India took a slight lead after the first day, thanks to a brilliant century by Joe Root that kept England in the game. Akash Deep had an impressive debut, dismantling England's top order in the opening hour and putting India in a commanding position. The spin duo of Ashwin and Jadeja each took a wicket just before lunch, contributing to India's successful morning.

With England struggling at 112/5, Root and Foakes formed a crucial partnership post-lunch, playing solid, attritional cricket. This duo, determined not to lose any wickets in a session for the first time in the series, added over 100 runs. After tea, they increased the scoring, but Siraj returned with a fiery spell, utilizing reverse swing to dismiss Foakes and Hartley.

Advantage of batting first in India. Even Robinson has scored a fifty.
Last game Jadeja looked like a proper batsman

Game changing partnership between Root and Robinson.

England 331/7

This is not a Rajkot type flat wicket, 350 is a very good first innings total.

Game gone and dusted , India lost the match again bcz of Stupid rohit Captaincy delaying kuldeep allowing foakes to settle then wasting reviews, mostly England will reach 400+ and india will fold quickly
Arrogance of Dravid and team management of resting bumrah even though series on line for work load issue

I think it's flatter and slower than Rajkot.

You give up so easily? :stokes

Dravid and his lackeys along with rohit is worst thing happen to indian cricket after the 90s , really they bought indian cricket to rock bottom.

Indian cricket is at rock bottom? seriously?

Very difficult to read this pitch, nothing happens for a while and then a few balls jump up suddenly. 380 might be pretty good?

Another thing is rohit's obsession with jadeja, happened in 1st test when pope keeps sweeping he just let jadeja bowl let game drifts away , now same thing happened after lunch when jadeja bowl and they milk the bowling now today again will happened same

Jadeja is all rounder, he isn't supposed to bowl that many overs.

Tough to predict now. Will be clearer when India come out to bat.

If England can bat like this, why not the Indians?

It has been really sensible stuff from England so far this morning... there is no over-eagerness to go after bowling and just go out swinging.

I agree. The pitch has behaved oddly and looks flat the moment. But surface does look slightly abrasive and I think 375-380 will keep England in the game

India expected and planned for Bazzball and were caught down by gritty test match batting

I think Root should take most strike now and try to get some quick runs instead of exposing the tail.

England already perform better than they thought . From 112/5 to 351/9 .
Agree but these are the moments a team needs to sieze to win.
350 on the board and batting with ease in the best batting conditions of the game and out come the reverse sweep and a slog

I’m not going to criticise Robinson because he has performed way above expectations with that score. But as for Bashir he has embarrassed himself and looked like a proper rabbit in headlights. Shouldn’t be batting ahead of Jimmy even. A shocking effort.

They already got more than enough for matching winning score, india is batting 4th anything over 150 run game over

England all out now for 353 runs. Root made a huge blunder here by exposing tail enders against Jadeja.

England all out for 353 . I think this is very good 1st innings score.
Indian needs to score 450 in first innings to have any chance to win this test match

England 100 below par.

Still, India needs 100+ lead to make a match out of it.

Fantastic inning by Rooooooot!!!!!!!!!!!

:root

England still 100 below par. Wrap it up Bois! :bumrah

England would be disappointed here , 350 is not a challenging score

Amazing how views of the pitch change so much from session to session :) Most people were saying yesterday that 250 would be a good score and then 350 would be a great score. Let’s just see what happens before jumping the gun.

Yes .this is match winning 1st innings total so not sure why they are complaining. Root deserve all the credit for playing traditional test knock .

Overall good stuff from India. I thought 300 was about par so 350 is a nice bonus for England. India need 450 here. Will be quite tricky on the fifth day without that lead.

Because pitch discussion starts before tour of India starts. People are mislead by 20 balls of seam movement. Or a single grubber.

An Indian pitch's character, colour, origin, longevity and trustworthiness are questioned relentlessly by people with nefarious agendas. And they come to incorrect conclusion more often than not.

Discussion usually stops after India bats.

Sounds like the agenda is yours and yours alone.

This is a decent first innings score but real concern is how England will bat in second innings. If the pitch starts to turn they can fold easily. That's why I feel they should have made every effort to prolong first innings

Indian have been very defensive about their pitches after reports of doctoring during 'ICC' world cup

Sir Alastair Cook, speaking on TNT Sports:

"Joe Root should be proud of that knock - it was right up there with some of his best.

"Unfortunately he finishes still not out, but the 51 runs they've added this morning, England would have taken that, without a shadow of a doubt.

"Ollie Robinson played really well for his fifty as he took the initiative for England. India were a bit slow to get going."

England draws first blood., Rohit is gone

WICKET! Rohit c Foakes b Anderson 2 - India 4-1

Rohit looked very hesitant. Right through his career he's enjoyed batting on flat pitches only.

At this pace Robinson won't do much in India. Keeper should be up for him

England bowling side looks very impotent for these conditions. Their spinners are club level at best

Jazball is easily the best young batter in world. He bats with authority of a veteran

Lunch at day2 .
India 34/1 and still trailing by 319 runs
Jaiswal is looking very solid so far with unbeaten 27 .

England's session.

Gill looks to have learned to keep his bat closer to the body.

Jaiswal is immaculate as usual.
