The fifth and final Test of this long and exciting Test series between India and England will be played in the shadow of the Himalayas at the picturesque HPCA Stadium in Dharamshala. With the series already settled with the hosts taking the trophy home, the allure of this match will come from how the English will play for the honour. Despite no chance of a comeback, the Three Lions would want to win this match and end the tour on a positive note.

On the other hand, India has looked spectacular in the last three matches. After losing the first contest of the series, the Men in Blue (playing in white) bounced right back with three consecutive wins. Young stars like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sarfaraz Khan, and Dhruv Jurel impressed mightly in a series that otherwise missed Virat Kohli and KL Rahul.

India Squad: Rohit Sharma (C), Jasprit Bumrah (VC), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, Rajat Patidar, Sarfaraz Khan, Dhruv Jurel (WK), KS Bharat (WK), Devdutt Padikkal, R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohd. Siraj, Mukesh Kumar, Akash Deep.

England's Playing IX: Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Jonny Bairstow, Ben Stokes ©, Ben Foakes, Tom Hartley, Mark Wood, James Anderson, Shoaib Bashir

Now that the series is lost , hopefully Stokes becomes brave & plays a proper 5th bowling option which is not Root . Perhaps Wood , Gus , Harley , Bashir & Robinson [ if not fit , Jimmy ] .
Coolish temperatures forecast & showers on day 1 .

This test will be of the least importance now since England has already bottled the 4th game they should have won. Dead rubber'

Totally forgot this series was still ongoing.

Why the long break?

With the fifth and final Test of the closely-contested series between India and England slated to start on March 7, wicketkeeper-batter Jonny Bairstow has said that playing his 100th long-format match means "hell of a lot" England's fifth game against India at Dharamshala will mark Bairstow's 100th Test appearance after head coach Brendon McCullum confirmed his place in the playing XI. The 34-year-old has been underwhelming in the series as he has amassed just 170 runs in four Test matches. Speaking at the pre-match press conference, Bairstow talked about the pitch at Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium and said that it's a used wicket from the Ranji Trophy match.

He also praised the ground staff for doing an "amazing job".

"Playing 100 Tests means a hell of a lot. It's a used pitch from the Ranji Trophy last month... let's see. Ground staff have done an amazing job with the pitch considering the weather we have had here. They have done a great job with the outfield here in Dharamshala. Looks good. The ground is one of the most picturesque venues in the world," he said.

It would be interesting to see if India goes with 2 pacers + 3 spinners combination or 3 pacers + 2 spinners combination.

Bumrah and Jadeja are lock. Siraj and Ashwin are also lock. Ashwin is playing his 100th test so they surely not going to leave him out. Will the 5th bowler be a seamer or Kuldeep is to be seen?

Seen the weather ?
Whose bright idea was it to schedule a game there in March (when typically it is between 7-14 C)

From India perspective it is not a dead rubber as WTC points are still at stake.
I think nz will lose remaining all 4 matches against aus and ind. They have 3 matches against eng too.so most probably ind ,aus will be the confirmed finalists before ind tour of aus.

The series may be over, but Stokes' focus remains for this final stretch of the tour. During the pre match interaction with the media:

"We've been on so many India tours; you know what it's like when you get to the end of a long one - that sometimes you start thinking about the end of the game," Stokes said.

"I don't think that anyone is thinking like that because every opportunity we feel at the moment is special to play for England. Because we've lost the series, it doesn't mean that this game is different from what last week was or the week before."

"We'll think about the plane and getting home when we're in the airport. So I won't be thinking about that whatsoever until the game's done."

There was a Ranji match here 3 weeks ago. Fully played out, no interruptions. Are you from India/Dharmshala? The weather will be fine. On the cooler side in mid teens.

Rohit Sharma lauds team for 'series of comebacks': Intend to win in Dharamsala

India captain Rohit Sharma has lauded his side for a series of comebacks in the Test series against England. Speaking at the pre-match press conference in Dharamsala, Sharma lauded his team for winning Test matches from tough situations. ahead of the final game in Dharamsala.

