite deep.
Henry Shipley is a good all rounder.
Even Southee can tonk.
A bit early to say but NZ are really looking good for ODI WC. With Boult back in WC they will be a formidable unit.

I would have loved to see
Fakhar
Shaan
Babar
Haris
Kamran
Rizwan
Nawaz
Osama
Naseem
Rouf
Husnain

Mad how NZ can field 8 players with good batting ability whilst keeping 5 bowler option and Pakistan just about 6 with the same amount of bowlers.

Excellent decision to include Haris Sohail and Usama Mir. I hope Usama does well on his debut.

Yes, In fact Daryl Mitchell is a good bowling option on his day he can give 7-8 overs in ODIs. So it is 6.

Lol I am reading the NZ batting line up from the Top and it just won't end, looks so deep on paper. Amazing talent this small Nation of NZ has

Wow. Pakistani vice captain dropped.
Babar taking the new management head on.

NZ have a strong looking lineup even without Boult and Jamieson. Their new bowler is a unit.

Our team looks okay, would've liked Tahir or Ghulam to get a go but I suppose given Haris's ODI record he's ahead in pecking order.

Finn Allen is not that explosive in this format. Generally likes to take time.

Watched haris sohail this season , lethargic batting and kept throwing away starts. Still poor against short deliveries.

Lets see how he does today.

I don't know how that ball got through Devon. Good ball by Naseem.

Naseem was on the money in that first over. Good start.

Would like to have seen Tayyab or Ghulam in the team.

Why is it empty?

Are tickets too expensive or is it that people aren't interested in ODIs anymore?

Working day, guess more people will come for the Pak inns.

Yes pretty strange. More cricketers than spectators at the stadium.

Switch from red ball to white ball and suddenly our guys seem much more at ease.

And that's given !

People in Karachi are not interested at all. They will come up with thousands of excuses for the empty grounds.

Both Naseem and Rauf looking dangerous so far but it's a very very slow wicket.

Naseem superb!

Chall vi Allen

Show us some of that free flow hitting brother!

Haris is half the player he can be due to his fitness and his ignorance of it. He shouldn't be playing for Pak with that attitude towards fitness. Why can't our players learn to be professional?
After having played for 7 years, he still hasn't worked on his pull/hook. He's not someone we can carry into important tournaments.