The Indian team were pegged back with a loss in the first game of the series. England won the first Test in Hyderabad but lost their touch in the three Test matches after that.

In fact, England were in strong positions in both Rajkot and Ranchi, but a gritty Indian team led by its youngsters faltered their plans.

"For me, the way we won in the series is more satisfying. It has been a series of comebacks for us. Whenever we have been under pressure, we could absorb it and fight back," Rohit Sharma said in Dharamsala on March 6.

Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sarfaraz Khan, and Dhruv Jurel turned out to be key for India in tough circumstances, scoring important runs. On the other hand, pacer Akash Deep made an excellent debut in Ranchi as well, picking up 3 wickets in the first session of the Test match.

Sharma spoke about the pitch and said that it might swing and seam as much as it is expected from overcast conditions. Sharma felt that the pitch might play like Indian tracks where it has some help for the seamers early in the game and turns into a turner as the match progresses.

"Whether it's rank turner or any other pitch, intent is to win. Even on rank turners, advantages and disadvantages are for both teams," Sharma said on the conditions.

The player however added that there is a chance that India might play an extra spinner based on the conditions.

"There is a good chance to play extra seamer. We have not yet completely decided on it but there is a good chance," Sharma said in his press conference.

India are currently 3-1 up in the Test series. The team lost the first much in Hyderabad and then produced sensational comebacks to go 3-1, winning matches in Vizag, Rajkot, and Ranchi.

The Indian team currently leads the World Test Championship points table with 5 wins from 8 matches.

So, Foakes bats at 6? Brave!
would have been , Eng declared their 11 today with Wood replacing the benign unfit looking Robinson . Incidentally Bashir down today with stomach bug along with 2 Umpires .

Pitch it appears has sparse brown grass though the temperatures suggest unlikely to crack due to heat . Wonder if poor Kuldeep might have to sit out for Aakashdeep ! Only way it could turn last 2 days is if it is not watered at all today !

Did the softies have another holiday in the UAE in between Tests or did they stay back this time?

Anyway, hopefully another humiliation loading for Bazball and Stokes. Fingers crossed rain doesn’t save them from another pounding.

Mark Wood returns for England but Stokes keeps two spinners for fifth Test

Mark Wood has returned to the England team for the fifth Test against India in picturesque Dharamshala, replacing Ollie Robinson as the one change for the tourists after their series-sealing defeat in Ranchi last week.

As has become customary, Ben Stokes named his XI a day out from the toss and, hoping to end the series as a 3-2 defeat, did so despite illness in the camp. Both Robinson and Shoaib Bashir were absent from training on Wednesday due to upset stomachs but the latter, who took eight wickets in the fourth Test, has still kept his spot.

The recall for Wood was not unexpected, both for the beige, flat pitch that has been prepared at the HPCA Cricket Stadium and Robinson’s suboptimal one-off appearance on tour that, after no warm-up cricket, saw him struggle to reach 80mph during 13 wicketless overs. It followed another back issue, this time suffered while batting.

England’s final selection is contingent on Bashir brightening up overnight and, if not, it would force a change of strategy given there is no backup spinner. Surrey’s uncapped fast bowler Gus Atkinson is the only spare bowler in the squad, spinners Jack Leach (knee) and Rehan Ahmed (personal reasons) having already left the tour.

“I don’t think it’s anything to be too concerned about,” said Stokes. “[Bashir and Robinson] woke up with slightly upset stomachs and the day before a game you don’t want to put anybody at risk so we’ve decided to keep them away from the team. It’s the sensible thing to do.”

Regarding Wood’s return alongside Jimmy Anderson, who sits two wickets away from 700 in Test cricket, Stokes admitted he expected more grass on the pitch upon arrival in Dharamshala that would dictate three frontline seamers in his attack. As it is, on a surface he described as a “belter”, two spinners in Bashir and Tom Hartley was the decision.

“It looks like a wicket that could have a bit of pace and carry in it,” Stokes said. “Jimmy has been Jimmy on this trip – absolutely awesome – and having a fresh Mark Wood on a wicket that you feel is going to offer some pace [was a case of] wanting pace and firepower to break the game open. Two spinners allow us to play either conditions at different times.”

Stokes was supportive of Robinson in the pre-match press conference but, illness aside, the 30-year-old was unlikely to feature. And despite the England captain defending his worth ethic, the Sussex right-armer’s future deployment is not straightforward given a growing back catalogue of fitness issues that have left the team short in games.

Robinson suffered back spasms during the 2021/22 Ashes series that left the team a bowler down in both Adelaide and Hobart, with the problem then resurfacing during the warm-up period for the Caribbean tour that followed that winter and made him an onlooker for the entire series. At Headingley last summer, Robinson’s last outing before this tour, he pulled up after bowling just 11.2 overs.

The illness in the England camp is not confined to their ranks, with members of the umpiring team also affected. Joel Wilson, due to be on the field, and Kumar Dharmasena, down for third umpire duties, are both understood to have been affected.

India’s Jayaraman Madanagopal is the designated fourth umpire in this match and, under the playing conditions, would step up to officiate if either colleague is unable to feature.

England captain Ben Stokes called the Dharamsala pitch an absolute belter and that is the main reason why he did not pick an extra pacer for the fifth and final Test against India. He said in a pre-match press conference:

"Before we even got here, we were probably thinking it was going to be a three seamer one spinner attack but then when we saw the wicket and then saw it again today, I think going with two seamers and two spinners is probably the right call."

"We felt there would probably a bit more grass on the wicket just because of where we are but overall the wicket looks an absolute belter. So playing two seamers and still having Bash (Shoaib Bashir) and Tom gives us a good mixture when you're a little bit unsure of what it will do as the Test goes on."

"At 3-1, you think it's not been a success but I look at it with completely different angles to that and I think we've definitely progressed as a team even though we haven't got the results we wanted. You know, 3-2 sounds better than 3-1 or 4-1 and that's obviously what we're looking to do."

"It's not worked out that way in terms of results but we've got one last push here which is great at the end of a long tour when you play five games. It's a great ground to do it at and a lot of Barmy Army are coming in to support us this week. So, very excited."

"They both woke up with slightly upset stomachs and the day before the game you don't want to put anybody at risk so we've decided to keep them away from the team."

As per cricinfo, stupid indian management believes in patidar's talent and will give him another chance. It's all Dravid's tactics to keep kl place open.Dravid is becoming a major block for new talent.

Ben Stokes was surprised again aby another wicket in this Test Series. Wow. I didnt think it was possible any more.

Do Indians make unique pitches?

Whether Patidar scores 100 or fails, it doesn't matter; that spot is for KL.

Dharamshala rain forecast: Day one

There is an 82 per cent chance of rain during the day with winds at 19 kmph also expected to lash the city. Accuweather says the weather is going to be “Mostly cloudy and chilly” with “a little morning rain followed by a couple of thundershowers in the afternoon”.

Pitch should be fast and bouncy, i remeber Matt wade taking them around his ears even on day 3 in 2017.
My cousing went trekking in the nearby Kaangra valley in mid feb and it was absolute freezing with snowfall :) even in Dharmshala as well as nearby McLeodgung :). i expect temp to not cross mid teens.
feel Akash for Kulli is the main change and i also feel Patidar will be given a run unless they decide to play Washi Sundar in place of patidar -which i think will be a decent change. Dude can bat, terrific fielder and gives you 10-12 solid overs.
If it swings - expect grumpy Jim to be in the mix and most probably they will select Wood.
don't know the deal with Robinson maybe he will be selected as well
all in all a good riveting contest in the offing :)

If England can end series with a 2-3 result, that wouldn't be too bad.

England were competitive throughout the series even if the scorecard doesn't show it.

Damn it's pretty cold out here with forecast of rain likely.

90 percent chance there will be NOT one drop of rain. Dunno who these forecasters are lmao

Patidar is 30 years old. I thought he is a youngster. He has a batting average of 43 in FC in 58 tests.
Hanuma Vihari is also 30, but with a FC average of 52 in 124 tests.

Vihari is a has-been and Patidar is a new talent.

Breaking news: Devdutt Padikkal has been handed over a cap. So Rajat Patidar makes way for him. Ashwin hands over the cap to him. Five debutants for India in this series. Only the second time this has happened not counting their first series ever.

Toss coming up in few minutes. India or england?

TOSS UPDATE:

England have won the toss and have opted to bat first

TEAMS:

India
(Playing XI): Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rohit Sharma(c), Shubman Gill, Devdutt Padikkal, Ravindra Jadeja, Sarfaraz Khan, Dhruv Jurel(w), Ravichandran Ashwin, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Siraj, Srikar Bharat

England (Playing XI): Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Ben Stokes(c), Jonny Bairstow, Ben Foakes(w), Tom Hartley, Shoaib Bashir, Mark Wood, James Anderson

Bumrah is back, Akash Deep to miss the game. Devdutt Padikkal making his debut as well. Good changes made by rohit.

An update from BCCI: "Rajat Patidar got hit on his left ankle during practice session on 6th March, 2024. He pulled up sore on the morning of the game and was not available for selection

Ankle... reminds me of when Prithvi SHaw injured his ankle in Australia, a certain Shubman Gill replaced him and Shaw never played test cricket again. :stokes

Why rohit have to say patidar is injured.Seems management does not even wants to acknowledge that they have blundered by selecting him.

I dont bother about Who ever replaces patidar.Patidar should never play for India again.

England's Jonny Bairstow and India's Ravichandran Ashwin will make their 100th Test appearances, while James Anderson - currently on 698 Test wickets - could become the first seamer to 700 scalps in the format.

Thank god patidar not there team management say he got hit on his left ankle

Time for cap presentation for Ashwin. Rahul Dravid to hand it over. Ashwin's wife and his daughters are there.

Is it like a different special cap or just a symbolic gesture?

England batting first. Will there be some swing or seam on offer?

Australia had scored 300 in their first innings here in 2017, but lost that match and series to India.

Bazball got mauled by youngsta beauties!

:sa

Bumrah was probably tasked with "educating" Patidar.

A precision yorker did the job.
A yorker would have crushed a toe.. an ankle injury implies the dude missed a juicy half volley. :afridi bowled underarm

Why akash dropped bumrah and siraj struggled with new ball akash done well with new ball

Great back drop of the mountains. Totally green and beautiful outfield. Not sure how they managed to keep the grass this well maintained and green in cold weather. Kudos to the ground staff. Must be winter grass.

Pitch report was a ridiculous 90 second brief - good deck to bat , high altitude will make ball travel high to stands & will suit Bazball . Eng obviously choosing 2 bat & started cautiously against the masterful Bumrah . 16/0 in 6 .

England won three toss out of five so no excuse of not winning the series anymore

Bumrah and siraj can't take wickets in opening spell that's a shame and last match akash deep really done well with new ball

Good 50 minutes for England.

Siraj holds his leg after diving on probably the worst outfield in world. This venue is not fit to host international games

Almost every pitch has offered some uneven bounce. But slow nature of pitches helps the batsmen deal with it

Akash Deep should have been included in the 11 and Siraj could have been given a break

English openers are very tough to get out.
They've been just lucky, very lucky. On any other day, they could have been at least 3 down in first hour itself

Lots and lots of plays and misses so far. India will be feeling like they have missed out on getting a breakthrough on many occasions.

This pitch need three seam bowlers Anderson will be more than handful

So finally Duckett is out of his misery.
